NV (2021 bottling) Exelencia Red Blend by Seis Soles
Tasting Notes
This wine initially gives hints of ripe red plum and Maraschino cherry that mingle with notes of tobacco and clove. (Think of an unsweetened Manhattan cocktail). After a bit of time, deeper aromas of anise and an herbal bouquet set the foundation for a very rich nose. Tasting the wine showcases the subtle oak and bright acidity that once again should remind you of a cherry but this time one that is still ripening. Soft, but present tannins match the bright acidity and create a viscous mouth-feel that feels alive and persists well into your next sip. This wine isn’t a huge wine but can hold its own against a steak as well as complement a lighter chicken or duck dish.
About the Wine
The Exelencia is a private-label Red Blend, created by Owner/Winemaker Chris Rivera as a special project for a client. The client was unable to purchase the wine, so our Casemates customers get to enjoy a great deal on a unique red wine!
Please note that some of the wine labels use the spelling Exelencia and others have the spelling Excelencia. It’s the same wine…just a misspelling on the label. !Salud!
Specs
Blend: 85% Lodi Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Napa Syrah, 5% Clarksburg Petite Sirah
Barrel Regime: Aged for 22 months in once-used oak so the oak doesn’t overpower the natural fruit
My parents immigrated from central México where the Aztecs believed the world had been created and destroyed in four cycles, giving way to life under the fifth sun. Seis Soles, the sixth sun, represents the growth of our generation’s culture and values.
Every person, regardless of their skin color, belief system, or geographic location, lives under the 6th Sun. Seis Soles respects tradition but strives to promote the new. A new understanding of how we all are in this together, promoting a healthy planet and a new way to think about wine.
I’ve crafted these wines by hand from vineyard to the bottle. I’ve always been drawn to balanced wines that pair well with food, are lower in alcohol, and bright on the palate; wines made by hand from good, honest winemaking. I’ve had the privilege of learning from some extraordinary winemakers over the years. It is my pleasure to share with you a new take on tradition.
!Salud! Chris Rivera

Wine arrived yesterday, we opened it last night. First thing of note was that there was a fairly significant amount of red running up the side of the cork. Not a good sign. I would post pics, but I can’t remember how.
Pop and pour definitely gives cherry and plum, and a little bit of sour on the nose.
First sip is definitely sour and a little sweet. I dont get a lot of acid or tannin. It seems like this one may be the victim of a bad cork. It’s not altogether sideways I don’t think, but it’s headed that direction. Stoppered it up and will come back in a bit and report again.
@6soleswinery Yeah, it sure seems that way. Cooked along the way somewhere. It happens. A little odd in this case, because it was only going to Oregon.
@6soleswinery How different is this red blend from the one in March of 2021? Unfortunately, I don’t have notes on what went into that blend, but it was very tasty.
the previous Red Blend was Syrah and Cabernet and the wine had a nose dominated by the French oak it aged in and had more residual sugar. This Blend is meant to have less (but still present) oak and less residual sugar. It’s lodi dominant so the fruit notes are for sure present. I REALLY like this blend because to me it comes across a little more mature. It has a quality that expresses the long time it spent in the barrel. This wine was for a project that didn’t materialize out of state so I’m glad to be able to offer here on casemates.
This will be my third purchase of Seis Soles, and I’ve been very happy with the first two, the red blend from a year ago and the recent rosé. Looking forward to trying this one too.
@agailb thank you for trying the wines. If you like the previous Red Blend I know you’ll like this wine. There two wines are different but have similar important attributes
Is wine being shipped expedited and with ice for the season yet? Can’t risk ordering if not; this time of year, without ice in the box, it always arrives a day late after UPS accidentally leaves it on a truck all day cooking at about a hundred degrees inside.
@ericb
I don’t believe Casemates has ever included ice packs, not even as a paid option. They do use refrigerated trucks for part of the journey during “summer shipping”. IIRC summer shipping starts with the first offer in June, so it does not apply to this offer.
@chipgreen That’s too bad - in my past experience, 100% of the time I’ve ordered a case anytime near summer in Illinois, it gets nearly boiled to death before delivery. I just stopped ordering anything outside of late Fall or Winter. I could’ve sworn there was at least one time they offered ice packs as a shipping add-on a couple years ago.
Found the survey question interesting, since research on why some people were so affected by Covid, while others were mild cases, that caused by level of D3 vitamin in their bodies, which is created naturally by sunshine. Be sure to take your vitamins with a glass of wine….
Just finished a glass. Beautiful. Loved it. After the glass was gone there is an incredible tobacco scent in the glass, and now I’m craving a cigar to go with my second glass.

I’m married to a Manhattan-lover, this makes two consecutive days a wine here has me thinking I should buy some.

Apologies for the tardy review. Been hectic here.

@cbrehman
sorry the wine arrived in poor condition. Sounds like it encountered some heat on its way to you.

Hello everyone, I’m here if anyone has any questions!

Any other rats?

@chipgreen @ericb I can recall once or twice receiving Casemates shipment that had ice packs.
I loved the 2018 red blend and always regretted only ordering 6 bottles. Not making that mistake again
I was buying it until it said can’t ship to IA
@onic, at least two of us noticed that omission.

@6soleswinery I’m having difficulty understanding how a vintage 2020 wine has 22 months in oak in May. Is this a 2020 and when did you bottle it?
This wine has no vintage so if says 2020 somewhere I apologize for the mistake. It was bottled in March of 2021
I see where that was stated on the website. The wine is not 2020. Majority of the wine is 2018.
@6soleswinery Would it then be proper to correct 2020 to NV?
@rjquillin yes, that makes sense to me. I don’t control that but yes, the wine is not labeled with a vintage
Thanks @6soleswinery. I’m in for 12.
Enjoy!
Wow! So delicious! best purchase in a while!!
