It is not ALL about the bass…it is ALL about the varietal. Chardonnay that tastes like…Chardonnay. Cabernet that tastes like the Cabernet grapes in the vineyard. All about… the flavor - sounds more like it.
2016 Circadia Cabernet Sauvignon
The Journey IS the Reward
Everything about these wines is a celebration of our journey. Our journey as vintners and our journey as people. We want to make wine that you drink along the way to celebrate life’s little moments – a setting sun, a clean dog, an empty inbox, unexpected rain.
Tasting Notes
The Circadia California Cabernet Sauvignon is an alluring wine, with seductive dark fruit flavors, medium body and exquisite, soft texture. A wine of great intensity, yet with a timeless sense of elegance. This wine has been carefully aged in our cellars and is ready to grace your table.
Winemaking Notes
Each dot on the label is a geographic point on a map that is meaningful to the making of this wine….A special vineyard, hometown or favorite hike. We hope you will add your own favorite spots and remember to celebrate them.
This Cabernet is made from a blend of fruit from Lodi, Lake County and Napa. It is aged in a combination of stainless steel and used French Oak to preserve the wonderful fruit characteristics.
It started 20 years ago with an opportunity to work for a craft brewer in Western Australia. Showing up in Australia with a degree from the University of California, a good work ethic and a “can do” spirit was the perfect combination of right place-right time. After three years down under, Kat moved back to the US and her husband, Australian Rob McDonald quickly followed.
They founded Old Bridge Cellars and began importing the legendary Australian wines they both loved…d’Arenberg, Jasper Hill, Yarra Yaring, Leeuwin Estate. Along the way, Kat took a break and went to law school, they planted vineyards in both Australia and the Napa Valley and began making their own wines including the eponymous named Mak.
In 2008, they founded Art+Farm Wine in Napa. Art+Farm is home to their single vineyard wines the girls in the vineyard, their outrageous blends-The Messenger and their true varietals: Circadia.
Kat and Rob live in Napa with their two children and an odd looking creature that is supposed to be a dog. Kat is a little obsessed with her heritage breed chickens and the eggs they lay and also her bees. Rob is obsessed with compost and growing the perfect tomato. Both are huge proponents of dry farming and see water as the single biggest factor in the future of agriculture.

Hi! I’m Sara from Art+Farm Wine. I’m sipping on a glass of Circadia after putting the kids to bed and am loving those dark fruit notes tonight giving me a little brandy feel. Let me know if you have any questions about the wine or winery!
@klezman@pmarin We used to own vineyards but do not any more.
About 90% of that wine we made ourselves. Bought a small lot of fun stuff from a friend because it worked really well in the wine.
Mostly CA, no particular AVA. About 20% Lake and 10% Napa.
@rjquillin from memory the RS is 3 grams per liter. Certainly no more than 5. 5 is generally where people start to detect sweetness although it depends a lot on acidity. So the short answer, is that if you’re looking for a sweet Red, the Circadia isn’t it.
@ArtFarmWine@rjquillin Not having tasted this, but from the rat reports and the descriptions (even the label description says words that hint that way “seductive strong fruit flavor,” I suspect it’s the blend that went into this, which perhaps is largely Lodi (was mentioned in a description) or central valley in general, which I associate with that intensity. Not that it’s bad, as mentioned in reports that’s actually what some people look for. And yet it can have that feeling without actually being even moderately “sweet” on the RS Scale.
@pmarin@rjquillin I see what you’re saying. Fruit forward and soft tannins often make people perceive a sweetness in the wine. Some love it, some don’t. To each their own!
Thank you Alice, Casemates, and Art + Farm wine. We have the privilege and honor of being a Lab Rats. It was a noisy day at the house. We are getting a new roof and concreting our driveway, so today was all about noise. Our pets did not appreciate the commotion to put it mildly. I did not realize our smooth collie had such a vocal range. This bottle was a very welcome respite. Upon opening, the nose was closed off. The first taste reminded me of a cherry jolly rancher, the long ones, that are not made anymore. The second taste was boysenberries. The remaining taste was fennel/black licorice. It had a lot of berry notes, dry, but not puckering, and not a long finish. It has great color and good legs, but reminded me of a Pinot in the finish instead of a Cab. We have saved 1/2 for tomorrow. I will update my notes. We think this could use more time in the cellar. Our dinner was grilled cheeseburgers with roasted poblano peppers, and yellow watermelon. The wine’s savory note, a.k.a. fennel, came out with the hamburger and the poblanos. The boysenberries came out with the watermelon and heirloom tomatoes.
I am sorry to say that this wine did not improve on the second day. The smell was improved, but the flavor was actually sharper and not as good as the first day.
What a wonderful sight in my inbox - an email from Alice!
The box came at the same time as my case of Chard from Iron Horse (Thanks for that one!) - opened the box, a little warm, fortunately I had time to put in the cellar overnight.
Opened yesterday afternoon with a group of eager neighborhood tasters.
Pop N Pour - a little closed but still you got a sense right away this was going to have a lot of fruit. As it opened the dark fruit takes center stage - and there is a lot of it. Notes of plum, some vanilla, some baking spice all present.
A dark purple in glass (think plum) with long thick legs (see fruit above).
First taste really congruent with nose and in glass presence - a ton of fruit - I won’t use the word sweet here as I view it somewhat blasphemous in the wine world but all of our neighbors described it that way
As it opened over time the fruit and spices evolved but nobody was able to get past the amount of fruit in this. There were 4 of us and we couldn’t finish the bottle
keep in mind this is a group of neighbors that loves fruit and jam (think freakshow / zin type blends).
I wanted to love this - largely because I love this community but alas, it was not to be.
I’d say this: if you have friends that come over that don’t usually love wine they might love this - think what a Goldeneye Pinot Noir is to Pinot Noir - it’s juice.
Alice, thank you as always for the opportunity! Apologies I couldn’t be more of a raving fan.
Nothing to do with this wine so just another useless comment…The prior Old Bridge Cellars connection brings back some fun memories…office is an old house with a garage in back that was converted into a little guest house, it was called The Box. Or at least that’s what I called it. Stayed there more than a few times in my retail wine shop play days.

I was firmly convinced this was cicada wine from ant and farm until I read the title more closely. The brood X invasion must still be fresh in my mind. We had ants invade this summer, too.

@ArtFarmWine what’s your role with the winery?
@ArtFarmWine @klezman Any % breakdown on the regions mentioned in the write-up, and are they winery owned, contracted, or purchased « juice »?
@klezman I work as an assistant winemaker, but as such a small family winery that includes all sorts of jobs beyond just helping to make the wines
@klezman @pmarin We used to own vineyards but do not any more.

@ArtFarmWine given the Rat comments, I’m curious as to the RS on this.

@ArtFarmWine Love this wine = perfect +++ berries
@ArtFarmWine @pmarin @rjquillin not too sweet - berries and perfection -
@conesville thank you! We love those seductive dark fruit flavors too! Glad you’re loving it!
Should I feel silly that I first read it as Ant+Farm?
@pmarin If you do feel silly, then you are not alone. I thought it was Ant+Farm too. Kerning matters.
@pmarin silly isn’t always a bad thing, right?
@pmarin But is it an Alien Ant+Farm?
@halwarning Adam Ant+Farm?

@pmarin no sillier than I do for thinking it was Cicada Cabernet at first.
@sandbarhappy …Cicada Cabernet might be good with food on the Grill-o.
@pmarin Groan…

@danandlisa @rjquillin ok Ron, work your “label magic”
@kitkat34 @rjquillin
You want to see him pull a
rabbitrat out of a hat?@kawichris650 @rjquillin after he gets some sleep, of course
@kawichris650 @kitkat34 It was an early evening after a long and late day.
@kawichris650 @kitkat34 @rjquillin I’d be good for a rabbit too!
@bunnymasseuse
Here ya go Rabbit Ranch
Or better yet…wait…sold out???
@smtcapecod I call the wine I drink bunny juice but no one believes it

Ok, back to this offer
@cduan this is a DC only offer in our area, any interest on your part?
@bunnymasseuse we’re pretty fully stocked after the last few purchases, but if there’s enough interest, happy to be the wine mule for others!
