Son of a Butcher shows the softer side of Yannick’s favorite red grape, Tannat, and its amazing potential as a blending varietal.
Color: Deep black cherry. Nose: Bright, complex, generous and profound with notes of baked blackberry pie, dry sage, white pepper, licorice, medium roast coffee, forest floor and subtle French oak.
Mouth: Supple attack, delicate roundness, full-bodied, offering sweet spices, pure dark berries, silky tannins, and fresh long finish.
Best accompanied with all-American hot dogs, baby-back ribs, and big, juicy hamburgers on the BBQ.
Y. Rousseau Wines is a dream that began long ago in the South-West of France and continues to grow and evolve today. Yannick Rousseau, French native, founder, and winemaker, followed his heart and passion for winemaking all the way to Napa Valley where he met his Texan-born wife, Susan. The two of them bring their combined entrepreneurial savvy to embrace the ebbs and flows of running a family winery with the legacy of their racines, hospitable style, and discriminating artisanship.
Yannick’s reputation has been made not by following in anyone’s particular footsteps but rather by taking what he has learned from great mavericks and integrating it into what he discovers to be true. His history of working with grape varietals from the Southwest of France is well known. Now, he carries forward his winemaking mission still embracing Colombard, Tannat, and other favored varietals and blending them to create revived, and even edge-bending wines.

3rd time up here, both previous offers in 2022 (Mar/Aug)
Current prices are same as initial March 2022 offer, but higher than August ($84.99 / $144.99)
As noted in previous Labrats (March 2022 offer), the wine did not need any time to open up, and had a nice fruit-forward aroma on opening. Very smooth on PnP; not too acidic and the alcohol doesn’t have a harsh presence. Mild tannins on taste. This is an extremely well balanced wine.
Tasted on initial PnP, then with a NY Strip & Baked Potato. Delicious on both instances. If I needed a red daily drinker, this would be it!
Thank you for the “on spot” description of the wine. SOB was created in 2014 and my goal was to create a daily drinker red wine, approachable but with character.

2020 Y. Rousseau Son of a Butcher Red Blend - $27 = 15.00%
I opened the bottle right after work. As I was late on the posting, I started drinking right after it opened. I was very pleasantly surprised at how nice it was straight out of the bottle. I’ll post later if its changed but I am very happy with the taste right off the bat. So if you need a wine that you can just open, definitely would recommend this.
This had very well balanced earthy flavors to me. It is much more earthy than fruity to my palate. It is very balanced and incredibly smooth. I’m also not getting any residual heat. I tend to drink a lot of Zinfandels so this could just be that I am used to that profile. I think you could drink quite a lot given the smoothness. I’m a little concerned about how quickly I may go through this (trying to save it for some friends who are coming over so I can get their thoughts).
I looked up the blend and I don’t think I’ve ever had a wine that was predominantly made with Tannat before. I always check or ask about the grapes in a wine so it is pretty exciting to be able to try a new grape.
I’ll post an update later if the bottle lasts a few hours to update everyone on any changes.

A bit of price inflation as well.
Could all be shipping as it’s only $8 on a case.
@ilCesare @rjquillin The “typical” price from Y. Rouseau was a dollar less in August - and wouldn’t summer shipping cost more?

I’d be pulling the trigger, but I already have a (partial) case in the cellar.

2nd night Labrat Report:
More tannins on the palate (so wanted to use “pallet” or “palette”!! ) tonight, but they should go away in an hour (or 2 or 3!).
Still very enjoyable!
@MarkDaSpark ha! You just wanted to mess with me and @ddeuddeg
@ddeuddeg @klezman
Duh!
@ddeuddeg @MarkDaSpark wow
Problem is that I know too many people who actually write that way.
@MarkDaSpark You missed the opportunity. Should have used both in your original post …
