A wine with a beautiful dark ruby red color with violet highlights. Outstanding fruit, with a nose full of red berries, black cherry, black pepper, and hints of violets. Those elements come through on the palate, with fresh black and red fruit, revealing a full-bodied wine.
Viticulture
Our 60-acre estate Fundo Santa Cruz de Coya is the Eastern-most vineyard and one of the highest in Chile located at 3,280 feet above sea level. As a family winery, we have implemented manual harvesting and organic cultivation since our first harvest in 1990.
Vinification
From our organic vineyards, these grapes are carefully harvested by hand, gently pressed, and then fermented in 2,500-liter stainless steel tanks. Then aged in 225-liter French Oak barrels from the Allier and Tronçais forests for 26 months.
Calyptra is a boutique winery with a history of more than 30 years. Our vineyards are in Alto Cachapoal, being the only vineyard located in the valley drawer. We have a unique terroir: terraced vineyards between the foothills of the Andes and the Cachapoal River, at almost 1,000 meters above sea level. The characteristics of the field turn out to be optimal for the production of first-level wines. Therefore, Calyptra’s philosophy is to produce unique, authentic, honest wines that reflect the soil, the origin, and the dedication and passion of the entire team at our vineyard.

2014 Calyptra Vivendo Reserva Assemblage - $75 = 37.49%
Well Enthusiast had this to say:
An earthy nose is loaded with aromas of prune and raisin along with black-cherry and dark plum notes. A solid palate is clampy, while this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah feels saturated but jammy. Oaky blackberry and prune flavors finish plump, with a jolt of tartaric acidity. MS 10/1/18
Wine Enthusiast also notes a 15.5 abv
A retail site in Brazil says nose of red fruits, black cherry, black pepper, violet. Nose intense ruby. Taste pleasant acidity, present tannins, medium to full body.
This site also notes 15.5 and a mix of Syrah (59%), Merlot (30.8%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10.2%)
Maybe a little issue with that $40 msrp claim in this offering. Wine Enthusiast noted a $19 msrp. And this wine, albeit the 2017 version is indeed for sale on the producer website for 12,900 Chilean pesos which is $16.28 US. Yes, there is a cost involved on getting the wine stateside, however…
On Vivino the avg price paid is listed as $8.36. I am not saying you should always trust their reviews, but I have found their pricing to be informative.
@Eron if that is built the same way as the cellar tracker version then it needs to come with a big grain of salt. It’s a useful data point in both cases - I also look at the stores it came from in CT because if it’s all from, say, WTSO then it’s different than from Chambers Street wine.
@FritzCat@gtcharlie@Winedavid49 I agree. Very strange. I read the rat reports, especially when I have no room. I love the winery participation. It sometimes pushes me over the edge and makes this site unique over the others.
@danandlisa@FritzCat@gtcharlie@Winedavid49
I concur. No lab rat reports, no winery participation, and no past history here make it difficult to jump “off the fence.” As simple as it sounds, a lab rat or two can honestly go a long way towards giving people some piece of mind.
@danandlisa@FritzCat@gtcharlie@kawichris650
all fair criticisms. we strive to get both labrats and winery participation with every offer. there’s a fair bit of “cat herding” at times and it doesn’t always play out as expected. i agree both of these attributes are distinguishing point of Casemates. Glad you agree.
@danandlisa@FritzCat@kawichris650@Winedavid49
Understood. If anything just expressing a general frustration which is mostly based on how I have come to rely on this wine site and the community it has developed for purchasing wine I can enjoy. Especially when a wine comes up which looks interesting and I haven’t experienced before.

Looks like a blend I’d probably enjoy, but would like to see some rattage.

Would really love to hear from some rats.
One of the more disappointing offers I would say. Strange pricing numbers, no rats, no previous history. No purchase.
@gtcharlie And it might even be a good wine.

Likewise! It’s a task I don’t take lightly… but someone’s gotta do it!

will keep trying.
thanks for the feedback.
@FritzCat @gtcharlie @kawichris650 @Winedavid49 David, we are spoiled with this site and the participation/lab rat bottles.
