After trying the District 7 Sauvignon Blanc, I have a review that probably won’t surprise you: I enjoyed it.
It’s got what you expect, honeysuckle, green apple, citrus, and melon notes. It’s bright and tart in the mouth, and has a very boozy finish.
My tasting experince brought the citrus and melon in the front, green apple mid palate, and a green apple with a shot of vodka at the end.
Once I paired with food, I found that cheese and snacky stuff (nuts, crackers) was the best pairing as the richness of the aged gouda was a nice perpendicular to the tartness of the wine. It did pretty well with roast chicken (and the sides - salad and mac and cheese) as well. All that said, I enjoyed it the most on its own on a hot day after a long day at work.
I suggest this as a every day white quaffable for when you want a traditional sauv blanc at a decent price. It was a really nice change for me from the rose I normally sip (read: guzzle) this time of year.
@erisire Thank you for the kind review! The judges at the San Diego International Wine Competition also shared your delight with a 94-point wine score for our Sauvignon Blanc!

First time lab rat…Thank you for the opportunity!
After allowing the bottle to chill overnight, I began my job of tasting. Unfortunately, I am not a lover of Sauvignon Blanc, so I was already sure this was not going to be good! I unscrewed the top and poured a small glass, gave the beautiful pale lemon wine a swirl, inhaled the aromas of something that lifted my taste buds, so many different smells, fruit, citrus and something else but couldn’t quite decide. I took a small sip and was taken back how good this tasted, although on the dry side for me, still enjoyable. I think I taste passion fruit, but undecided as there seems to be many flavors. This wine really intrigued me as I am not a Sauvignon Blanc drinker, I am unfortunately one that likes an oaky chardonnay…I know, I hear the sighs, but it’s true!!
Day 2 – Same amazing aromas to the nose as yesterday, still so many amazing flavors. Reminds me a little of a German wine, not sure what flavor profile brings that out. I actually mixed this with a chardonnay, and it was amazing. I’m sure a big no, no, but this really added a brightness and flavor that I didn’t expect.
I will be buying a case.
As in previous vintages, our 2017 Sauvignon Blanc features fruit from cold-and warm-climate vineyard sites. This allows us to create a wine that is balanced, complex and absolutely delicious. The cold-climate lots impart dried herbs and brisk acidity. The warm-climate lots add melons, peaches, richness and viscosity.
Vintage and Winemaker Notes
California has 17 grape crush districts. Monterey County is District 7. Wine experts recognize our home as one of the most beautiful and diverse winegrowing regions in the world. The distinctive geography, climate and soils lead to wines that are complex, elegant and most importantly, delicious. District 7 is Monterey.
2017 was arguably the most “normal” growing seasons we’ve had in recent years. The winter was wet, the spring was mild and the bulk of the summer was clear and dry. Record-breaking heat in early September accelerated harvest, but in the end the fruit was ripe and flavorful with good acidity.
Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes were gently whole-cluster pressed, chilled, and racked clean to a refrigerated stainless steel tank. The juice was slowly fermented at a cool temperature to enhance the varietal aromatics. To preserve the bright fruit flavors and varietal character of our Sauv Blanc, we fermented and aged it entirely in stainless steel. This allows the wine’s crisp, zesty qualities and distinctive freshness to shine through.
Al Scheid first saw untapped potential in Monterey County in 1972 when the wine region was in its infancy. What started as a grape growing operation that sold 100% of its production to other wineries today has evolved into a grapes-to-glass family business that crafts authentic and elegant wines. Our Scheid Family Wines portfolio now includes five unique and distinctive labels: Scheid Vineyards, District 7, Metz Road, VDR and Stokes’ Ghost.
With 12 estate vineyards comprised of 4,000 acres located along a 70-mile spread of the Salinas Valley, the array of microclimates and soils give us an incredible selection to work with each vintage. While our wealth of vineyard resources is exceptional, it is our employees that are at the heart of everything we do. Much of our workforce has been with us for over 25 years, with several of our vineyard managers employed for over 40 years.
The Scheid family – Al, Scott, Heidi and long-time COO Kurt Gollnick – along with our dream team of employees, are passionate about crafting the best wine possible and honoring our commitment to be good stewards of the land and supporters of our local community. We are proud to produce authentic products that sit on your dinner table and invite conversation, connection and warmth.
