I was really excited to Rat for this wine, as I know we don’t see a whole lot of “old world” offerings here on Casemates, especially the lesser known varietals like this lovely Fleurie. After giving the bottle a day to stabilize in the cellar, we decided to pair the bright and vibrant Beaujolais with a cheeseboard of soft and semi-soft delights from our beloved state of Wisconsin. The pairing was spot on and super enjoyable.
Upon PnP, the wine showed a lovely rich ruby color in the glass; very inviting and beautiful. Long gradients of color towards the edge of the glass, and strong legs that indicate a hefty ABV. Overall a very pretty wine, which sounds strange but is my best description
Not much initial aroma, wafty and thin again from the alcohol, but there was a bit of pepper and cardamom and muted red fruit. The aroma intensified over the next hour or so.
On the palette, the initial taste was still muted and certainly needed to breathe for an hour or so. The predominant notes were a spicy black pepper and just a tight wine that needed to relax, much like a ball of pasta dough that had just been rolled. There were faint sour cherry notes and some blackberries in there somewhere. Tannins were soft yet supportive right out of the bottle, and that never changed; right up my alley as the tannins were never distracting in any way and very well structured.
The magical “one hour later” was just the ticket. The spice of the Gamay was met with juicy sour cherries and a bit of rich blueberry, all with a a light top note of dried French Thyme. It was a really lovely wine that paired so well with our smooth and creamy cheese board, though I can’t think of many other food pairings that wouldn’t go well with it. I think this wine definitely has the backbone to age for another 5+ years

Look: Intense purple ink in the glass, with long legs Nose: Pomegranate, cherry pit, violet, vanilla oak, unripe blackberry, and some slate Taste: Dark berry juice and tart. Enough acidity to clear palate. Integrated tannins. Vanilla + oak + juice… Medium-Short finish
Overall: No flaws detected but lacking complexity. Could be an okay week day wine at ~$13 (guess) but would prefer something with a little more je ne sais quoi.

Tasting Notes
Fleurie is a more complex expression of Gamay with richer flavors coming from the granite and sandy soil. This wine has a lot more going on and is usually earthier and has more body than the light & juicy Beaujolais Villages. It presents a ruby red color with a fine and very aromatic nose. In the mouth, black fruits of currant, blackcurrant, and strawberry are full, harmonious, fleshy; spicy, and well-rounded. Great with starters, barbecues, white meats, and cheeses. Bring this one if you’re looking to impress your friends with a slightly more sophisticated palate!
Domaine de Roche-Guillon represents five generations of winemakers on the same hillside. Now Bruno and his family, the new generation, take the best of this plot planted by Bruno’s great-grandfather. Located in the north part of Fleurie, “La Tonne” is a single vineyard selection of 120 acres. The vinification and aging have remained the same over time in order to preserve the characteristics of the wine: fruit, soft tannins, and richness are the hallmarks of the field. The vineyards spread over gently rolling hills with granite-based soil. The southeast-facing exposure combined with an altitude of over 350 meters ensures the vines yield grapes with considerable ripeness while retaining a delicate aroma and structure typical of the appellation.
