@kawichris650 I recall an episode of A Prairie Home Companion where Garrison Keillor (and a guest, Jean Redpath) sang a song about Tuna Noodle Casserole.
As @kawichris650 said, casserole is the cooking utensil. Hotdish is the food you’ve cooked in it.
We had a “cornbread casserole” last night, which turns out to have been a tamale pie, now that we’re living in NM instead of MN. Went well with the Frog’s Tooth Rosé B from last October.
Where I come from (Minnesota) it’s known as hot dish, and yes people love 'em.
