The main grape in Chianti Classico is Sangiovese. Our 100% Sangiovese has the appearance, aromas and flavors of Chianti Classico. It is a clear red wine, reddish in color, not purple, of medium intensity. On the nose, are notes of cherry and strawberries with raspberry overtones. At the mid-pallet, these same fruit flavors are intensified along with flavors of earth and leather. It is dry with a crispness that comes from a good amount of acidity, all of which makes it an excellent choice to accompany lighter dinners such as roast chicken, chicken sotto mattone, pork loin, cheese and rich hearty pasta. The finish is quite pleasant.
Winemaking
In the Cellar: 5 day cold soak. Active fermentation 5 days.
Fermentations and aging: Aged in new and 2 year old french oak barrels.
Farming conditions: These grapes are organically grown and dry farmed on soils of rocky, medium clay. It is the dry farming that brings intensity to this beautiful wine.

Tasting Notes
Initial aromas of dried cherry develop into more complex offerings of raspberry, leather, dried rose petals, figs, almonds and cocoa. Rich and dry in the mouth — sweet and authoritative, a good match for ham, sausage or biscotti.

Tasting Notes
The bouquet offers bold fruit; rich ripe blackberries and raspberries plus violets, black currant, plums, cherries, plus strawberry, cinnamon and nutmeg spice. On the palate, it is broad, deep, juicy, dripping blackberries and cherries. In the mid palate, this is a well balanced wine with chewy, full-bodied tannins and a lingering fruit finish. A great wine to pair with roasted vegetables and meats.

An award-winning, family-run winery in the heart of Dry Creek Valley. Our fascination with wine-grape growing began in South America, where we lived in Ecuador for 38 years, and continues today with our grape growing and wine making ventures in Sonoma County.
Our winemaking is a relatively recent venture. For over twenty years, we were primarily grape growers selling our premium grapes to some of the best wineries in Sonoma and Napa counties with whom we still have long standing relationships.
Though we no longer farm our own grapes, we continue to consult for the family that purchased our vineyard in Dry Creek Valley from which we continue to make our Cabernet Sauvignon and Sagrantino wines. We also maintain close contact with our farming colleagues in Sonoma County and Mendocino County where we source our other grapes. We are fortunate to work with our friend Larry Venturi at Venturi Family Vineyards in Mendocino. Larry grows our Sangiovese and Petite Sirah.
We continue to source excellent Zinfandel and Syrah grapes from small family owned vineyards that follow our high standards in growing grapes, using organic practices and supporting sustainability. These farming relationships ensure that our grapes will continue to produce award winning wines.

Yum!
I’m just finishing a bottle of the 2013 Sagrantino. While a few years ago it was a little disjointed, it has come into its own over the last 2 or so years. Nice acidity, not overly ripe despite the high alcohol (15.2%). Some earth, plums, and that nice acidity.
@klezman I really want to get this- I always enjoyed the few Denier-Handal wines on Woot, and still have 17 or so bottles of Wellington Denier-Handal Cab in the cellar. Nice to see David Noyes as a winemaker as well, miss his pinots. I am concerned about the high alcohol on all of these, as I usually try to buy lower alc, classically structured wines. I do enjoy Turley, though, and that’s always over 15%. Help!
@Doralice4Sangio definitely!
Nice to see you here. We met once at your house with a crew in the old woot days. An excellent time was had by all. Dick took us out to check the Zin, and I still remember the crazy variation of ripeness within a single cluster.
These 15% alcohol wines are not hot. Not to worry. They are very well balanced and as such the aromas and flavors are always well define and amply expressed. Much like with your Turley wines. They hold up very well over time. Actually they keep getting more delicious.
@Doralice4Sangio@rhandal
Definitely agree on the balance. It is possible to have 15% wines be balanced and without being hot. The '13 Sagrantino hits that mark for sure. I was quite surprised, actually, to see that abv when I looked.
Also agree on the ageing. I’m only starting to dig in to my 2012 and 2013 Zins that you produced and still have some 2010 Cabernet. All of which are doing very very well.
How do you decide when to pick and are you shooting for wines with a particular abv? I’m definitely not used to seeing Mendocino wines or Italian varieties with alcohols that high. Dry Creek Zin and Cab, on the other hand…
@Doralice4Sangio Welcome aboard what is generally a bit of Friday madness.
Tell us a bit more about yourselves and this offer.
Many here will be familiar with the D-H Cab Sauv Peter Wellington did great things with, along with David that worked with Peter, and we can’t forget Meeker, another long time favorite. Excellent pedigree to say the least.
@Doralice4Sangio@rjquillin Thank you. It’s great to be back among such good company. Yes, we’re definitely proud of our heritage. We’re sure you’ll be seeing more from us in the future.
@rjquillin We are certainly very proud that we have the support of Peter Wellington and David Noyes. David and Lucas Meeker contribute to making our wines premium and award winning.
@Doralice4Sangio
Looks like I’ve got some of the '13 Sag hanging around too I need to find, as well as an old Woot! offer of the '11 Family Selection.
Any idea how either of those may be doing, and if I need to find them anytime soon?
Found this as a whisper from @rhandal I think was meant for all.
Hopefully you’ll find them and enjoy them. We’re sure they are doing well. No rush. Our Sagrantino with it abundant soft tannins holds up well as do the Petite Sirah and the Syrah in the Family Selection.
@rhandal@rjquillin@Doralice4Sangio I recently had a 2009 Zin, 2010 Petite, and 2103 Sangio. All were really delicious and had developed lots of complexity from their youth. Great to see you guys here on casemates!
@Doralice4Sangio@rjquillin@trifecta We are proud to be back on Casemates. We too enjoy our wines with a few years of aging. You’re wise to maintain decent cellar. It let’s you enjoy wines more completely and correctly. Thanks for that.

Denier-Handal Mixed Italian Reds Case - $40 = 16.66%
2016 Denier-Handel Sagrantino
This is my first taste of this varietal. I am a new world red drinker, mostly Cabs and Pinot, but this past year I’ve been drinking whites and sparklers having dropping weight on low carbs and getting a headache from some big reds. Now I’m back to all wines!
Upon the pop at room temp (approx 69 degrees), beautiful deep garnet color, almost opaque. I’m a little stuffed up so I only detected alcohol and some bright red fruit on the nose. Long thin legs on the swirl.
On first couple of sips, alcohol and astringent, red fruit up front and a bit puckery. I think my tastebuds must be affected along with the stuffed up nose, so I can only say that the fruit is red berry. Some nicely meshed almost sweet tannin is revealed at mid-palate, with a full mouth feel, and short finish. The alcohol was a bit heady but I am tasting before and without any food.
About 20 minutes, the glass was revisited. Same characteristics as first taste, I’m detecting some spice, cinnamon, it is opening up nicely albeit still holding its acidic astringency. It’s less bright, like a darker berry. The alcohol has dissipated and coming together with the tannin. My mouth feels tingly, in a good way. I’m really liking this evolution. No discernible oak for me, however the finish has lengthened a bit.
I think this wine would pair very nicely with cheese, Charcuterie, and grilled meats. It would be enjoyable now and after a few years in the bottle. I totally enjoyed this first venture into this varietal, it is very different than a Sangiovese and was a welcomed surprise. It tastes finely crafted, and I can’t wait to see the retail and Casemates prices.
Revisited after 6 hours with the cork having been placed back on the bottle, glass sat for 30-45 minutes. My sinuses cleared a bit. Much more Berry fruit on the nose and on the palate. The alcohol and tannin balanced well, less astringent but still evident mid-palate. The berry lingered in the relatively brief finish. Matched well with Polish sausage, German meatcake, pierogies and potato pancakes. Not so well with the freshly made Polish pickle.
“”"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
I’m looking at the winery info now, and I’m a bit surprised with the 20% Cab, but being unfamiliar with Sagrantino, I am assuming it’s rounding out the dryness of the varietal? I believe this wine can be cellared for at 7-10 years, perhaps more, but drink some now before it goes to sleep! Thank you Alice and Casemates for the opportunity to sample this delightful wine! Looks like another excellent buy for CMers!
I took a look back and saw the blend is actually 14% Cab and 6% Falanghina, another varietal I am not familiar with! Now that this bottle has sat on the counter overnight, I’ll give it another taste this afternoon and report back!
@irenegade Falanghina is a white grape grown in the province of Campania (Naples and the Amalfi Coast). It’s floral notes complement the dark fruit flavors of the Sagrantino. The co-fermentation of white and red wine grapes also adds to the color stability of the wine over the years
@irenegade@rhandal The Falanghina is such a fun wine. Hopefully you’ll be able to bottle that again someday, assuming all those hipster wineries don’t buy it all up
Our bottle of Denier-Handal Sangiovese arrived on a cool and cloudy day is South Florida. I opened the box and immediately put it in our wine cooler. We were planning on a hearty homemade meat pizza for dinner.
We opened the bottle about twenty minutes before the pizza was ready to come off the stone. My first noticing was what I described as “cork dust” all throughout the neck of the bottle. After several minutes of cleaning out the neck we poured our first glass.
This wine is very light in both color and nose. We let it sit a little bit while we tended to our pizza. The first sip was also very light, and I was happy that I decided to pair it with pizza. It was a nice wine in the $15-$20 range. It is also a nice wine to just sit with cheese and crackers or a pizza. Personally, this wine is too light to pair up with anything heartier than appetizers or pizza.
@Doralice4Sangio Along these lines… can you suggest some cheese/food pairings for each of these wines? Something tells me you might be just the right person to make these recommendations
/vintner @trifecta Of course I can! Love to pair food and wine. I have found the Sangiovese works well with cheeses like Pt. Reyes Toma which offers up buttery notes and doesn’t overpower the wine. Also Bellwether Carmody or a similar semi soft like a Bel Paese. If you like Burrata and Prosciutto that is always a delicious combo with the Sangiovese. If you like salami I would lean towards Genoa salami or a white wine salami. If you like a bit headier salami Creminelli Wild Boar Salami paired with the wine and one of the cheeses above would make a great pairing. Margarita pizzas, or a veggie pizza or a mild sausage pizza would also work.
Sagrantino needs some more character rich foods. A duck ragu on spaghetti, eggplant parmiggiano, or pasta amatriciana would be delicious. Roasted lamb works well if you have the spices or mixed grill is also a good pairing. I find that I am looking for fat and richness to pair with the high acid in the wine. For cheese a more aged pecorino or other aged sheep cheeses. Fennel salami also works well with it.
The Family Blend is much lighter than our previous vintages due to the Sangiovese. That said, I grilled a rib eye and made a tomato salad, and roasted some asparagus. It went with everything even the asparagus which is always a tough pairing. For cheeses it works well with Piave, Parmiggiano, aged Goudas like Saenkanter or Old Amsterdam. If you like softer cheeses then it works with Harbison from Jasper Hill or a perfectly ripe buttery Taleggio. For salami or cured meats, definitely Coppa, prosciutto and wine infused salamis like Creminelli’s Barolo salami…now I am hungry!
@jml326@rhandal So I just sent a case to a un-aware friend in VA , going to break it to her in the morning she has a case coming with my name on it… let me know if you want part of it, will have to grovel later to find out my cost ; ) /giphy fittest-distracted-kitten

2017 Family Selection Red Blend
Pop n’ Pour; Grocery store big fruit red, syrah and zin?
Decanted for almost 2 hours:
Currant, American oak
mid-pallets, juicy dark berries, candied fruit
tannins, clears the palate. Worked very well with a pep’ pizza I made.
Could be a nice crowd pleasure for a party or BBQ. Easy non-offensive drinking, but lacking complexity to make you think or bring you back for more.
Estimate $15-18
Would buy at $10-12

@trifecta CT tells me I have a few bottles of the '11 Red Blend, purchased on w.woot in 2014. I’m gonna try to dig one out for this evening.
RATS! No Wisconsin
@sosptuba Wisconsin will be ready for the next sale. There was no time to get it for this month. Sorry.
