The Syrah presents warm aromas of red cherry, plum, and spice with accents of dried herbs. A jammy, sumptuous texture offers rounded flavors of cherry, blueberry, cinnamon, and toasted oak with trailing notes of white pepper and mocha. Juicy acidity and plump tannins converge on a smooth, structured finish.
Vineyard Notes
The 35-acre Brick Barn estate vineyard lies just north of the Santa Ynez River in a largely unexplored wine-growing corridor near the city of Buellton in the western Santa Ynez Valley. The Syrah finds harmony and complexity as a blend of two estate blocks—Block 8 (Clone 1), which produces dark fruit with robust tannins; and Block 14 (Clone 470) which yields a lighter character and red fruit tones. These blocks are planted along an upper highland at an elevation of 550 feet. Here, rocky loam and limestone soils provide ideal conditions for classic Rhône varieties. Persistent sun exposure ensures ripe flavors, while the Pacific Ocean—just 10 miles away—delivers daily cooling that maintains fruit acidity and structure.
Winemaker Notes
After night harvesting, the fruit was destemmed and cold soaked for five days to initiate a gentle extraction of color and flavor. The wine was then fermented in a mix of small open-top bins and tanks, with two punch-downs and one pump overperformed daily for balanced extraction and aeration. In the classic Côte-Rôtie style, a small lot of whole-cluster Viognier (10%) was incorporated into the fermentation to intensify the color and lift to the aroma profile. After gentle pressing, the lots were settled and racked to French (90%) and American (10%) oak barrels, where they aged for 20 months. Forty percent of the barrels featured new oak to accentuate the wine with hints of sweet spice and toasted oak. The French oak imparted a subtle toasted oak structure, while the complement of American oak layered in sweeter notes of vanilla and baking spice. French oak: subtle toasted oak flavors American oak: more sweetness
Food Pairing Notes
The Syrah makes an excellent match for winter beef stews, rosemary pork chops, mushroom casserole, and grilled lamb with herbes de Provençe.

2021 Brick Barn Rhone Blend, Santa Inez Valley
Tasting Notes
The Rhône Blend presents heady aromas of strawberry cream, crushed blueberry, and earthy loam. The palate is deep and engulfing, showing concentrated flavors of black cherry, blackberry, and strawberry with notes of white pepper, tobacco leaf, and summer herbs. Hints of cinnamon and mocha join rustic tannins on a rich, rounded finish.
Vineyard Notes
The 35-acre Brick Barn estate vineyard lies just north of the Santa Ynez River in a largely unexplored wine-growing corridor near the city of Buellton in the western Santa Ynez Valley. This wine represents a barrel selection from our three Grenache and Syrah blocks, all planted along an upper highland at an elevation of 550 feet. Here, rocky loam and limestone soils provide ideal conditions for classic Rhône varieties. Persistent sun exposure ensures ripe flavors, while the Pacific Ocean—just 10 miles away—delivers daily cooling that maintains fruit acidity and structure. These conditions combine to create a unique growing environment that is ideal for both Grenache and Syrah.
Winemaker Notes
The fruit was harvested at night and delivered to the winery in the cool morning hours. The Grenache and Syrah lots were separately fermented in open-top bins and open-top tanks. The Syrah was co-fermented with a small lot of Viognier, a classic Rhône Valley technique used to amplify the Syrah’s color and aroma profile. After gentle pressing, the separate lots were settled and racked to 30 percent new French oak barrels. At the conclusion of aging, Adrian identified standout barrels; conducted several blending trials; and ultimately settled upon a deliciously symmetrical blend of Grenache and Syrah.
Food Pairing Notes
The elegant heft of the Rhône Blend makes a great match for hearty foods, including rack of lamb, grilled tri-tip, pasta Bolognese and hard, aged cheeses.

2021 Brick Barn Grenache, Santa Inez Valley
Tasting Notes
The Grenache offers elegant aromas of red fruits, rose petals, tea leaves, and sandalwood. The mouthfeel is lush, rounded, and delicate, showing flavors of raspberry, strawberry, and cherry cola with hints of cinnamon graham cracker. Juicy acidity flows seamlessly into a soft, silky finish.
The Vineyard
The 35-acre Brick Barn estate vineyard lies just north of the Santa Ynez River in a largely unexplored wine-growing corridor near the city of Buellton in the western Santa Ynez Valley. With the Pacific Ocean just 10 miles away, the marine influence is forceful, yet solar exposure remains persistent—a providential combination that produces fruit with extraordinary dimension. This wine is a blend of two Grenache blocks and clones at our estate: Block 15 (Clone 513) and Block 16 (Clone 362). These blocks are planted along an upper highland at an elevation of 550 feet. Here, rocky loam and limestone soils impart qualities of intensity and finesse. Clone 513 brings fruit-forward qualities of strawberry and raspberry to the wine, while Clone 362 is notable for imparting enhanced color and body.
Winemaking Notes
The fruit was harvested at night to capture fresh varietal character. Upon delivery to the winery, the grapes were destemmed and cold soaked for four days, allowing for a gentle extraction of color and flavor. Winemaker Adrian Bolshoi fermented the wine in open-top stainless steel fermenters, applying two punch-downs and one pump-over on a daily basis. The punch-downs brought added extraction, while the pump overs promoted aeration for healthy yeast activity. After fermentation, the wine was gently pressed, settled, and racked in French oak barrels, where it matured for 20 months prior to final blending and bottling. Adrian chose to age the wine entirely in neutral oak, allowing for pure varietal Grenache qualities to shine through the wine.
Food Pairing
The 2021 Grenache is a perfect match for medium-weight savory fare, including slow-cooked pork, white bean stew, braised veal chops, and pan-seared lamb medallions.

At Brick Barn Wine Estate, we make the wines we love and grow the grapes that inspire us!
For more than 50 years, we have overseen and worked this land. Today, we fulfill its destiny as a premium wine estate at the westernmost frontier of the Santa Ynez Valley AVA.
Brick Barn Wine Estate founder, Norman Williams, originally purchased this land from the Buell family in 1968. Shortly thereafter, the property became home to an Arabian horse farm, replete with a 36-stall brick barn created by an Italian stonemason in the early 1970s.
Norman and his wife Kathleen were drawn to the idea of growing grapes—and ultimately making wine. They saw immense promise in their land, and they knew that its distinct location could create exceptional wines. In 2012, they planted 35 acres. The specific varieties were chosen for their synergy with the estate’s unique growing conditions, and because both Norman and Kathleen were passionate about them.
The original brick barn has now been reimagined as a winery and gathering place, while other portions of the ranch continue to be dedicated to organic vegetable farming and cattle ranching.

Typing this up while working due to a bit of a hectic week. As always, happy to see a surprise shipment coming from casemates. Upon opening the box and seeing it was a Syrah that peaked the interest as we do enjoy that varietal.
Opened it up on Monday shortly before dinner, though I did intend to open it earlier due to it being a young syrah. Once we got around to tasting it and trying it, we weren’t totally sure what to make of it. It was certainly a bit hot on the nose and tight, not letting off too many characteristics. Let it sit in glass for a bit while starting to eat, tasting it occasionally. It’s not a big standard syrah profile, and my wife stated that if she didn’t know it was a syrah ahead of time that she might have thought it was a Pinot Noir based on some of the brambly notes (and what she calls a slight twiggy aftertaste).
It certainly does have a good amount of the peppery spice typical of syrah, but mixed with the herbal tones we both tasted. I had a couple more glasses the following night after letting the bottle sit closed on the counter overnight. The heat had since blown off and the dark fruit is coming through a bit more.
All in all a decent wine, but not the profile of a Syrah that we personally go for. I can certainly see others enjoying this one, especially those that also have a fondness for Pinot Noir (which we generally do not).
Do you like rich, full bodied syrahs? Me, too! Ours is lighter due to it’s growing condition. We have a couple barrels where it hits that mark but once its blended, it just adds to the overall structure.
I received a bottle of the 2021 Brick Barn Rhone Blend a few days ago, which gave me the opportunity to try it several times with different pairings.
Initial impressions directly upon opening the (room temperature) bottle:
Look: The wine is a vibrant, translucent, ruby red. It is jewel-toned and shines in the glass. A swirl in the glass gives numerous thin, but slow legs.
Nose: Initially the nose was a little shallow and closed. I was just getting sweet red fruit and oak.
Taste: Right after opening, the flavor was pleasant and mysterious. I liked it, but it was hard for me to pinpoint the individual flavors. I was just thinking, “slightly tart, red fruit”.
I left the wine in a wide-mouthed glass for 20 minutes while I put together a cold duck salad dressed with an apple balsamic vinaigrette. Returning to the wine, I noticed that the nose had opened up beautifully.
Nose: Hints of red plums, wild strawberries, lingonberry, and sour cherry. There were notes of leather, oak, and just briefly a whisper of buttery vanilla.
Taste: Tart red fruits like currents, lingonberry, wild strawberry, and cranberry. Mid palette offered spice, like peppercorn and mace. The finish was bright and clean, the way lemon zest brightens a meal.
It was absolutely perfect with the duck. The duck fat softened the wine, and the wine cleansed my palate between bites of rich Peking duck. I drank half the bottle before I realized I needed to save some to try the next day!
Day Two the wine had softened considerably. It was less tart, but the red berries and spice were still the predominant flavors. I really like how light this red wine is. It isn’t heavy or cloying the way a hearty Cabernet or Zinfandel often is. Its style reminds me of an old world Pinot Noir. I had my last two glasses with a tabbouleh salad and feta cheese. Maybe not the most inspired pairing, but it actually worked well. It was a nice, light dinner with a delicious glass of wine.
I’ll definitely be picking up a case of this wine. It’s unique and very enjoyable, and at Case Mates price, it can’t be beat.
Good morning from the West Coast everyone! I’m Elizabeth, the General Manager at Brick Barn, and will be on here today answering any questions you may have. These wines are wonderful and a great expression of our little pocket of Santa Ynez Valley, which is just next door to Sta. Rita Hills. It’s a little warmer and a little less foggy than our more well known neighbor. I hope you pick up the 3 pack to try our wines and for those who like no risk and a lot of reward, get the case! Happy Thanksgiving!
I’d estimated 1/4-1/3 of my collection is Grenache or G blend. I’ve snapped up every Grenachista offering, and am heavy with both CdP and Aussie GSM.
Pop and pour, And nothing jumped out to me. Very light Ruby color. Nose is reserved, not picking up any of the usual I’d expect.
Tight tannins
Medium acidity
After sometime I can get a hints or cherry and bramble, and some spice. But really not much there
Worked well with leftover pepperoni pizza. Finishes HOT if not paired with rich food. Besides being hot, it’s not offensive. If I closed my eyes I could maybe think it’s a Tavel rose.
@KingKoopa . i’d love to talk to you about Grenache sometime. I am planning a tasting.(Six blind and others in the pre-taste) for our local Winelovers group. If you’re willing, how can we do this?
This our winemaker Adrian Bolshoi at lunch with a glass of 2021 Rhône Blend, roasted duck and potatoes! Every day Adrian, Kristen (the Dir. of Hospitality) and I make lunch together. Brick Barn is our home away from home and eating together is the perfect time to come together, take a break from the day and Adrian always has a joke to make us laugh. Every Friday, lunch gets bigger as we make lunch for the entire staff. The 2021 Rhône Blend is our favorite go-to lunch wine because it pairs with everything. Medium bodied, full of fruit and a little caramel toastiness on the finish is just tastes so right. Cheers everyone!
