The Avivo Sangiovese opens with notes of ripe, red apple, rhubarb jam, clove, and nutmeg. The palate is bright with flavors reminiscent of cooked pecans, fruit compote, and charcuterie for depth and balance. The finish is refreshing but tempered with a velvet mouthfeel that begs for another sip.
Vineyards
Sourced from our partners the Ledbetter Family Vineyards in Lodi, California. The Sangiovese is planted up on the bench in rocky, well-drained soils. The vineyard is farmed to Demeter-certified standards of Biodynamics.
Vintage
The 2019 vintage will be remembered as one of the best of the decade. A wet winter followed by a wet spring started the year off a little late, but we needed that water! Northern California did not suffer the usual mid-July/August heat waves, frankly, the summer was extremely mild compared to most. As the fruit slowly ripened and rain remained absent, we realized the crop was short and the growing season nearly perfect. A great vintage for winemakers and consumers alike!
Fermentation
90% of the grapes were de-stemmed only and transferred by gravity to open-top fermenters, the other 10% was left whole-cluster and added to the bottom of the tank. A long, cool 5-day cold soak was allowed before the tank was taken off cooling. The must was then fermented with indigenous yeast to promote complexity and terroir. The fermented wine was pressed off slightly before dryness to minimize harsh phenols and retain its core of fruit. Malolactic was completed with indigenous flora.

The art of making great wine starts with the thoughtful process of choosing what grape varieties to grow. Which is why we started by challenging conventional wisdom about what kinds of grapes really belong in California.
To our surprise — and ultimately our delight — we concluded that California’s climate is not at all like that of the regions of northern France, where the five varieties that constitute over 93% of the winegrapes grown in California originate. That struck us as a problem.
On the other hand, it is exactly like that of the Mediterranean, specifically Italy and Spain. So that’s what we chose to grow — and it’s made a huge difference.

I gotta say I’m tempted to buy the mini bottles of (mostly) sparkling wine over at Meh. We NEVER finish an entire bottle of champagne, so we rarely drink it. Single serve bottles of champagne might be nice! Too bad there aren’t rats over on Meh!

2019 Avivo Sangiovese - $30 = 20.00%
@winer, well, I do have a weight problem, and I consider myself having a good memory, but someone posted a link to an old offering, and while reading the comments from back then, I saw, your request from ‘22, enjoy your summer drinking this wine on the patio/deck!
Wine Enthusiast had a sip shortly after the previous two offers:
90 points. This charming, medium-bodied wine was made from biodynamically farmed grapes. Fresh-ground black pepper and black-olive aromas lead to tasty dark plums and red cherries on a smooth and supple texture. It is easy to drink and enjoy. — Jim Gordon 11/1/22
A little more recently, 9/27/23, reverse wine snob offered this. ($57.95 4-pack)
Balanced and elegant, 91-93 point, single vineyard, BULK BUY rated Sangiovese from DaVero Winery. The Avivo Sangiovese is back!..we love a good Sangiovese. Today we have exactly that coming from the River’s Edge Vineyard located in the Mokelumne River AVA between Lodi and the Sierra Foothills.
Just 930 cases were produced of this excellent wine that we first offered with the 2018 vintage. We’re delighted to bring this one back, especially since we need to restock ourselves and our price is substantially lower this time!
Aged 9 months in neutral French oak, the grapes are farmed biodynamically and the wine is made with the least amount of intervention possible - native yeasts and no additions except a micro-dose of sulphur (<30pppm) at bottling. It is also one of just a handful of American wines that are certified to be free of glyphosate (RoundUp®) residue. With a score of 90 points from Wine Enthusiast (and 91-93 points from us), this 100% Sangiovese has an extremely reasonable SRP of $20. So reasonable, in fact, that when this wine isn’t sold directly from the winery, it’s almost always listed at higher than the SRP, sometimes even 50% more! The 2019 Avivo Sangiovese from DaVero Farms & Winery begins with a very pleasing aroma of red cherry and mixed berry aromas along with licorice, a little spice, some dried herbs and a touch of black olive. Tasting reveals this to be a balanced, elegant, juicy, soft, lighter-bodied and definitively delicious example of Sangiovese. Super smooth, round and lush in the mouth, the wine features touches of black olive, earth, tobacco and spice along with more mixed berry and plum fruit. It’s also fantastic with food. It ends dry, clean and quite long. While it needs several hours to open up and be at its best, it’s drinking wonderfully right now and should continue to do so over the next 3-5 years. This is excellent once again.
Ordered this same offering 2x here on CM. Once in 2022 and again in 2023. Very easy weekday drinker. No flaws of any kind. Ordered a case moments ago. Nice for a variety
I got a case of the ‘23 offer. Delicious easy drinking wine. For the price, hard to beat. Seriously considering another case but still have 6 left hmmmm
Curious what happened to the rats on this? Fortunately I had purchased prior so knew what this was and bought a case - but have to say, at least 90% of the time, I am dependent on the rat reviews on whether or not I buy. Just trying to express my appreciation and importance
Congrats on the sell-out though. We don’t see those as often anymore so it’s nice to see some of the energy (and deals) are still flowing. Still had some from past offer and was thinking of ordering more but now I won’t have to worry about that.
Have seen this come up a few times & didn’t buy. Love sangiovese & with the seemingly good qpr decided to pull the trigger when cases came back…here’s to not being disappointed

A little winery blurb here

@kaolis
TBH, I don’t take much stock in the RWS reviews since RWS is just another WD49 website. Those reviews are more like expanded shelf talkers.
@chipgreen just the messenger sir…ha!
@kaolis appreciate your notes/research with pretty much every offering
@chipgreen @kaolis not true. Jon at RWS tastes everything we send him and is quite particular.
@kaolis @Winedavid49
I guess that makes him the Wilfred Wong of RWS.
@chipgreen @kaolis @Winedavid49 what does Jon look for in an offering?
fyi, fun offer over on meh.com we had a hand in.
Ordered this same offering 2x here on CM. Once in 2022 and again in 2023. Very easy weekday drinker. No flaws of any kind. Ordered a case moments ago. Nice for a variety

Second time purchasing a case. Great daily drinker, I enjoyed drinking it chilled a couple summers ago.

@Leatherchair this exact wine has been sold in the past with rattage
@CruelMelody Yes it was
Boo, just saw the email! I finished my last bottle a few months ago was wondering if we’d see it again
