The robe is red ruby, revealing beautiful wild berry aromas on the nose. The palate is clean, smooth-textured, and fruit-forward. An easy Bordeaux, ready to drink now.
Elaboration
Berries are harvested during September at perfect maturity. The first sorting is done in the vineyard and the second one when the grapes arrive at the winery. Château Haut Jonset Bordeaux Rouge is aged in stainless steel temperature-controlled vats to reveal the all-crisp red fruit aromas the Merlot can express.
The superb south-facing clay-limestone terroir is given full expression in a 100% Merlot blend.

Winery: Château Haut Jonset
Owners: Patrick Gresta & family
Location: Southwestern France
Château Haut Jonset is owned by winemaker Patrick Gresta and his family. It lies in the heart of the undulating hills of the Entre-DeuxMers region of southwestern France. Good vintage (are there bad vintages anymore?), merlot did well in the area according to the pro tongues, particularly in the clay-limestone, location approx 25 miles east of Bordeaux, mechanical harvest, seriously doubt this is released at $300/case particularly with no oak but hey…probably a good drink for the $$
Got an e-mail from Alice that I had a bottle on the way on Monday, but the shipment got delayed somewhere in route. It did arrive today, and I just opened it after I got home from work. I’ll have a glass and let it rest for a bit and then load up my report sometime this evening. I’m liking the first few sips!
On the nose I get tobacco, leather and plums and dark cherry. It’s a very nice deep burgundy in the glass. (My girlfriend said “Oh, buttery” when she poured a glass and said her first whiff was buttered toast)
On the first sip I get dark cherries, raspberry and plums and maybe a hint of dark chocolate with the leather and tobacco notes. It’s not as fruit forward as a lot of the cheaper merlot’s I’ve been getting, which I don’t mind at all. It’s got a clean, dry finish with a with just a bit of tannins. As I finish drinking the first pour it is already opening up a bit and I am getting a bit more berry…blackberries and black raspberries with the dark cherries and plum.
The second glass has opened up a bit after sitting. Still getting nice tobacco and leather with the nice fruits in the background. It is sightly more layered and complex, but not by a lot. It is finishing a bit more dry with a tiny bit more tannins than the first half glass. It has a thinner mouthfeel than I am used to, but I don’t know if that’s because it is different, or I have just been drinking the wrong merlots!
Overall, I am finding it to be easy drinking if a little bit lighter than most merlots I drink. It is tasty and I am definitely looking at grabbing a case, especially at this price point!
Very late rat, but here I am. I haven’t ordered anything since moving so this went to my old house and had to be redirected.
Anyways on to the wine. Fairly non descript bottle, trying to appear as an established, classy Bordeaux. Back of the bottle identifies it as a “100% merlot blend” from the Entre deux mers region.
Mostly an opaque cherry red in the glass, long skinny legs. Not much on the nose, just red fruit. Perhaps a bit of tar/petrol. Pretty tight tannins, smooth red fruit, a bit syrupy and a bitter aftertaste. The wine coats the tongue and stays on it, but it isnt a pleasant taste that if like to hold onto. Overall the wine isn’t particularly hard to drink, and many average wine drinkers would probably find it enjoyable, however I’ve had much better $10 Bordeaux and I wouldn’t stick this any higher than a high quality boxed wine.
Sorry, I’d love to say this is excellent QPR but for me it just isn’t.
Note that this did travel to Houston and rode around in a UPS truck for two days in near 100 degree weather, with no time to settle, but doesn’t taste off to me or heat damaged.
@deadlyapp update after being open a couple hours. Its smoothed out, no lingering aftertaste, but its just straightforward red fruit. A very easy quaffer now but not sure how my head would feel tomorrow.

Morning friends. I think I have a rat bottle sitting at UPS that I will be picking up today, will report back this evening.
@deadlyapp Thanks!

It’s a Bordeaux, so I’m in.
