Any Advice on a Dehumidifier
1The Humidity in my wine cellar sits at around 86%. I am pretty worried that its going to start rotting long before the wines in there reach maturity. Has anyone use a Dehumidifier? Do you have any recommendations?
From what I have looked up, it looks like I will probably need to get one that requires you to empty a water basin when it gets full, since I dont have a drain in my cellar. How often does such a basin need to be drained? Also, how big of a unit do I need?
My cellar is about 8 feet x 20 feet, give or take.
Thanks in advanced!

Those things show up regularly on woot, and most can heat/cool as well.
I live on th coast and we have one running 24/7. Dumping out the water depends on how humid the day is and the room you have it in. Make sure to purchase a warranty. If you run them 24/7, they tend not to have a long life. We found Frigidaire 70 pint to be the best/longest lasting one.
@danandlisa Cool, that is the one I was looking into. I guess the only way to really know is to try it out myself. Thanks for the input!
Note that a dehumdifier puts out heat; it will raise the temperature of you cellar by 3-5 degrees
@rpm ah, I had not thought of that. So I will need one that will cool as well, or get something to cool my cellar. That’s a Bummer.
@Twich22 if you want cooling, you options are air conditioning which requires outside venting or an evaporation cooler, which increases humidity. No free lunch time…
@rpm Interesting. My cellar is closed so I cannot really vent. Getting a dehumidifier + an evaporation cooler seems like an oxymoron. I think I am going to try just a dehumidifier and see how it effects the room temperature.
@Twich22 You could also try a passive method like damp rid pouches depending on how much additional moisture you have.
@trifecta I have some buckets in there now. They work alright, but they really dont do enough. Its been a hot summer here in seattle, as you know, and I am on the water. I think its time to upgrade. If it doesn’t work out, ill just return it.

You don’t have to have the dehumidifier that close to the wine for it to effectively control cellar humidity. I keep mine in an adjacent room but I do leave the door open between them.
