Saddle up. This wine is made for cowboys (gauchos) and cowgirls (gauchas). 100% Tempranillo from Spain.
Classic wine made for any occasion. Ripe dried fruit flavors of black cherry, fig, and toasted almond. The wine is medium-bodied and pleasurably rustic.
Serve lightly chilled with tapas, grilled meats, or manchego.
Bodegas Milenium is, within the Bodegas Gallegas group, the branch responsible for producing table wine or wine from Spain (VDE) from the best varieties of grapes. At Bodegas Gallegas we have developed a selection of excellent wines without designation of origin and want to dignify it.

Quick Take:
Moderate dark baked/dried fruit
Rounded and lighter styled
Some smokey leather hints
Everyday < $12 wine? Won’t displease
As the temps here in Sonoma tip the 105+ range, tempranillo isn’t the first wine that comes to mind when pulling from the cellar. But when the call comes in for rattage, one steps up. (Oh such sacrifice…). Thanks Alice.
I pulled the 2017 Don Garrido El Vaquero Tempranillo from the cellar where it got a half day’s rest. A quick check of the bottle didn’t reveal any of the characteristic Spanish geographic or aging indications. Let’s see what we get.
On initial pour the color was a dark ruby with no signs of premature aging. Aroma was medium in intensity with a smokey aspect leading the way into dusty, dark cherry and dried blackberry. There were some herbal, almost minty, notes and a touch of leather. Right down the line for tempranillo with that dusty character.
The initial taste was pretty gentle with medium acidity and a moderate fruit profile that leaned into baked berry, cassis and dried fig. The tannin was fine, and somewhat subdued with a medium finish. This is a fairly light tempranillo. It hangs together pretty well, and I didn’t feel the need to accompany the wine with food. But I did anyway - why not?
A burger and yellow pepper fries extended the perceived finish of the wine and brought out dark cherry and plum flavors. It paired nicely, although I would personally look for a little more structure to match up to steak, roasts or intensely flavored entrees.
The 2017 El Vaquero Tempranillo won’t displease as an everyday wine choice with light meals or on its own. Don’t expect the concentration or structure of a Riserva or even a Crianza, but you will get a few hints of that dusty tempranillo character. Judging from the moderate fruit profile, I wouldn’t even think of cellaring this wine, but that doesn’t seem to be why it was made. Now that I see the price point, it’s a good QPR. Hope that helps Casematers. Cheers.
Loved the Lab Rat report. I’m in. I am actually sitting in the Casemates parking lot waiting for everyone to come to work so i can unload the InZinerator we had on CaseMates last weekend. Left Amador at 4AM so I would drive through the cool night and morning hours.
Cheers,
Scott

@cyclensip Thanks for the report. Guess what I’m having for dinner tonight?
@WCCWineGirl What time are we eating?
@cyclensip Where does it say 2017 vintage…not seeing it…
Seems to be available in quite a few places for $110 case of 12, some with shipping included. Fwiw as far as pricing.
