About The Winery
What do Robert Mondavi, Kendall-Jackson, Lafite-Rothschild, and Miguel Torres have in common? They have all been called to extend their global wine brands to Chile. Chile may be a small country, but it punches above its weight in terms of quality and volume of wine produced. Chile is the seventh largest producer in the world, just behind Argentina and ahead of Australia.
Maule Valley in Central Chile is a cooler region with volcanic soils where Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenere thrive. Carmenere is the most distinctive Chilean grape and it reaches its greatest expression in Chile. Lovers of Bordeaux and blended wines that offer herbal nuance, tannic grip, and dried fruits will love Carmenere.
Altue is a second label from a 90+ rated winery that was imported as a private label. After tasting through the lineup and being impressed by the quality and value of the wines, we made them an offer for the whole. This is how these wines are available today more than 50% off of the original SRP.

Tonight’s Rat: 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon by Altue, Chile.
We are truly living in a golden age for wines in general. I am sitting here contemplating the finer points of a great little wine from lesser known corner of the world in Chile and thinking to myself, not only is the wine well made, it is one hell of a steal. Mere decades ago, such a moment would have been highly unlikely.
Pleasant nose with plum, cherry, oak, earth, and at least one other floral note that combines to create a subtle butterscotch twist (for lack of a better descriptor). Once opened I detect a hint of minerality. This all carries forward into a mild mannered body with oak and vanilla more pronounced and fruit diminished. Minerality carries forward to the body as well. The body is light and understated for a Cabernet Sauvignon. None too acidic. It reads like a big California Pinot Noir. After about an hour the body develops a noticeable buttery caramel character. The finish is graceful and quickly fades away with a suggestion of tannin. Once opened, the cherry is more pronounced in the finish.
Overall this is a smooth wine. I love noticing the terroir in a wine. This tells me that little has been done to the wine in the way of altering its expression. It is an honest wine. Approachable. It is not overly complex. At 13% ABV it is also not a laborious, exhausting affair either. You can open a bottle and slowly follow it through your evening without suffering from palate fatigue. This is a fantastic EDC wine (EDC = Every Day Consumption). For the price CaseMates Wine is offering it presents great value for the price. This is a great way to stock up your cellar. I still have some left from my last case. I stopped opening them when I realized how good it was. I’m in for a case!
@winesnob@karenhynes
Thanks, saw that after posting.
Was just wondering if it was one of the normal channels WD has access to and we’ve seen offers from before.
Most of the Tasting Notes for the 14 Cab seem to have been copied verbatim from the notes for the Carmenere, starting with “Deep ruby red color”, and continuing through the Specifications.
Huh. Carménère was originally thought to be Merlot? I’m thinking back… I think all the Carménère I’ve had has been from Chile, and I don’t believe I’d have ever mistaken a single bottle for Merlot. I did mistake it once for Cabernet Sauvignon, when tasting blind. Maybe my palate’s just busted?
@worbx Maybe because Carménère was a Bordeaux grape that was all brought over together from France? Ampelographers have made a ton of notorious mistakes. The most recent and high profile one was mistaking Graciano for Mourvedre.
@kaolis@klezman Thanks, both of you… I remember reading of a couple other cases like this, where an imported vine turned out to be a different variety than what it was originally thought. My initial reaction was based on my thinking how could you confuse the flavors…? But if, at the time, both grapes were predominately blended, you wouldn’t necessarily be tasting either one in isolation very often. And I suppose we’re all pretty likely to assume something is what it says on the label.
How much more are you saving by buying a full case?

@rjquillin short story long. I’m out of town. My wife missed the Fedex delivery yesterday but went to the fedex center and picked up the wine this morning. She’s going to taste it when she gets home and I’ll transcribe the notes. I’ll taste as well when I get back in town tonight! Sorry to all for the delay!
@jnurthen You’re right. That’s really strange. I just tried to see what happened (was thinking of ordering a case but wasn’t sure yet.) I get the same thing, says “Sold out” on 12 but you can buy 6. OR buy 12 with special packaging. That doesn’t make sense. Are they out of cardboard boxes? Probably a site mistake, maybe will cleaned up when “normal” people wake up later today. (I am up at 3AM on West coast…)
@Thumperchick
Checkout has now changed, and appears rational.
Six packs remain available, either shipping.
Cases, with either standard or expedited shipping, are now both showing sold out. Earlier it appeared a case could be purchased, but not with standard shipping.
@dgbickle yes… It is how they have entered their inventory. So many cases, so many 6packs. Write to them, get their attention maybe they can switch a few over.
Let’s give a big cheer to @Thumperchick for getting this checkout glitch sorted out. There’s a lot of behind the scenes work that happens we never see.
If only we had her shipping address, she would be drinking well…
@hey_zeus Yeah at first (a while back) I didn’t know that an Edit re-loaded a different image. So I tried to make an edit to my post and the giphy changed. Then I learned that if I want to keep it, I have to “Reply” and not Edit. Just wondering who that guy is and what he’s yelling about. Based on some quick searches (and giphy name) I’m guessing it is The Mummy (1999). https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120616/?ref_=ttls_li_tt
Sorry for the delay on this. I’m out of town (actually on the plane home now) and my wife missed the Fedex delivery yesterday. However, Superwife that she is, she drove to the Fedex center this morning, grabbed the bottle and did a quick tasting for us. When I get home tonight I’ll taste and post my notes as well.
This is the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon
PnP. Nose: Strawberry and plum with subtle pine notes. delicate, not intense. Probably needs some time to open up.
Taste: Nice intro. Quite light for a cab. Nicely balanced. Short finish. On the second taste she got some licorice or anise.
Summary: This wine is light for a cabernet, with a table wine appeal. It seems like it would be universally enjoyed a great for a party. Definitely a good well made wine, but not excellent or astounding. It lacks some depth, but has no flaws and is easy to drink. It’s fruity and damp but not sweet. A very good deal at this price.
Edit: I greatly appreciate the opportunity to taste this! Hopefully next time the wine could arrive a few days before the sale so we have some wiggle room!
@jhkey well, the wine sold out so I guess my notes are superfluous… perhaps I’ll ramble a bit. I found the wine to be more or less typical of entry-level South American Cabernet with a vegetal or slightly chemical nose (perhaps as winesnob indicated this is the terroir?) nice full flavor, and a short finish. If you don’t mind the unique nose it’s a very good deal at this price. The palate and flavor are much more appealing to me than the nose, but I do find the wine uniquely interesting in spite of myself (maybe it’s just the 6 hour delay we had sitting on 2 different tarmacs. So much for formal notes, I’m going to pour another glass.
I was fortunate to receive a bottle of the Carmenere to rat. Apologies for the lateness.
On initial opening, not much color on the cork. Hard to peg the nose. Subdued, maybe?
I have pictures if I can figure out how to attach them.
Alcohol is not predominant, not much to speak of tanninwise. A little fruit, a little smoke, a little spice. Well balanced, but not particularly complex.
Left it open on the counter for a few hours, and it maybe came together a bit better, but all in all not much change.
Really not much here I would consider particularly interesting, but it is a very easy drinker and I’d have no problem buying it at this price point and feeling like I got good value, but probably not much above what I’d expect from a bottle at this price from any local retailer, so I’ll pass on this one. T
I see @The_Grenachista (the vintner or rep?) commented over in the Sell Out thread.
If so, pity there wasn’t some interaction here with those that showed interest and purchased.
Still, congrats on the sellout. @winedavid49
Never received a email that it had shipped, so when the FedEx truck drove down the road today, I was wondering, now what did the wife buy from amazon, (3rd or 4th delivery this week) and lo and behold from the garden I see the driver carrying a big box, sitting it on the front step, and coming out to garden for a Adult signature…woohoo… an hour later after finishing watering I carry box in and the bottles are cool to the touch, guessing mid to upper 70’s.
Got my case (surprise!) on Friday also. So far, had some the 2014 cabernet and very pleased with it. Now two days later I get the shipping confirmation. In any case it all worked out and glad I got in on the deal.
