Made from Grenache grapes in the classic Provençale style, the 2021 Rosé of Grenache presents a pale flamingo-apricot hue and a fragrant, floral nose. Aromas of freshly sliced peaches, hibiscus, and hyacinth reveal accents of nectarine and orange zest. Hints of honeysuckle, orange blossom, crushed rose petal, and pineapple round out the enticing bouquet. The palate is exceptionally clean and refreshing, with flavors of peach, mango, apricot, and honeydew melon accompanied by notes of lemon chiffon, apricot, papaya, and kiwi. A long, luxuriant finish lingers with juicy essences of peach, strawberry, and cherry.
The Vintage
DAOU Discovery Collection wines represent our passion for approachable luxury. Winemaker Daniel Daou has cultivated deep connections with select Paso Robles growers for numerous vintages, allowing him to maintain absolute quality and consistency. The 2021 growing season was preceded by a dry winter, with only one large storm system that provided considerable rainfall in February. A period of light rain in July also replenished the soil with much-needed moisture. While the summer season was marked by periodic heat waves, the weather cooled down by mid-August and remained that way through harvest. This cooling trend allowed the fruit to enjoy exceptional hang time. In the end, low yields and small berries provided wines with fine balance and vivid varietal flavors.

Family-owned and operated, DAOU Family Estates is committed to producing collectible, world-class wines to rival the most respected appellations in the world. Situated on a 212-acre hilltop Estate in the Adelaida District of Paso Robles, our remarkable geology, favorable microclimate, and high elevation were once described by renowned California winemaker, André Tchelistcheff, as “a jewel of ecological elements.” As stewards of this beautiful terroir, DAOU’s goal is to make unique fine wines that honestly and accurately reflect the potential of the Estate and to craft Bordeaux-style wines that combine Old World tradition with New World techniques.
As young men, brothers Georges and Daniel Daou shared the same dream: to live a life in wine. Their dream prevailed years later when they discovered what would become known as DAOU Mountain, an untapped world-class terroir in the Adelaida District of Paso Robles.
Ever since, they have poured their souls into creating some of California’s most noteworthy wines while cultivating a guest experience to match. In the end, DAOU is about family - and the truth that nothing brings people together like wine.

2021 DAOU Discovery Collection Rosé - $40 = 24.23%
This was a very pleasant wine. Upon opening it was a peachy orange color with aromas of the same. A little flowery on the nose as well. Taste was largely the same as the nose with a dose of strawberry for good measure.
Night one, my wife and I both agreed this is an all around pleasing rose.
Night two, it was somehow more astringent with a notable alcohol burn that was not present on day one.
Day three, no more burn and very mellow. I’m not sure how that corelates to aging potential but I would recommend this to anyone looking for a crowd pleasing rose.
Wow - what a very pleasant surprise this wine was!
Received the bottle a few days ago which allowed time to lay it down and pass off any bottle shock. The first thing to note was the beautiful bottle. I’m typically a little suspicious of wines that have a lot of emphasis on the bottle and/or packaging, but this is an elegant bottle that highlights the soft pink juice inside. Bottle had a real cork that pulled easily.
Upon first pour, the wine’s color really struck me. We all agreed that the wine had a little warmer hue than a typical rose. The fruit on the nose also came through immediately, with pear being the most pronounced. First taste reaffirmed that with pear and strawberry being the most apparent notes on the palate with a surprisingly long finish that had a little lemon citrus. We all also agreed that the wine was not as dry as we were anticipating. Certainly not sweet, but far from the typical dry roses made famous in Provence.
We served the wine with pan seared scallops and large prawns. It was a really beautiful pairing with the wine perfectly complimenting the sweet and salty scallops. As the wine continued to warm up, more of the lemon came through which really matched up nicely with the seafood.
I reserved a small pour to try last night, 24 hours later. The wine hadn’t evolved much but I would say that the strawberry notes has fallen off a bit. The wine tasted a bit drier and the alcohol was a little more pronounced on the finish. Perfectly enjoyable still, but I think this wine (like most roses) is best enjoyed almost immediately after pulling the cork; I don’t any benefit from having a day to open.
All in all, a really delicious rose that I would recommend. I’d never seen this wine before but am familiar with Daou Cabernets and have always enjoyed those. This feels like a more premium offering like a Whispering Angel. Good quality wine in a beautiful bottle that would be perfect for a Sunday seafood patio lunch this spring or summer.
@DanFielding Dan I can attest that it will not fit in that rack, however, I find this rosé so delicious that I have learned to overlook that problem! I do find the bottle interesting I love the shape of it despite its rack shortfalls
Enthusiast:
91 Points.This wine is a shade of cantaloupe, and that fruit shows on the nose of this bottling alongside ripe apple and bubblegum aromas. There’s a firm tension to the palate, where melon flavors are cut by wet stone elements. MK 8/1/22
And lets not leave Mr. Wong out:
91 Points. The 2021 DAOU Discovery Collection Rosé is stylish and made in the Provençale style. TASTING NOTES: This wine shines with aromas and flavors of mineral notes, tart raspberries, and savory spices. Enjoy it with fresh, raw salmon and avocado rolls. (Tasted: September 17, 2022, San Francisco, CA)
WineO Mark not as enthusiastic at 90 Points:
Paso Robles not known for their Rose. And Daou winery is known for their superb Cab. But surprisingly, their Rose wine is just as good and it can fool you as a classic French Rose.
A pale yellowish-pink color on the glass. This wine has a lovely fruity aroma of cherries, fresh strawberries, peaches, melons, and watermelons with notes of lemon zest, honey, and some minerals.
This is a light to medium-bodied wine that’s refreshing, fresh, and bright. It has a smooth and creamy texture that’s flavorful, crisp, and clean. The palate confirms what’s on the nose with fruits of strawberries, cherries, watermelons, apples, and peaches. This is followed by hints of papaya, citrus zest, and minerals creating a clean and lingering finish.
@CorTot your CT says otherwise. If you’re like me this wine won me over. I wasn’t a fan of the first bottle. This is a great price and makes a great gift too boot
@Pmknkatie and sorry - not trying to be snarky but ‘central coast’ is such a large area that it does not have any meaning anymore. I prefer to get a little more specific . . .
@Pmknkatie but…. The climate, soil and wines produced in Paso are markedly different than cooler parts of SLO and these are markedly different than Santa Barbara County. Did you know that the ‘Central Coast’ AVA stretches from the San Pablo Bay in SF all the way to Ventura and includes Monterey County too? It’s too big and minimizes the sub regions included. Again not to be snarky but might as well just say California instead
This was a delicious Rose and by far our favorite of the Summer. Very aromatic and big mouth filling flavors. Huge crowdpleaser that always elicited guest commentary. The bottle design is gorgeous, but as previously mentioned…not practical. It will not fit in a wine rack or even in open case racking (the bottles are unable to balance on top of each other). Really torn on this offer because we loved the juice, but the bottle was really infuriating…
Any guesses on how long this could “cellar” (dark closet @ ~75 degrees). Might take me a few years to get through the case; my wife goes through Rosé-pangs a few times each year.
@knotworking I’m always curious about that also. It’s not that I need all my whites and rosés to last a long time; I’m typically going to drink them soon. But sometimes my wine stash gets a little big, and it’s nice to know which ones are better to drink soon and which I can leave as a reserve.
@knotworking Most rosès are meant to be consumed in a year or two, so that works against you. If it were a tannic red with good acidity, I’d bet the 75° closet would be fine for a few years.
I never understand why my state, (IL) is not included to ship to, especially in this case when the Walmart down the street has this same wine in stock.
@ellen3kay The winery must have a direct to consumer license for your state. That same winery can sell through the 3 tier system to a distributor and end up at a local retailer.
Gruet is a perfect example for me. Doesn’t ship here but is ubiquitous in local stores.

@InFrom i do have 3 bottles waiting for you from the prior offering of the 2020 vintage.
@irenegade Lol I completely forgot about that!
@InFrom I can take a few bottles if you need.
@InVinoVeritas Thanks. I may dial back my interest in this vintage, depending on how accessible my share of last year’s offer turns out to be.
@InFrom I’m overstocked in general and need to sit this one out, sorry.
@InFrom Queens, NY?
@coldestcore Yep, that Queens.

Sounds like a great deal, but will that bottle fit in a standard wine rack? This photo makes it seem too wide.
@DanFielding Dan I can attest that it will not fit in that rack, however, I find this rosé so delicious that I have learned to overlook that problem! I do find the bottle interesting I love the shape of it despite its rack shortfalls

fwiw
we worked through the whole case of the last offer, its lovely juice. However the damn bottles don’t fit in any wine rack i’ve ever seen.

It fits in the fridge!
Buy, drink, repeat.

I want this, but that it won’t fit in a bourdeaux wine rack is a dealbreaker. Out.

I’m a sucker for rose and wines from the California central coast area
@Pmknkatie you mean Paso?
@tercerowines
FWIW I love that you contribute regularly on other offers. Thank you for being an active winemaker in this community!
@pseudogourmet98 it’s the way the community used to be - and the way it SHOULD be. Period. Cheers!
@Pmknkatie and sorry - not trying to be snarky but ‘central coast’ is such a large area that it does not have any meaning anymore. I prefer to get a little more specific . . .
@tercerowines sure! Paso and SLO and that general area

@Pmknkatie @tercerowines soap boxes and all that
But yeah, central coast means very little.
This sounds yummy and I’m a sucker for fancy bottles. In for 4, since I don’t have room for more.

@83fxwg leave them in the box and tuck away in a closet
@losthighwayz putting it in a closet defeats the purpose of a wine celler
Any guesses on how long this could “cellar” (dark closet @ ~75 degrees). Might take me a few years to get through the case; my wife goes through Rosé-pangs a few times each year.
