Our 2014 Grenache is a medium-bodied, highly fragrant wine with an abundance of mid-palate flavour and texture. Cooling dark fruits, spice, and violets leap from the glass. Not lively and flashy like so many McLaren Vale Grenaches. The wine is sure of its capabilities. It quickly becomes evident that this is the sort of wine you settle in to and come back to time and time again.
Beautifully balanced and well proportioned. Neither fruit nor tannin dominates. Warming alcohol and a gentle kiss of fresh herbs at the close. Much to give in the next 5 years.
Food pairing: anything pork based - from pulled to belly

Sorry, forgot which hemisphere I was in for a moment…
Excited for another opportunity to sample and share with the rest of the community! Today’s offering is a 2014 Australian Grenache from ess & see wines. (2014 McLaren Vale Grenache no. 3 to be exact.)
Upon opening, there’s a ton of stone cherry, and maybe blackberry? on the nose. It pours great, with a beautiful color expected of the fruit. After a few sniffs and a minute to sit, we’re also picking up some spice that may be anise.
From the start, flavor is easy drinking—it has some years in the bottle, and would likely be good for a few more if you are looking to hold, but there’s no issue about drinking it today. If you like grenache, this presents as a straight-forward everyday bottle. Flavors of fresh fruit and some earth tones are easy on the tongue.
An hour later, the wine is opening up a bit more. My rough palate catches leather along with the aforementioned fruit. Not a lot of change from earlier, so the initial screen still stands: a regular go-to that can be pulled off the shelf anytime the occasion or menu calls.
After a few more hours, the aromas have continued to release, and here’s a good mellow “standard of wine” to quote an impromptu second taster.
If you’re a fan of grenache, this is an easy pick up, but don’t fear missing out if, like me, your still trying to reduce bottles.
Thanks very much to ess & see, WD and Alice for the opportunity to sample! I always love the chance to share the very limited knowledge that I have.
This was up on reverse wine snob (where it was $22/bottle) a couple of weeks ago, their comments:
“…opens with beautiful strawberry and lovely spice aromas along with excellent touches of licorice. It’s very enticing and still quite fresh.
Tasting the medium-bodied wine reveals similar flavors to the nose that all combine in a wonderfully seamless and balanced way in the mouth. With a smooth mouthfeel and well integrated spice this is some good Grenache!
It ends dry and quite long. And while it was excellent on day 1 we found it to be even better by day 2.
Still quite lively and fresh at this point, I would guess it still has several years of peak drinking left…”
A comment from the winery, also posted on rws:
“Dean and Jodie Zimmer are great mates of ours. They grow Grenache for us on their little Australian vineyard on Twenty-Eight Rd. Theirs is a great part of the “Vale to grow Grenache”. We decided to treat this parcel with kid gloves, and even though there’s not a lot of extract, colour or weight - there’s an abundance of drinkability, flavour and freshness.”

“It’s juuuuiicy…!” Quoth my wife when she smelled it for the first time. Notes of ripe cranberries and tart cherries. Easy approach, light tannins, and an enjoyable finish. Apparently it goes well with Thai lettuce cups. And it got better with time!
I ordered this on Friday night, then last night I got a notification that it shipped and would be there this Friday. I’m traveling this week and next and that would have made life more complicated for me. I emailed support who said maybe contact UPS. Then when I check the status this afternoon I got this :
