2019 Ty Caton Tytanium Red Wine, Caton Vineyard, Moon Mountain District
Tasting Notes
This sophisticated wine opens with alluring aromas of wild black cherry, anise, and cocoa. Deep indigo tones lead to a soft, silky generous mouth feel accompanied by flavors of dark fruit and toasted oak. Layered, complex flavors remain lingering on the palate with an exceptionally long finish.
Caton Vineyard
Located in the foothills of Sonoma Valley, the Caton Vineyard is defined by its sustainable farming and belief that healthier vineyards produce very unique and distinctive wines. The vineyards have multiple sun exposures, soil types, and vary in altitude over 300 feet between each other. Tytanium represents a statement of distinction for the types of wines I like to make by expressing the distinct character and authenticity of my family’s vineyard and our unique location.
Vintage Notes
2019 was a classic Northern California vintage with a nearly ideal growing season in Sonoma Valley. The late rainfall and a gradual temperature rise into September led to longer hang times and even fruit development. This harvest offers concentrated flavors and well-balanced fruit that will steadily mature and stand the test of time.
At Ty Caton Vineyards, our commitment to excellence begins in the Caton Vineyard where winemaker Ty Caton sustainably farms the hillside fruit used in his Moon Mountain District wine. As one of the few exclusively estate producers in Sonoma Valley, Ty works with grapes from soil to glass enabling him to make extraordinary wines that showcase the vineyard.
Ty Caton wines have received critical acclaim in world-renowned wine publications and competitions, including many Best of Class honors. As a grape grower and winemaker, Ty strives to produce the “wow factor” by making wines that are bold, beautifully structured and are a true representation of the vineyards they come from.

I bought this the last time it was offered and it is EXCELLENT! Oh - I’m in Arizona too but this time it won’t let me purchase it. Come on Casemates… You’re killing me…
@jmdavidson1 OK. I’ll pick up the case. I was not looking to take 6, so if anyone in the area, including those that responded, want to get in or get more, let me know.
How much more are you saving by buying a full case?
(Note: Tax & Shipping not included in savings calculations). 2019 Ty Caton Tytanium Estate Red Blend - $100 = 16.65%
Might want to take the winery tasting note “…wine opens with alluring aromas of wild black cherry, anise, and cocoa…” with a grain of salt. Or maybe these wines are very consistent. There are 5 or 6 vintages of this for sale on producer website and they all have the exact same tasting note
@kaolis Some companies manipulate their wines so that they taste the same year after year; eg. Caymus. By the way, I’m in. Note that “our” price is not much different than some that I bought a decade ago, Thanks Ty.
@FritzCat yeah yeah I know, my consistent comment was a little tongue in cheek… and I know some producers don’t update websites. However it’s a flagship wine and it’s the same tasting note verbatim for years and years…and years
I knew when I looked at the shipping information that I was in for a treat from Alice and the folks at WCC (thanks!). I gratefully had plenty of time between receiving the bottle and the offer, so it was able to settle in my cooler for a few days before getting down to business.
Knowing the reputation of this wine (have having only last week enjoyed the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Winemaker’s Cuvée from Mr. Caton) I elected to prepare a meal that I hoped would highlight it. For the Mrs. a bacon-wrapped filet and for myself a ribeye topped with apple wood smoked blue cheese and mushrooms; alongside some sweet potato fries seasoned with salt and pepper, and a bit of greens for myself because I like the colors.
Now the important stuff. I’ll start with the headline: this wine is complex and delicious. Full stop.
Observationally, a dark garnet in the glass, quite clear and a jewel to look at. A quick swirl in the oversized glass and the high alcohol content is obvious as long legs take a leisurely stroll forced by gravity back down the surface. On initial pour, the nose is full of aromas, but seems to be patiently waiting to offer its secrets. After a few minutes of waiting and interminable waiting, I started to pick up dark berries, a bit of saddle leather, and some cocoa. Eventually I’d sense some dark cherries, but overall my senses could not distinguish between the mélange of dark fruits, but I kept dropping my nose back into the glass to enjoy the fullness for at least ten minutes before a drop ever made it to my tongue.
[Mrs. Take: “Smells good” and proceeds to drink it… “mmmm–I like it”]
When I finally mustered the will to remove my nose, I took a quick sip. Silky, round, full flavors. The dark fruits from the nose laid down a foundation reenforced by dusty oak. Again, I am at a loss for the specific fruits/berries at play here, but it’s a symphony on a sunny afternoon. The finish was surprisingly long. As I continued with dinner I kept coming back and picked up a hint of anise that the black pepper from the fries called out, and I was impressed with how dense and chewy the wine was, having such fullness that it felt like it, too, could be eaten. Paired wonderfully with the blue cheese/mushroom-topped ribeye. Perhaps most interestingly, I started to taste a hint of tangerine near the finish; I hadn’t expected this, and I asked the Mrs. and she agreed that she could sense that, having had it suggested. Probably my spoken bias on her, but still…
[Mrs. Take: “Can I have more?”]
I managed to convince the Mrs. that we’d save the second half of the bottle for future sciencing, inserting a stopper. On the second evening, the effects of the oxygen were most obvious on the nose as the intensity of the berries seemed more ripe, and the cocoa nearly completely gone. The flavor I found to be still delightful, the dustiness of before shaken off leaving wildly complex dark, juicy fruits, a touch of anise that slides into tangerine around ten seconds into an evolutionarily long finish. A much simpler meal of salad of greens, goat cheese, bacon, and tomatoes with a ham and Swiss ciabatta provided a simple and complimentary backdrop.
I restrained myself and didn’t finish the bottle this second evening so that I could continue the science and have a bit this morning as I write this up… two ounces into the glass for you, lovely people. The bottle was opened around 40 hours ago, and that it is not empty is a small miracle. This morning the brightness of the fruit on the nose is gone, but the intensity is still there. The bottom end of the fruits on the palate is diminished slightly and all of the flavors are even more integrated such that I cannot pick out a single fruit among them; fruit and oak, and apparently the cleaning crew didn’t visit as the dust is back (or maybe I just didn’t taste closely last night).
Well, that’s it. I think the half glass left will have to wait for the post-work time, which being a sunny Friday in Ohio with a high expected in the upper 60s might be earlier than I am currently willing to admit. Thanks for attending my TyTalk. Cheers!
For the visually stimulated I present photos.
I’ve got a bunch of TyCaton downstairs, and TyTanium is certainly good stuff, but don’t know that I need a half-kilobuck of fermented grapes; Anyone in the DC/MD/VA area want to split it or pick up a few bottles?
@caffeineguy Let me know when/where would be convenient to meet. I go to Greenbelt and New Carrollton metros occasionally but I could meet (ideally) somewhere north of the DC beltway.
@caffeineguy yeah we got one too
I’ve seen that Robo invite once before,
last year maybe
seems like when 3 or more are gathered in WD’s name …to split certain offers? IDK
@caffeineguy@kls_in_MD OK, I’ll let you know when they arrive and we can coordinate getting together. There’s a decent chance I’ll be out of town when it arrives but it’s shipping to my office so it’ll be fine there until I get back.
Last Tytanium I bought was 2009 and tasted best around 9-11 years. Maybe longer but I ran out after 11 years. Did not like it very much first few years, it needed some time.
Rattage on the 2019 vintage Ty Caton Tytanium
I enjoyed this bottle over a couple of nights last weekend.
Bottle was received Friday and opened Saturday, label states 15.4% alcohol, blend percentages match the description provided.
Wine pours a clear reddish purple, nearly opaque in the glass which is typical of the blend presented.
The nose is very young and jumps out of the glass, filled the kitchen with red fruit notes predominately. Sticking my nose in the glass the alcohol is very present but the oak is minimized. Primary notes are bright cherry and raspberry, and wet stone.
On the palate the wine is dry, medium/full bodied, has moderate acidity, mellow rounded tannins. Overall the wine is well balanced, I did not notice the alcohol or oak while sipping. Overall a great flavor profile, but the nose is more expressive than the flavor profile.
I think it is both a good food wine and holds up great on its own, it really has no jagged edges and I’m not sure about its age-ability, the higher alcohol content would make me lean towards classifying this as a purely new world style wine but while sipping it none of the over done, overly jammy qualities really came through. I think its ready to drink now, maybe ageing another 2-3 years helps the fruit smooth a bit but that all depends on if thats what you want.
Overall, I really enjoyed it and would happily drink it again if served.
Cheers to Friday and all you other Casemateers!
And happy Cinco De Mayo.
So, the last time I had Tytanium was the 2003!!! vintage, which I managed to purchase for about $18 per bottle (mix pack from the previous site). I still remember drinking it and It was probably 2008 when I last had it. Inflation is a B****. Would love to split with some people in the Kansas City area.
@caffeineguy I guess. They did give an estimated delivery date of 5/30, so I don’t think you can say it’s behind schedule. Though it doesn’t usually take as long as the estimate, in my experience.
I can certainly wait more, it just seemed like a long time, I don’t remember shipments taking this long, but maybe I’m just extra concerned because of the price and fellow casematers waiting on it. Don’t remember the Ty chasing the truck event, but I bet it was a good one!

@caffeineguy I’m in Burke and would take a few bottles-do you get the free shipping? I do.
@caffeineguy I’m in Glen Burnie and would split the case or take a few bottles
Ok, I’ll pick up a case. I get free shipping. I’m all over the beltway, from Damascus/Frederick down to southern Maryland
@caffeineguy Ellicott City and could do 2 off the case if you pull the trigger. If you get the case fully subscribed without me, that’s fine too.
@caffeineguy Let me know when/where would be convenient to meet. I go to Greenbelt and New Carrollton metros occasionally but I could meet (ideally) somewhere north of the DC beltway.
@evmc @kis_in_MD you’re both a little too far east of me, and It seems that @dianefreda and I are gonna split a case of 12.
Bizarre, Why did i get a robo-email saying I was in San Francisco offering to split a case with DC/MD/VA folks? I’m most certainly NOT in the CA area.
@caffeineguy @kls_in_MD I just ordered a case. Let me know if you want 2 bottles and we can meet up when it arrives.
@caffeineguy @evmc @kls_in_MD @dianefreda I’ll take any extras someone needs to unload… or I’ll end up getting two orders of 2 in order to not miss out.

I love me some Ty wine and this is his Cadillac juice! Anyone in the Nashville area willing to split in half or thirds?
If somebody in SoCal is looking to get rid of a couple of these I can help.

@caffeineguy @InFrom
Remember last time when Ty had to chase the truck all over CA to find where it had ended up orphaned?
@caffeineguy @InFrom @rjquillin extra crazy when you realise his winery is basically around the corner from WD HQ.
