The 2017 Grenache offers brilliant expressions of our estate terrior, where ample sun exposure encourages full varietal flavors and cool marine breezes ensure a core of refreshing acidity.
This wine presents fragrant aromas of red fruit with hints of blueberry, cola and cedar. A supple, rounded palate delivers jammy flavors of dried cherry, raspberry and pomegranate with intriguing notes of earth and white pepper. A juicy, supple finish lingers with fine acidity and beautiful structure.
Estate Vineyard
The 35-acre Brick Barn estate vineyard lies just north of the Santa Ynez River in a largely unexplored winegrowing corridor near the city of Buellton in the western Santa Ynez Valley. With the Pacific Ocean just 10 miles away, the marine influence is forceful, yet solar exposure remains persistent—a providential combination that produces fruit with extraordinary dimension. This wine is a blend of all three Grenache blocks and clones at our estate: Block 15 (Clone 513), Block 16 (Clone 362) and Block 17 (Clone 136). These blocks are planted along an upper highland at an elevation of 550 feet. Here, rocky loam and limestone soils impart qualities of intensity and finesse. Variations in sun exposure from block to block allow for added depth and complexity in the final blend.
Winemaking
After night harvesting, the fruit was destemmed and cold soaked for three days to initiate a gentle extraction of color and flavor. The wine was then fermented in small open-top bins, with two punchdowns and one pumpover applied daily to ensure continued balanced extraction and aeration. After gentle pressing, the wine was settled and racked to French oak barrels, where it aged for 24 months prior to final blending and bottling.

At Brick Barn Wine Estate we make the wines we love and grow the grapes that inspire us!
For more than 50 years, we have overseen and worked this land. Today, we fulfill its destiny as a premium wine estate at the westernmost frontier of the Santa Ynez Valley AVA.
Brick Barn Wine Estate founder, Norman Williams, originally purchased this land from the Buell family in 1968. Shortly thereafter, the property became home to an Arabian horse farm, replete with a 36-stall brick barn created by an Italian stonemason in the early 1970s.
Norman and his wife Kathleen were drawn to the idea of growing grapes—and ultimately making wine. They saw immense promise in their land, and they knew that its distinct location could create exceptional wines. In 2012, they planted 35 acres. The specific varieties were chosen for their synergy with the estate’s unique growing conditions, and because both Norman and Kathleen were passionate about them.
The original brick barn has now been reimagined as a winery and gathering place, while other portions of the ranch continue to be dedicated to organic vegetable farming and cattle ranching.

the first vintage of Grenache was in 2016. In 2015 we had a limited vintage which consisted of our Clone 828 Pinot Noir and 2015 Cabernet Franc Reserve.
I received the golden ticket, thank you very much! I knew it was a Grenache from Brick Barn but I did not look anything up as I wanted to be unbiased. The bottle arrived this morning and tonight I had a monthly commissioner board (bored) meeting for our community water board. My husband works later so I needed to make a dinner that could reheat. Once I opened the wine, the cork smelled like sour cherry. The first taste of wine was over ripe raspberries. There was no smell from the bottle. I only had an half hour before I needed to eat and drink a little (for science and ratting sake) before the meeting. The nose did not improve. Dinner was marinated tri trip on the grill (an nod to the trip tip bbq’s I had as a high schooler in Carpinteria, CA), dill potato salad (from my garden), roasted poblanao pepper, and heirloom tomatoes with lovely balsamic that @Winedavid49 hooked me on. The wine got lost in the potato salad and the pepper. It was excellent with the tomatoes and the tri tip. I had a slice of blue cheese with the tri tip and to my surprise, the wine brought out the funkiness of the blue cheese which I really enjoyed. The Grenache also had a hint of white pepper and Coke, not Pepsi. After the three hour meeting, I had a glass. The nose is better, but still not there. It does has some legs.The sour cherry, pepper, Coke,and raspberry are more prominent. My husband who listen to the lovely meeting while drinking the Grenache said it was good and he thought 15 was a fair price. I really like Grenache and currently have none in my pile. I think this wine would benefit for aeration or cellaring or maybe both. It has a lovely cranberry color which I hope my pictures come thru. Thanks again for this amazing opportunity
How much more are you saving by buying a full case?
(Note: Tax & Shipping not included in savings calculations)
2017 Brick Barn Grenache - $60 = 23.07%
@brickbarnwine
What you see above is not intended to reflect the total discount - it’s the extra discount % one gets by purchasing a full case. (The difference between the 3 bottle rate of $21.66/bottle vs. a Case of 12 for $16.67/bottle - IOW, $16.67 is 23.07% less than $21.66)
A few blurbs about the winery. Several Brick Barn reviews in Wine Enthusiast but can’t come up with the one mentioned here for this wine. Not published yet?
@kaolis@WCCWineGirl We had a little socially distanced celebratory dance when they scores came through!
We grafted more Cabernet Franc onto two blocks of our Grenache earlier this year. The Grenache clonal blend’s days are numbered… 2019 was the last harvest with all three clones.
@brickbarnwine@kaolis@WCCWineGirl Could you explain why the Grenache days are numbered? I thought grape vines got better with age but I live on a sandpile, so what do I know.
@brickbarnwine@foxrunner@kaolis@WCCWineGirl
While I do certainly like me a nice bottle of CF, still don’t fully understand why you are pulling a couple of the clones?
Just not working in the area? Larry @tercerowines seems to suggest they do well, unless I misread. No demand, or just hoping the CF will do, what…?
You’ve nearly, with all the participation, pushed me over on this one.
@brickbarnwine@foxrunner@kaolis@rjquillin@WCCWineGirl I believe CF can grow well in the area but it doesn’t mean that it does everywhere - and it depends upon the ‘style’ of Cab Franc that you enjoy - more ‘bordeaux’ style or Loire. Cheers
@brickbarnwine@kaolis@rjquillin@tercerowines@WCCWineGirl Love to see a future offering featuring the Rhone Blend, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. I know it is easy on the case splitters to have a single varietal, but when it is a new winery getting a diversified offer lets us better judge the winemaker and his craft. @brickbarnwine thank you for your thoughtful participation!
The Grenache and Cabernet Franc both do extremely well for us…
Currently, our Cabernet Franc is only available to members with their December allocation and then it’s gone. By grafting additional Cabernet Franc, we will be able to offer both varieties to all of our guests.
We have 1,100 acres on our property and only 35 acres planted. We have identified a third vineyard site which we feel would be equally as well suited for Grenache and maybe even our missing M for a GSM blend…
The pics!!! Ummm, Adrian put the 2017 Grenache through vigorous tiny human testing before sending it to Casemates… (No mini Adrian’s actually consumed alcohol…)
No pics this time as I’m still working, as I have late shift tonight. So having my quick dinner break with a small glass and then back to work. Color in my Govino glass is a light cherry red. Only opened it a bit ago, so nose seems a little muted. But I seem to get some soft peppery notes. Cheron98 mentioned vanilla bourbon barrels when she tasted it later on. On the palate, getting a good amount of heat and pepper tones. Probably some dark fruit with a bit of tartness. Could use running through a vinturi right now. After the bottle sat open for a couple of hours, the nose opened up and became more pleasing. Cheron98 then also poured a glass for herself to taste. Having difficulty describing the flavors, but we do like it. Has a good amount of typical grenache characteristics to it.
Will try to taste some more tonight to update anything further.
I admit, I peeped at the winery website for this wine before we tried it out, and thought their description sounded very “typical grenache” - until I saw “blueberries” and “jammy”. This made me wonder if there’s something like a Petite Sirah or regular Syrah blended into it in a small portion, but there’s no blending information available anywhere. I was hoping to see some of that with the offer being posted today, but alas.
As we were trying it out, I said to HAK - this is not a $44 Grenache, but I’d pay $25 for it. Once again, Casemates delivers on a solid price offer.
Every sniff of the wine simply brought “vanilla bourbon barrels” to my mind. It was hot (too much alcohol) on the palate, overpowering anything more nuanced, and with everything we had going on last night, we really weren’t able to do justice for tasting it.
So here I am, it’s noon, and I’m having a freshly poured-through-the-vinturi glass. Boy, has it opened up.
On the nose: Cherries - bright, ripe cherries, and yes, there’s that cola underneath it. Think Cherry Coke, but not quite as sweet. Floral berry notes shine through as it continues to open up. It’s quite lovely and definitely a good sniffer.
On the palate: Huh. Blueberries. And blackberries… and just summer berries. Vanilla, pepper, and a pleasant smokiness evolve on the mid-palate, and finishes tart, yet smooth with a hint of tobacco. The finish lingers pleasantly.
Opinion is definitely improved after letting this air out and running it through the Vinturi. Definitely priced very well here. This is a good one to ponder - chew on it for a little bit to let the wine warm up in your mouth and bloom into something great for a summer or fall evening. Should go equally well with sweet-sauced BBQ pork ribs or a thick grilled pork chop, but lay off the red meat and delicate seafood.
Blending information: 15 barrels were selected in the making of this 100% estate grown Grenache with 5 barrels of each clone (513, 362 & 136) represented in equal parts.
My name is Lydia. I am the Membership and DTC Sales Manager at Brick Barn Wine Estate. I’ve been on the BB team since just after our tasting room opened in 2018.
I also have Adrian Bolshoi our winemaker (my hubby) on hand for questions. Adrian took over our winemaking operations starting last harvest and oversaw the blending and bottling of the 2017 Grenache we have available today.
Santa Barbara County Grenache grows best on the edge of cool/warm weather, and the Brick Barn Estate Vineyards, in the area between Sta Rita Hills and Ballard Canyon (Buellton Flats) is an epic spot for it. Enjoy this fine wine!
@WesHagen indeed, my friend. But the great thing about this variety is that it is a bit of a chameleon and can create awesome wines from all climates - they just express themselves differently. Love you, brother!
@WesHagen Yes, it’s an amazing little slice of heaven!
For everyone else… We have two distinct vineyard sites on our property. The red varietals are grown in our upper vineyard, which is a hilltop site comprised primarily of rocky clay-loam soil. The upper vineyard site sees the cool morning fog renowned in the Sta. Rita Hills and then burns off to provide a persistent heat more typical of the SYV. The upper vineyard is also located in a unique bowl shaped area on the hilltop, which protects it from winds that come through our transverse valley.
The lower vineyard is located in the Santa Ynez Valley River Basin and is home to our white varietals. This site sees more typical Sta. Rita Hills weather which makes it a perfect spot for our Chardonnay. The sandy soils also provide excellent drainage which pumps up the flavor profile and aromatics of our lesser known varietals such as Albarino and Vermentino.
@justinh love to hear about love for the variety - it is so darned special and is ‘my pinot’ in that I find it to be as tricky to work with, and it is as ‘complex’ aromatically and flavor wise but with different flavors . . .
@justinh@tercerowines Funny you should say that - in our household, I’m not a fan of Pinot while @hitanykey42 is, and I enjoy Grenache while HAK generally doesn’t. I’m bringing him around though…
Adrian loves a well done pinot noir. From the Brick Barn lineup, he’s currently favoring clone 777 and clone 828. Outside of Brick Barn he is usually selecting Pinot Noirs sourced from Bentrock and Radian vineyards.
Right now this Grenache is doing the trick for me. I really enjoy the bright jammy notes and the Grenache has paired well with Adrian’s experimental smoker recipes (smoked wild boar) this summer.

If these were planted in 2012, is this the first vintage?
@klezman CT thinks there is a '16 as well.
But the media/trade page on the producers site lists neither.
@klezman CT shows a 2016.
@hscottk @klezman @rjquillin The winery website does have a 2016 Grenache listed under “Library Wines”.
