No idea who’s participating, but we’ll probably go in on some Pinot, some bubbly, and something new. We’ll see! I hear Cabot is back this year, so might have to re-up there…
With the Sandlands release today, though, that’s going to be a lot of wine this week!
@klezman wineries know how to make wine, not manage their websites. Offers are already up for Baer and Cabot as well. Lots of library offers there. Google is your friend
Oh, and Scherrer has a few other library gems as well… Calypso Syrah 3 pack also out there.
@hscottk hasn’t you had Baer before? I’m thinking of the 3 pack of the 2014 but it’s hard to tell the style and the two tasters seemed to have slightly conflicting notes.
Orr sent out an email about BD but didn’t specify about offers. I’ve enjoyed Ocelli and Suzor in the past so likely in in but also looking to try new wineries
@kitkat34wineberserkers.com. They also have food on this day. It starts at 7:30 in the morning. If you see something you like, don’t hesitate or it will be gone. I believe you can look at last year thread and see what is typically offered.
@kitkat34 pretty much This event happens once a year in late January. Wineries and other wine related businesses put up offers throughout the day. It’s a great way to try something new from small producers you may otherwise never know about. Google Berserker Day 2023 and it’ll take you to the site. You’ll be hooked
@ctmariner I’ve liked the Franny Becks I bought quite a bit. Last year I shared a case of a 4-year vertical of their second-label Pinot, Our Wines. I’ve only tried one of them so far (the oldest, 2017) it was great.
@ctmariner I’ve bought from Silas Wines twice, and enjoyed every wine I’ve bought from them, pinot or otherwise. I’m hoping they’ll be participating again this year.
@losthighwayz they are all interesting and different. The pricing is rather sharp on his list this year. Worst that happens is you don’t like a bottle you paid less than $20 to acquire.
@klezman@losthighwayz Agree. Fairly priced enjoyable wines with uncommon varietals. I’ve bought a couple mixed parcels directly after the first BD purchase. Something a little different, a worthwhile purchase.
Damn the offers are so good this year! I’ve kept it to stocking up on things I know this time, except tomorrow I’ll get that Napa cab franc 3 pack.
It’s only preview day but I’m already done! Except maybe some Flannery lamb…
@losthighwayz
I like trying everything so offer 1 is my namesake since it’s a mix of the spectrum. I haven’t had anything I didn’t enjoy, but I also described to him exactly what I like and don’t like so he made recommendations. I’ve liked everything since that first day as he still guides me based on my preferences. What type of whites or reds do you enjoy?
You could also send him an email and let him know your preferences. He will make a recommendation based on your taste. Marcus and Megan are awesome. I ended up with the Scott, Al, and maybe a few others in his stash he thinks I will enjoy.
So many great deals on the cutting room floor this year! Suzor, Franny Beck, Kelly Fox, Briceland, Shiba Wichern, and a couple more.
Got some Cabot, Virage, red newt, Goodfellow, and Tercero since the rose deal was to good to pass up.
@hscottk yes! This is my third year purchasing during BD. A steal at this price imo
Made in the leaner style with zippy acidity
Very well made imo
Stylistically similar to Campesino rose if you’ve had it
@chefjess thanks for sharing
Would you say they’re a good QPR at BD discount for a case? Also, I’m very s sensitive to oak
Was it perceptible in any of the reds? Thank you
@losthighwayz
I think so. I didn’t detect any oak but may not have the same sensitivity. I can say I was hesitant after the first night but that Grenache was still beautiful on day 3. The Albariño was full of citrus and great minerality.
So far I’ve only purchased 2 cases of Campesino (sorry to see them go). Trying to decide if it’s the year to give Bougetz a shot. The Spring Mountain and Rutherford 3 packs are tempting.
@hscottk I ended up with 3 cases of wine for under $500, adding the Our wines PN vertical to the Isa and Grenache. Missed out on the Kelley Fox Maresh and Saunter but I have plenty of each. Oh, and lots of cheese from Jasper!
@ScottW58
I find BD overwhelming. By the time I get home from work I’m too wiped out to concentrate. I bought meat. And chips (both yesterday). No wine yet.
@karenhynes@ScottW58 It helps if you pay for access to the preview day. You get to make some early buys (there were a lot of good places with offers yesterday), and plan what to buy on Friday.
Final toll, which played to +1’s preference, CS):
Stellareese, 2016 & 2017 CS
Calluna, 2017 & 2018 CS Estate
Hersly, 2014 CS Coombsville
Campesino, 2016 Grenache (already have enough Isa)
Valeeta, Sardines and Bomba rice
Missed out on Saunter.

Flannery and Morgan Ranch
It’s a good thing I promised myself I would only buy food!
I’ve been disappointed in the selections for Morgan Ranch unfortunately. All the discount packs had stuff I wasn’t interested in. But that just meant more freezer space for Flannery lamb, I suppose.
@karenhynes@klezman@rjquillin It depends on what you call a reasonable order and what you like. They are totally different in taste. I like both, but have been buying more MR because Flannery on the grill/smoker we have brings out the gaminess which I can’t eat. I love Flannery’s hangers on the gas stove. There is a local cattle company I buy alot from as well. It is not aged, but beautiful meat.
@danandlisa@klezman@rjquillin
I is suppose I don’t cook/eat enough red meat to count myself a “connoisseur”. I’m not particularly a fan of gamey-ness. I do LOVE a good steak on occasion, so MR has worked out well for me. Maybe someday I’ll venture onto Flannery-land, but not really sure wher I’d start. I should invest some time into looking into their options. Y’all do seem to like them.
@danandlisa@karenhynes@rjquillin for the avoidance of doubt, I really enjoyed the MR I’ve had. It’s just the way she set up the offers that didn’t really appeal this year. And I couldn’t possibly store the big box.
@danandlisa@karenhynes@klezman@rjquillin I’m with you, Karen. I drool over pics here of everybody’s beef meals but I can’t remember the last time I actually cooked any beef or pork. I’ve been wanting to try Flannery though, these people around here are a bad influence. The pork caps last BD sounded mighty appealing. The main thing that stopped me though, even more than the shipping cost, was the tiny fridge we had in our last place. Couldn’t get anything in there. The one here has room enough to squeeze in a steak, so I ordered one of the 30-day ribeyes to see how we like it. That plus a rack of lamb, we’ll serve that on Saturday and won’t have to worry about freezer space.
@danandlisa@InFrom@klezman@rjquillin
I got the MR small box (I think). I definitely don’t have the freezer space for much more than that…and I still have some of last year’s offer to polish off. I love beef and pork…I just don’t cook them that often anymore.
@danandlisa@InFrom@karenhynes@klezman@rjquillin@Scottw58
I enjoy both Flannery and MR. Have a separate full size freezer so storage isn’t usually an issue. Flannery’s burger blends are fantastic so when there’s a deal, we stock up. They also have non-beef items so the pork and lamb options are nice. MR has options for not just steaks but kabobs, brisket, tenderloin tips, etc. Agree with Karen that the cost of shipping Flannery to the Midwest is sometimes prohibitive since its second day/overnight air, which limits the orders to BD and a few deals throughout the year. I did place a Flannery order this time but no MR. The box options for medium/small weren’t what I wanted (I also missed the brisket/ribs) and I’m set with steaks. I’m waiting for Alaska Gold to join BD. That would definitely hurt the wallet.
@chefjess@danandlisa@InFrom@karenhynes@rjquillin@ScottW58 My standalone freezer is bursting at the seams! And I’m dry ageing two rib subprimals that will need space in there also - they’re good but not Flannery. I’ve got lots of meat eating ahead of me!
@chefjess@danandlisa@InFrom@karenhynes@klezman@rjquillin
Don’t get me wrong I love Flannery burgers lamb and a bunch of other stuff but I was thinking the other day that Flannery steaks seem to have a certain flavor profile maybe from ageing or maybe because they use Holstein cows? Probably the ageing? I’m not saying bad just different than I sometimes want so I have been buying more Morgan ranch steaks anyways.
@chefjess@danandlisa@InFrom@karenhynes@klezman@ScottW58
My earlier comment wasn’t that I didn’t like the MR cuts I’ve had, but frankly a couple did disappoint. Rather dry and chewy, where a similar Flannery cut cooked the same wasn’t. They just seem too lean I think, in general. Perhaps just the cuts I’ve gotten in the offered assortments…
If you have a smoker, thought the MR big box was the offer to grab. Got mine just before they sold out. Now I’ll have to throw a bbq party with the Dino ribs and brisket.
I limited my wine buying to 20 bottles…I’m so proud of myself. I’ve been spoiled and inundated by de Negoce. I also have a 20 lb. Boneless rib roast in the middle of a 40 day dry age at a local place, so…
Virage 6 i think
Kelley Fox 6 tottles
Goodfellow 12 bottles
I got Dicks
Orr 6 bottles
Morgan Ranch bunch of stuff
Flannery lamb and a couple steaks
Croma Vera 3 bottles?
Veleta tuna mackeral sardines
Stellareese 6 bottles
Saunter 4 bottles
I really only wanted food but I think Marcus naming one of his offers after me got me all jacked up ugh!
@ScottW58 Did you get the small Dick’s, medium Dick’s or large Dick’s? I didn’t get any, since the bag clearly says Salty. Also, which Stellareese did you get? I have some 2015’s in the stash, so I went with 16’s and 17’s. BTW, I had purchased 2013 Greyscale CS back in 2017 and only now opened a bottle (10 year rule and all). Absolutely delicious.
@ScottW58 I had 2 2012’s that must have been just ok, cause we don’t remember them. (Could have been that the 2012 was an abundant but tasty vintage.) This 2013 was outstanding. (More concentration with this vintage.) I try to stick to the 10 year rule and it paid off for these. Glad I’ve got more (so is +1). Added note: CT has ltd. and dated comments. This is apparently not a very well frequented vineyard.
Campesino Grenache - case
Cabot 2 x 3 packs - aged Zins and Marier reds
Chris James - 6 pack Oregon Pinot Noir
Baer - 3 pack of 2015 Washington reds
Deaver - 3 pack of Amador reds
Was hoping that Wilde Farm (Syrah) and Metrick (mixed reds although picked 3 pack of Pinots from this site - delivered today) would be there but not this year!
If they participate (they didn’t last year) I’ll be buying some Beau Rivage chenin blanc. And Oregon chardonnay from several wineries. As a start.
No idea who’s participating, but we’ll probably go in on some Pinot, some bubbly, and something new. We’ll see! I hear Cabot is back this year, so might have to re-up there…
With the Sandlands release today, though, that’s going to be a lot of wine this week!
Must be a Cali thing…or a MEH thing-ingk
Looks like Scherrer is doing a mini vertical of RRV Pinot from 2014-19 (6 pack) for $300. A bit pricey, but a nice library offering there.
@hscottk How’d you figure that out? His post only said a vertical with no other details!
@klezman wineries know how to make wine, not manage their websites. Offers are already up for Baer and Cabot as well. Lots of library offers there. Google is your friend
Oh, and Scherrer has a few other library gems as well… Calypso Syrah 3 pack also out there.
@hscottk @klezman
If you’re not buying his OMV your not buying Scherrer of course YMMV
@hscottk @ScottW58 the OMV is great, but I haven’t yet tried the shale terrace. Picked some older Pinot during the COVID sales that has been excellent.
@hscottk @ScottW58 couldn’t find Cabot, but Scherrer has some interesting offers. Pretty pricey though, depending on shipping cost.
@hscottk @klezman
Pricey is in the eye of the beholder
@hscottk @klezman @ScottW58 I picked up a mix pack from Scherrer a few years ago at BD and loved it, sadly my limited budget says forgetaboutit
@hscottk hasn’t you had Baer before? I’m thinking of the 3 pack of the 2014 but it’s hard to tell the style and the two tasters seemed to have slightly conflicting notes.
@klezman I have not tried Baer. I just saw their BD offering on their site.
Orr sent out an email about BD but didn’t specify about offers. I’ve enjoyed Ocelli and Suzor in the past so likely in in but also looking to try new wineries
@losthighwayz so, you just go somewhere and buy more wine, on a Friday? Once a year? IDK
@kitkat34 @losthighwayz If you enjoyed a wine wootoff, you’ll love this.
@InFrom @losthighwayz I’ve only heard about it, never seen. It’s on CM?
@kitkat34 wineberserkers.com. They also have food on this day. It starts at 7:30 in the morning. If you see something you like, don’t hesitate or it will be gone. I believe you can look at last year thread and see what is typically offered.
@InFrom @kitkat34 @losthighwayz wineberserkers.com
You will see quite a number of familiar names over there, especially if you know people’s real names from here.
@kitkat34 pretty much
This event happens once a year in late January. Wineries and other wine related businesses put up offers throughout the day. It’s a great way to try something new from small producers you may otherwise never know about. Google Berserker Day 2023 and it’ll take you to the site. You’ll be hooked
@InFrom @klezman @losthighwayz @danandlisa
Thanks for the info! Not sure how I missed it before
What are your PNW/Oregon Pinot recommendations from prior BDs - Shiba Wichern? Kelley Fox? Others?
@ctmariner We’ve liked Suzor
@davirom Thanks - good reminder - I think a got a couple of bottles from them in a BD12 swap
@ctmariner very happy with Shiba Wichern, auxerrois. No notes.
Pinot was “buy again”
@msten
@ctmariner Franny Beck had a killer deal last year for their “Our wines” pinot. Also look for Goodfellow, Vincent and Championship Bottle.
@ctmariner I’ve liked the Franny Becks I bought quite a bit. Last year I shared a case of a 4-year vertical of their second-label Pinot, Our Wines. I’ve only tried one of them so far (the oldest, 2017) it was great.
@ctmariner @DanOR A cross-post!
@DanOR @InFrom Thanks - I will take a look and see if Franny has a way of shipping to (high cost/tax) CT!
@ctmariner Franny Beck and Longplay are my two favorite value plays
@ctmariner @pjmartin Big fan of Longplay here as well! Was a club member but was in to many clubs so had to quit it.
@dawnlac @pjmartin Damn - Longplay dies not ship to CT
@ctmariner I’ve bought from Silas Wines twice, and enjoyed every wine I’ve bought from them, pinot or otherwise. I’m hoping they’ll be participating again this year.
@ctmariner @worbx they are. Another one I thought about before going back to old favourites this time.
SABELLI-FRISCH Emailed his offers. I’ve enjoyed his orange wine and considering the reds sampler 6 pack for $99. Anyone try his reds?
@losthighwayz they are all interesting and different. The pricing is rather sharp on his list this year. Worst that happens is you don’t like a bottle you paid less than $20 to acquire.
@klezman agree. I bought a case of the milk fed rousanne for $89 last year!
@klezman @losthighwayz Agree.
Good to see Cabot back - picked up 6 bottles
Did you get the Virage?
@ScottW58
I went in on halfsies of the 6-pack.
@ScottW58 yes. Will calculate and let you know the bill. Got a full case so the discount is better than just the 6 pack.
Oh I’m getting some Dicks chips for sure, that write up was just to good
@ScottW58
Chips??? There are chips???
@karenhynes @ScottW58
The chips were part of our tasting on Tuesday. We had a good time discussing
Scott and I are both Goodfellow offers. Have to buy. Marcus makes some fantastic wines
@chefjess what’s a good offer based on your experience?
@chefjess I noticed that! Unfortunately (fortunately?) I didn’t purchase either of you. Went for the 6 pack of 2013.
@losthighwayz

POPSOCKETS! COURT DOCKETS! FOLK ROCK HITS! AWESOME!
@chefjess @klezman
Well that’s just insulting
@chefjess @losthighwayz
They are good people with great and fairly priced wines.
@chefjess @losthighwayz @ScottW58 they are excellent to deal with for sure. Haven’t met them yet but talked to Megan on the phone a couple times.
@chefjess I prefer Burgundian Pinots
Earthy, mushroomy and on the lighter side of the spectrum
Anyone tried Chris James wines - I was looking at the mixed reds 6 pack?
@ctmariner I liked the mixed whites I tried the year before last, fwiw.
So many great deals on the cutting room floor this year! Suzor, Franny Beck, Kelly Fox, Briceland, Shiba Wichern, and a couple more.
Got some Cabot, Virage, red newt, Goodfellow, and Tercero since the rose deal was to good to pass up.
@klezman I’m not a fan of the last two or three rose vintages for some reason. Been meaning to try his Pinots though
Anybody tried Stellareese wines? I have an itchy trigger finger
@ScottW58 traded a bottle with Bill but haven’t tried it yet…
Pinots to look for: Silas, Goodfellow, Longboard, Suzor. Did I miss any?
Ocelli and Orr also on my list (non Pinot)
So far I haven’t seen Flannery or Morgan Ranch. Did they sell out yesterday?
@davirom OK, Flannery is up, I guess MR will show up eventually. This padawan must learn patience.
@davirom
Looks like MR is up now.
@karenhynes Thanks, order in
So far…
Orr party 6 pack
Sandar &Hem Grenache rose case
Campesino rose case
@losthighwayz Have you tried the S&H rose?
@hscottk yes! This is my third year purchasing during BD. A steal at this price imo
Made in the leaner style with zippy acidity
Very well made imo
Stylistically similar to Campesino rose if you’ve had it
Has anyone tried the Sandler whole cluster Pinots?
@losthighwayz earlier vintages, yes; good.
@rjquillin yes his 4 pack composed of older vintages
Croma Vera offer is intriguing.
I need to stop looking.
@losthighwayz
That was the one I tasted. The Albariño blossomed day 2 as did the Grenache. The revelacion needs some time but should age well.
@chefjess thanks for sharing
Would you say they’re a good QPR at BD discount for a case? Also, I’m very s sensitive to oak
Was it perceptible in any of the reds? Thank you
@losthighwayz
I think so. I didn’t detect any oak but may not have the same sensitivity. I can say I was hesitant after the first night but that Grenache was still beautiful on day 3. The Albariño was full of citrus and great minerality.

@rjquillin @ScottW58
Haha! I thought about it but I have a big deadline coming up 1/31. I did order both of my purchases yesterday.
@karenhynes @ScottW58 I was at work -location- for over 10 hours, but only about 8 on the clock.

Was hoping that Wilde Farm (Syrah) and Metrick (mixed reds although picked 3 pack of Pinots from this site - delivered today) would be there but not this year!
