Double Gold ~ Denver International Wine Competition
Tasting Notes
A bright jeweled garnet in the glass, this Pinot Noir offers up subtle ripe red fruit aromas, gently scented by hints of violets and earth tones. On the palate, red currant flavors flow into a supple, vibrant mid-palate accented by brighter tangerine peel. Elegant, integrated tannins and lovely structure highlight the lingering finish.

The 2013 vintage brings together beautiful Pinot character, hints of cherry, seedy raspberry, violets, and earthy, herbal notes. Balanced and fresh - this win is food friendly, with an earthiness that pairs well with mushrooms, sausage, salmon, and duck.

2014 De Novo Pinot Noir, Anderson Valley Frattey Shams
As always, appreciate the opportunity to provide some insights to the wine, for all my casemates!
This was a last second request, as Alice didn’t get the wine until yesterday and I was informed just today that wine would be arrived. She graciously provided wine varietal so that I could attempt to plan some food to pair it with.
First of all, I have to say that I’m not generally a fan of pinot noir. That said, I’ve tried my best to be objective and describe the wine as I can, but without the benefit of quite so much experience as with other varietals.
The bottle showed up at about 2 pm, and we popped it open at dinner around 6. Was a bit surprised to note that it was a 2014 vintage.
The wine is a bright, ruby red. Does not appear to be overly affected by the 2014! vintage.
Upon initial swirl and sniff, I got some bright cherry and something almost smoky, which was interesting.
First sip was light to medium body, significant tannin that I wasn’t expecting, dirt, mushroom, and sour cherry. Decent acidity on the finish.
After about 15 minutes in the large burgundy glass, the nose almost disappeared completely. On the palate, the tannins retreated quite a bit, some bramble, and the earthy funkiness grew. There was very little in the way of any fruit I could define. The wine went pretty well with the very cheesy, baked pasta in white cream sauce. I did not find that it went well with the dark chocolate cookies for desert, but the wife disagreed.
Overall, I was impressed with the wine, given the vintage. It seemed to be a well crafted, aged pinot noir. Not necessarily to my taste, but certainly quality.
And the minimalist view from Her Honor, michelleshari: There was a strong smell upon pop and pour. It’s fine. Earthy. I’m not the biggest pinot fan but. I finished my glass. Which i don’t always do for any wine. If you like pinot noir, this is probably a good one. I’ll keep my de novo to reviews on appeal.
@jasisk@kaolis@klezman@Mark_L@rjquillin Given the comment was right after describing the color i think he was saying there wasn’t any bricking and that meant the wine was still youthful given the vintage. Hopeing for at least 1 more rat!!
I got an email yesterday letting me know I would be a lab rat for today’s offering. Very last minute but I can always find an excuse to open a bottle of wine on a weeknight. Luckily I was able to track down the UPS driver in my neighborhood as I just missed him ringing the doorbell.
Upon opening the Russian River Valley Pinot Noir I saw that it was a 2014 and wondered how that would translate as most of the PN that I drink are much younger. I poured my first glass of wine and the smell was citrusy but subdued. It was slightly darker than I expected, being that it has aged quite a bit.
Upon first taste I noticed that the wine was very smooth and medium-bodied. I couldn’t make out too much of the citrus I smelled but it did have an earthy and slightly dryer taste to it. My first thought is this wine is ready to drink now and would be a safe pinot noir to serve with any meal. This beats many of the value wines you can find under $15 if going for the case price. I typically drink medium and heavy reds but my wife is a fan of Pinots. I will be making her taste the wine later today and report back with her thoughts for those on the fence for a last minute purchase.
@blublocker sorry that I didn’t have an extra day to drink this but Day 2 was much more pleasant than day 1. It opened up and I could taste the citrus I smelled when I first opened the bottle. This is a wine that needs to open up before drinking. Went from a decent Pinot to a very good one.

De Novo Mixed Pinot Noirs - $65 = 27.07%
Thanks Alice and Casemates for the chance to be a Labrat! I love a Pinot noir so when I opened the box and spied a 2013 De Novo Pinot Noir, I was excited to try.
First smell and sip definitely showed this is more to my husband’s taste so I brought him along for the ride.
Day 1:
Nose: cherry, turpentine, mint, menthol
First sip impressions steel, bright fruit (definitely cherry), clay
Sour Cherry syrup
Later peach iced tea
Green Apple aftertaste
Some spice and earth
Light to medium body. Acidic. Almost no after taste. Thinner than I typically like my pinot noir but I felt like this could open up on day 2.
Day 2 quick notes:
It did open! But still no major finish (which is probably my favorite part of drinking wine).
More chalk than clay
kiwi flavor
Green grape
Raspberry
Orange/lime peel
Dry aftertaste
Smooth
Cherry Jolly rancher
Cough syrup
Almost tobacco on the nose, or chocolate cigar
Looking, price seems fair and I’d say this is a good daily drinker. Certainly easy to drink. Went well with ham. And some snacks (peanut butter pretzels, cheese). But didn’t necessarily taste better with the snacks. Hubby would definitely drink this regularly. I may stick to more layered, brambly, earthy Pinots with a heavy finish. (Sorry for the late post- got the email last minute. But always happy to share with the community!)

@jasisk
curious as to the ‘given the vintage’ comment?
@jasisk @rjquillin That caught my eye too.
And did I miss a memo about a judgeship in there somewhere?
@jasisk @klezman @rjquillin 2014 solid vintage no?
@jasisk @kaolis @klezman @rjquillin I took the comment as “the wine being 9 years old, which is older than most wines are upon release”.
@jasisk @kaolis @klezman @Mark_L @rjquillin Given the comment was right after describing the color i think he was saying there wasn’t any bricking and that meant the wine was still youthful given the vintage. Hopeing for at least 1 more rat!!
@rjquillin just meant that it’s 10 year old wine. Still appeared youthful.
@jasisk @kaolis @klezman @rjquillin @StingingJ
The comment is at the beginning of the next-to-last paragraph:
@kaolis @klezman @Mark_L @rjquillin @StingingJ I suppose I should have said “given the age”.
@jasisk @kaolis @klezman @Mark_L @StingingJ
Bright side; you know you are being read!
For a well structured PN, 10 years could put it in a nice place. Likely it was released quite some time ago.
