Seventh Son of a Butcher’s Son

TASTING NOTES: Deep black cherry. Bright, complex, generous and profound on the nose with notes of baked blackberry pie, dry sage, white pepper, licorice, medium roast coffee, forest floor and subtle French oak. On the tongue, a supple attack with a delicate roundness, full-bodied and offering sweet spices. Pure dark berries, silky tannins and a fresh long finish. (AbV 14.7%)

VARIETALS: 30% Tannat, 30% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Malbec, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Syrah.

BARRELS: 18 months in French oak, 20% new.

PAIRS WITH: Hot dogs, baby-back ribs and hamburgers on the BBQ.

THAT REMINDS ME OF: The concept of the seventh son of a seventh son.

You may or may not have heard of it before. According to legend, the seventh son of a seventh son gets some sort of special powers. To achieve this, there must be an entirely unbroken line of male children, essentially 14 in a row. Pretty rare occurrence. Given that, it was difficult to prove or disprove for a long time, although it sounds silly enough these days. Usually the special power had to do with healing others. Because of this, they often were pushed to become doctors. Or they were a werewolf. Or a vampire. Depends on where you ask.

Why seven specifically? Because everybody loves the number seven! Look at how many sevens there are: Seven virtues. Seven deadly sins. Seven seals. Seven churches. Seven pillars. Seven heavens. Seven seas. Seven days of creation.
