@radiolysis Funny story about expensive produce. I first went to Japan for a work project about 25 years ago… there was one of the high-end department store across from the hotel, so on the weekend I checked it out. The basement floor was all food items, mostly things you would buy to bring as gifts (nobody was going to pay this much for food they would eat themselves). This was where I learned that a nice pear* can cost $10 and a nice melon* can cost $100. And would be packed in a hand-crafted wooden box. And that was 25 years ago. This was a grade of carefully-tended produce we don’t get in this country, but we don’t pay for it either.
we are only talking about pears and melons. No dirty thoughts.

Go to an Asian market some time, and pick up a ゆうゆう or one of their sale flyers, especially around the holidays. I’ve been dumbfounded at the prices.
They are very overpriced though
But yeah, good. We have someone who grows them locally and sells them at the farmer’s market. Cheaper and better than the grocery store, smaller too.
Even splurging on the ones in styrofoam holders too!
@radiolysis Are there other types?

My wife and I visited (and bought some Asian pears at) an Asian Pear orchard when we were vacationing in Virginia. They are very good.
