Unidentified objects in space are closer than they may appear. This Grenache-based sparkling wine is particularly close to our Rhônish hearts. OVNI Brut Rosé is an elegant solution for when (profoundly) out-of-town visitors unexpectedly drop in. To be served as ice-cold as space itself.
While Bonny Doon Vineyard began with the (in retrospect) foolish attempt to replicate Burgundy in California, Randall Grahm realized early on that he would have far more success creating more distinctive and original wines working with Rhône varieties in the Central Coast of California. The key learning here (achieved somewhat accidentally but fortuitously) was that in a warm, Mediterranean climate, it is usually blended wines that are most successful. In 1986 Bonny Doon Vineyard released the inaugural vintage (1984) of Le Cigare Volant, an homage to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and this continues as the winery’s flagship/starship brand.
Since then, Bonny Doon Vineyard has enjoyed a long history of innovation – the first to truly popularize Rhône grapes in California, to successfully work with cryo-extraction for sundry “Vins de Glacière, the first to utilize microbullage in California, the first to popularize screwcaps for premium wines, and, quite significantly, the first to embrace true transparency in labeling with its ingredient labeling initiative. The upside of all of this activity has brought an extraordinary amount of creativity and research to the California wine scene; the doon-side, as it were, was perhaps an ever so slight inability to focus, to settle doon, if you will, into a single, coherent direction.

These are pop tops; is it 750ml? I’m assuming yes because I just went all zealous-equable-tortellini up in here.
I got nothin’ on tortellini, but recently the youngest youngster asked for dinner pop-tarts. He was talking about ravioli’s. Yeah. He might be in to the tortellini’s one of these days…
When I opened the package I was somewhat surprised to find a sparkling Rose’. If they looked at my ordering history I very seldom order a white and never a sparkling Rose’. That said I called a friend whose taste is much the same as mine (Cab/Merlot/Zin) and we trudged ahead. Initial taste did not show us much but to our surprise we started to enjoy it. It is refreshing and goes down easily-good for a very social setting. I forgot to mention the bottle cap was unusual but not off putting. We roped our husbands into trying some but while they didn’t dislike it they were no help. Not too much on hand to try with but it was good with watermelon, salsa and peanut M&M’s. We decided it was a good summer party wine .
Now that I have seen the price if you are having an event I would grab this!!
I was so excited when I opened the box to find a bottle of bubbly! Love having a glass (or more) of sparkling during the super hot summers here.
We had the usual tasters: Myself, Mom (we both love bubbles and Dad (loves Dom and some Proseccos)
The bottle had been in my regular fridge for approx. 2 days. It sat out for approx. 20 min before we opened it.
Color: Pale apricot - not your typical pink Rose
moms initial comment “I like rose to be pink”
Aroma: Dad “refreshing” , I smelled stone fruit, apricot, peach maybe nectarine. The aroma is very subtle.
Taste: We all agreed it was a nice light apricot flavor. Very refreshing! It isn’t sweet or dry, it’s just right. Maybe perceived sweetness? Almost leaves that slightly dry feeling in your mouth like after you’ve eaten a peach that is just a tiny bit not ripe.
Mouth Feel: We were all surprised by the most amazing tiny bubbles that fill your mouth. Mom said it’s like tiny pop rocks exploding in your mouth. We loved the amount and size of the tiny bubbles!
We let the remaining wine in our glass come to room temperature. The bubbles were almost non existent, but the flavor was still delicious!
Final thoughts:
This is not your typical Rose, it is more complex than most we’ve had. We typically like our whites and bubbles on the warmer side. This is one of the only ones we like super cold as well as warmer. We loved the bubbles and flavor when it was super cold. Would like to know the advantage of the closure chosen.
We guessed the price point to be $20-25. At the price point it is today, going to get a case.
Thank you Alice and WD!! I hope everyone has a great weekend!

@SmilingBoognish ravioli == “dinner pop-tarts”…I love that! But makes me wonder how large are the ravioli that you serve?!?!
Might make great summer gifts. I know I have no room for it.

@mommadeb
I was also wondering about the closure choice. See those on pet nat, but don’t know why.
Also happy to see you post; hope that school is done for the year and you can have lots of opportunity to enjoy these over the balmy summer months.
Let me know if you make it up to Tampa. Would love to finally meet in person some day!

Any chance we can get the RS on this? I am assuming very low since it is described as a brut but wanted to check…hoping it is bone dry…

Maybe I missed it, but…any info on how this was made? Pet nat? Charmat? And yes, rs numbers would be appreciated.
@hscottk A close scrutiny of the bottle label shows “méthode traditionelle” just above the “2020”.
@Mark_L Thanks!
Had to settle for a four pack since the cases are sold out. Maybe I’ll snag a case later if they find more of miraculously come back.
