In the late 1930s, our Grandfather, Irv Bliss, first visited Mendocino County and spotted a picturesque ranch among the rolling hills and unspoiled land. Years later, when Irv learned of a Mendocino property for sale, he gathered all his savings and placed a bid – sight unseen. As fate would have it, the plot Irv purchased was the original 450-acre estate that had captivated his imagination years before. Seventy years later, we still carry Irv’s love for the land through our fourth generation of family farmers. We celebrate Irv’s legacy by showcasing the rich fruit we grow on our property and putting our own Bliss into every bottle of wine we produce.

Tasting Notes
Our perennial “pizza/pasta wine” has become ‘Blissful Red’ - starring Syrah, Merlot, Zinfandel, & Pinot Noir. It has a nose of blackberry jam & vanilla custard which greet you, followed by hints of mocha. A rich mouth feel bursting with sweet berry compote in the mid-palate is followed by root beer spiced fruit in the finish.

Brutocao Family Vineyards is a tale of two families who combined their passion and expertise to establish one of Mendocino County’s most notable wineries. In 1910, the Brutocao family brought with them a love for wine when they emigrated from Treviso, Italy (a small town near Venice). Len Brutocao met Martha Bliss while attending the University of California, Berkeley. Martha’s father, Irv, had been farming in Mendocino since 1943. After Len and Martha married, the families joined forces and continued to sell their grapes to well-known Sonoma and Napa wineries for many years before starting to make their own wine in 1980. They selected the Lion of St. Mark as their symbol of family tradition and quality. The heart of that quality is in their land: over 400 acres of vineyards in Hopland and 12.5 acres of Pinot Noir in Anderson Valley.

Lab rat checking in! We are actually enjoying the merlot right now. It’s tart, and dry. Partial to cab sauv, we enjoy this merlot. Notes of cherry and plum, well balanced, but no peppery bite. I enjoy the full body and the fruit forward taste. Would drink again, especially at this price point. Enjoy!
Rushing off to a bike race, so this will be short and sweet (unlike the wine.) After a one day rest from the Cross-country Trek, opened to check pairing w our BBQ pork chops, roasted root veg and mixed salad (w pea greens). Nice rich red, on the nose: muted red fruits.
First taste, pre-food: red bright fruits, just a second of strawberry like from a grenache mix (still haven’t searched up varieties involved). No detectable oakiness.
With the dinner, no revelations. As a comparison, switched off tastes with the bottom of a stored bottle of Rioja Rosado (2021 Burgo Viejo) and a 2020 Chateau Montfollet (70/30 Merlot/Malbec). The rosado really engaged the pork nicely, neither of the reds did. The “Grand Vin de Bordeaux” was dusty and drier.
DW’s first taste reports: “deep/full” ; “like you could walk into it.” Not sure if that was an exaggeration meant as an example for our non-drinking 21 y.o. we’re trying to culture up (“Blecch” is usually that one’s main wine taste note.)
I found it a good example of a daily drinker especially at the offered price. TYVM for the ratting oppty.
Dessert: no major evolution or engagement with the dark chocolate caramel morsels. It wasn’t fighting that taste, but not an engagement or significant compliment. Good buy at the price!

Sorry ‘Mates for the posting delay. It was a crazy time for me getting RAT Duty. I’ve been on some meds recently and wasn’t sure if I could consume alcohol. Plus, last weekend and this week I’ve been fermenting and canning. So during this process, I opened the bottle of Bliss Family Vineyards 2020 Zinfandel early yesterday.
I was excited when the nose showed spice and cherry. Visually, as I held the glass up to outside light, I was rewarded with a nice translucent red and medium body Zinfandel. On the initial taste, I got the same spice and cherry, but the finish seemed to show acidity with an alcohol burn.
I thought this wine would go great with a nice greasy burger. So when I went to get more canning supplies, I got a Double Dave with all the fixin’s. This did not go the way I thought! I thought the fixin’s muted the wine. So back to canning for a while. For the rest of the night all I got from sampling the wine was the spice, acidity, and alcohol. The fruit disappeared. Got to bed at 4:15 am.
Today, I finished the last of the bottle. Spice, acidity, and maybe a hint of cherry-strawberry with the alcohol burn. I’m totally overloaded with wine and I’m passing up all the other great offers right now. For this offer, it depends on what you like, especially with three varietals. I hate predicting the cost of a wine offers. If I find a wine I really like, I buy it. And that philosophy overloaded my basement.
One final thought: I was making Bread & Butter pickles yesterday and I had to take the mixture up to a boiling point, so I’m talking vinegar and spices in the air. I’m also on two meds. Did any of what I said above be related to the canning environment and wine tasting? No idea. But I’ve consumed hundreds of bottles of wine (more like a couple thousand) so I know what my palate likes, So I hope there are more Rats that got the Zin to help everyone over this two day offer.
A final shout out to Alice and to all the WCC people behind the scenes! Excellent Staff David!
