Dining out is an experience that involves many factors beyond just the type and quality of the food and wine. The food and wine and most important to me, and to many, but it’s not the whole story.
The setting, ambience, decor, service are all factors that affect a dining experience. Restaurants and chefs often seek to create a particular ambiance, some more formal than others. A sense of occasion, perhaps. When choosing a restaurant, I take this into account to plan the total experience for my companions and myself.
Dressing consistently with the experience a restaurant seeks to create is part of the experience. If I’m not in a mood to dress ‘up’, I choose a restaurant where that’s considered normal.
