2018 Fog & Wind Pinot Noir, Wohler Vineyard, Russian River Valley
Tasting Notes
The 2018 vintage offered moderate weather, cool evening temperatures and a long, even growing season. The weather conditions were ideal and allowed the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly over the course of summer and early fall. This allowed the grapes to gain flavor complexities and ripe tannins, while retaining natural acidity. The vineyards offered grapes of exceptional quality and high yields alike. Wohler Vineyard was harvested in multiple passes as each block ripened at a different pace. The clones were vinified separately, with 667 and 828 providing richness and density as the foundation of the blend. Clone 115 provided bright fruit and elegance, with a splash of Wädenswil 2A for earthiness.
Vineyard Notes
Wohler Vineyard in Forestville sits in the heart of the famed Russian River Valley, within sight of the Russian River and the historic Wohler Bridge. The combination of climate and Goldridge Series soils provides an environment well suited for growing ultra-premium Pinot Noir. We source grapes from five distinct blocks within the vineyard. Our blocks of clones 667 and 828 sit at the highest elevation and are the best draining blocks on the property. Clones 115 and 2A are planted in cooler, lower spots within the vineyard where the soils contain more clay.

@rjquillin I thought it interesting to include that bit of info. Perhaps that’s what was originally planned, but this year nothing has gone as planned.
@rjquillin yes, that one.
This looks like a label they do just for flash sites. Other wines with this label have been sold on last bottle and wine spies. They even made a bare bones website for this branding and listed everything as $50. Even when that’s more than the regular bottle price.
@klezman@rjquillin The only difference in the specs here and on that tech sheet is the bottling date. August vs December.
IF the specs here are indeed accurate, I’ve a feeling this is Sojourn’s Wohler bottling with the Fog & Wind label slapped on it. Too much wine and a crazy market right now so protect the brand? Or maybe barrels that didn’t make the cut but handled the same?? Main reason I say that and happy to be corrected I do not believe there has been a Fog & Wind vineyard designate wine before. Correcting myself, a Sangiacomo maybe? Anyway I’ve purchased before and the only label I’ve ever seen is a Sonoma Coast designation. The WTSO/Last Bottle/Wine Spies bottlings have all been blends. So this is a little different animal here from those.
@kaolis@rjquillin you found the same info on cellar tracker. This appears to be the second vineyard designate under this label.
Are we going to have a winery rep drop by? Or @neilfindswine since he worked there for a while iirc.
@moczy@sammypedram You all counter with some Joose/Jooze from The Answer and I will make the drive. Yes, I’m a sour gal, by taste not by nature . Not sure if other offerings you missed out on I got, but if I’m making the trip let’s get all wines involved before I head out!
Hi Mates,
Earlier this week our doorbell rang and our dedicated UPS driver had a small package. I knew immediately what it was…RAT WINE!! I opened the box and found a bottle of 2018 Wohler Vineyards Fog & Wind Russian River Valley Pinot Noir. I immediately checked my email to find the details.
Wednesday night I got together with my son (HopHeadB), his HERO wife (a NNP at a local Hospital’s NICU)!
The 1st pour was through a Vinturi Red Wine Aerator and after a couple of minutes, we started to sample the wine. The three of us concurred very closely in our observations.
Visually, I thought I saw a slightly brick red appearance on the start of the 1st pour, but once poured in each glass, the wine had a normal medium body red Pinot Noir appearance.
On the nose, we got very light heat and cherry/strawberry aroma.
On the 1st taste, the consensus was very friendly strawberry flavors through the mid-palate and a short finish with very light heat and light tannins.
The 2nd sampling was very much the same.
My son then brought out some Cojack cheese along with some Cabot White Cheddar Horseradish cheese! Wow, this wine went great with both, with the CWC Horseradish cheese the absolute winner. The cheese did not mute the wine, but it gave us a very unique soft mouthfeel through the initial, mid-palate, and finish.
At that point the baby decided that her day was over. As they tended to her, I corked the bottle and headed home. When I got home, I pulled the cork and capped the bottle with a vacuum closure.
Last night, I poured the final two samples. The strawberry fruit had disappeared and the wine got a little tart, but it was still easy to drink. I spent the day making a special clam chowder and after numerous chowder samplings, I wonder if I messed up my wine palate. The last two wine samples were the same as stated.
To finalize this rattage, the three of us really liked the day one wine. The Pinot Noir was definitely in our wheelhouse. If the price is right and under $15, we’ll go in for a case. I’m lousy at guessing the price of wine between CA and Midwest pricing. Hoping Casemates has another nicely priced offer! Time to get this info posted!
Thanks Alice and WD49 for thinking of me!
@losthighwayz The bottle was freshly shipped and my experience has been that the wine is usually tight/closed. We only used the Vinturi for the 1st sampling. The other three samplings were out of the bottle that was open for about a half hour and next day.
How much more are you saving by buying a full case?
(Note: Tax & Shipping not included in savings calculations)
2018 Fog & Wind Russian River Valley Pinot Noir - $30 = 9.08%
If this tastes anything close to one of Sojourn’s typical pinots it is a steal at this price point. One of my favorite producers. Is Eric Bradley the wine maker for this label as well? Would be interesting to know.
@jshaver He is and has been as I know it to be, listed for sure as winemaker on '16 and '17 if one is looking for internet proof. And we know all is truth out here in la-la land!
I feel like I have failed my duty as a rat. I received the bottle on Tuesday, with a 95° bottle temperature. I have never had a cooked wine, or bottle shock, or any of the other things I commonly see people claim why their bottle is flawed. Unfortunately, I think I received a flawed bottle.
So much so, I called WCC and wrote Alice questioning if I should leave my honest opinions of the wine. I never heard back, so here it goes. (Remember, we assume this bottle was flawed.)
Aromas: Cherry. Raspberry. Vanilla. Butterscotch?
Taste: Almost none of the fruits, little to no mid-palate impact. Thin. Watery. “Light and pleasant” if I am trying to sell the wine. Virtually no tannin. Astringent and bitter.
Finish: Short. Abrupt. Bitter.
I apologize to WCC, the winery, WD, Alice, and the community for this crappy review. I cannot believe my (and 3 others) impressions from the wine are accurate of the offering. I had my usual verbose rat report going when we tried the wine, and… this.
I love RRV Pinot. This made it especially hard to rate the bottle as low as we did. (I will leave out some of the opinions on it.) My apologies.
I appreciate the positive feedback for what was not good feedback. For the more-in-the-know veterans, does cork stainage coming up through the center indicate it? Does an incredibly bulbous cork indicate it? (Obviously experienced both)
I just want to know what to know in the future. This really upset me to not report a decent review.
@klezman@KNmeh7
Had a bottle of Willamette valley pinot delivered recently from wine dot com with cork trying to push its way out of the capsule. I did drink the pinot and it was actually quite good so guess I got lucky? But would not have been able to think about cellaring it for any length of time. They gave me a refund after I sent a picture, so it was all good.
@KNmeh7 My bottle came out of CA to Louisville, KY to CLE. Arrived in KY & OH early AM. On the truck approx 9:08 am, delivered at 1:18pm @ 84F. Put the bottle by an AC duct to get it to 73F.
@KNmeh7 You seem to have had a somewhat similar experience that we noted on the 1st day. Some fruit, then a short mid-palate that went to a finish of very light tannins. We actually liked the wine while eating the cheese with it! My son thought he tasted a little oak at first, but it disappeared quickly. That could have been your vanilla! The 2nd day, no fruit detected, but was drinkable with the tartness and not much of anything else.
@chipgreen@KNmeh7 Yeah, not all heat damaged bottles end up the same. I’ve had some turn out well, as have you. And even after a year or so they still taste good sometimes. The big deal to me with any heat damage is something that I’d likely want to age (like this wine, or my heat damaged Stolpman) or something I’m trying to evaluate (like a labrat bottle).
Between trying to figure out how to open a school safety amidst COVID and dealing with serious health issues of my octogenarian parents, I definitely feel like I’m walking around in a fog. We are most assuredly expecting “wind” here in FL this weekend. Maybe it’s a sign that I should buy this.
Is the winery participating at all? In a post elsewhere, I read that they were trying to ‘separate’ this from Sojourn - and the Fog and Wind website was not working when I looked at it this AM . . . Interesting . . .
@rjquillin They’ve had wines listed on LastBottle and WineSpies in the past as well - and someone noted this:
‘There was some chatter on Twitter a while back about this wine. When I commented, Sojourn sent me an email that said the wine was made by Sojourn winemaker Erich Bradley and that it was a new brand they just developed. They went on to say that there were no current plans to make it part of Sojourn releases. I took a flyer for four with the Last Bottle price of $26 and free shipping.’
@rjquillin@tercerowines That’s exactly my main question I wish they’d answer. Is this “declassified” Sojourn wine or is this a different label with different intent. I could easily see it being either. I’ve liked all the Sojourn wines I’ve had (all 3), but if the stylistic intent is different here then I just don’t know. With one rat bottle being cooked it’s also not helpful.
I would think they made this wine for restaurants or export and with those markets dried up gotta move it. I would imagine if you like Sojourn’s style this will be pretty good at least.
Alice took the time, after days later, to respond to my e-mail (It was in the “junk folder.” Yea, sure.)
Apparently, if you get a faulty wine as a rat you aren’t supposed to report. WHICH IS WHAT I CALLED AND ASKED ABOUT.
So, the fact that WCC cannot answer emails or calls when it is from a rat, but, in hindsight, basically tell me to GTFO, sours me more than the cooked bottle.
@michaepf The wine isn’t a good look on my glass. FWIW. Oh, shit, I am supposed to tow the company line.
I can still buy wine that is decent, and I’ve already kissed my “look” goodbye. I didn’t know it was a beauty pageant.
And it’s the fucking truth. I got a lot of subliminal shade from Alice, and if I never get another labrat bottle so be it. You can have all mine. Look good. Be handsome.
@KNmeh7@Winedavid49 And to think I’ve been worried about getting banned…it’s a good time to be kinder and gentler. As they say, it’s just grape juice man
@brucenie@winedavid49
For me, it was the no-show winery.
I’ve liked Sojourn, but with an offer like this, they need to show they have a voice if they expect some fence-sitters to pony up
@brucenie@rjquillin@Winedavid49 same here. Even just an assurance that it’s the same wine or nearly the same would have convinced me to get some. It’s a great price for the real deal, but with the rat reports and no winery it’s just not possible right now.
@brucenie@klezman@rjquillin@Winedavid49
I fell off the fence and went in for 4. I’ll try to remember to post some notes when I pull a cork, but that’s not likely to be for at least a month after arrival. I’ve got a backlog of boxes that I just can’t seem to find the energy to open…and find (non-existent) rack space for.
@CorTot@losthighwayz
It was at least an intriguing offer. I am a fan of Sojourn. I think enough of their wines to have gifted a bottle of Sojourn Rodgers Creek Pinot to the Chairman of our Board of Directors. Just too many question marks surrounding this Wind & Fog bottling.
@CorTot based on? I would agree if it was a Sojourn label but it is not and too many unanswered questions. Decertified fruit? Second label? Curious to hear about your reasoning at $25 per
@CorTot@losthighwayz@ScottW58 What evidence? It’s an opinion. You thought the offer was “subpar”, while several of us thought it was an excellent offer. I’m on the fence between good vs excellent depending on the difference between the two labels.
@CorTot@klezman@losthighwayz
Well for one Sojourn has made some pretty great wines for a long time ymmv, it was made by the Sojourn winemaker who has a pretty stellar history, it is also grapes from a pretty great vineyard. With all that said it still came at a reasonable if not great price depending on the juice. That is compelling to me. Just because the winery didn’t show up or even have time to come on doesn’t mean it’s not a good deal (don’t be so full of yourself). Maybe you should just stick to your wine gorilla’s or your Herman Story slop you seem to love and of course ymmv
@CorTot@klezman@ScottW58 I never said anything about winery not showing up so that’s mute. Cortot said an excellent deal so wondering why that is when wines from this winery have been offered on various flash sites at similar pricing with a lower buy in. Excellent a strong word imo . in any event no need to justify myself. Seems like you guys enjoy jumping on anything I have to say so I’ll let you savor the moment!
@CorTot@klezman@losthighwayz@ScottW58 The difference on this site is that casemates customers not only appreciate but feel more special when a winery graces the site - and is available to answer questions, etc. Just makes sense - and it’s what set’s this site apart from lastbottle, etc - sites that are all about ‘sizzle and sales’ but not about community . . .
@losthighwayz Wine maker and vineyard pedigree.
The one rat was good on the notes the other got a bad bottle. Seemed like a winner of an offer.
I would of jumped in at a lower price point fwiw.
@CorTot@tercerowines Yes, exactly this. A lower price point would have made it a no-brainer, and the winery stopping by to confirm (or even relaying via WD or WCCWineGirl) that this is made the same way with the same stylistic intentions as the Sojourn-labelled wine would have got me in. And we need more wine like a hole in the head.

Seems like a bit of a time warp with the release date.
Or did Vivino and WCC get pre-release product?
Are the other specs accurate?
@rjquillin August in a couple days. That’s Fall right? and come on now, how many Spring mailers have you received in February?
@kaolis @rjquillin one already gotten “fall” mailers from several wineries. Anybody want my Turley allocation?

Is this any different from the Sojourn labelled bottling? All the specs and notes seem the same.
@klezman this one?
@rjquillin yes, that one.
This looks like a label they do just for flash sites. Other wines with this label have been sold on last bottle and wine spies. They even made a bare bones website for this branding and listed everything as $50. Even when that’s more than the regular bottle price.

@losthighwayz I don’t think so.

@bunnymasseuse waiting for Rat reports, but definitely interested. RVA close enough for ya?

@KNmeh7 You’re not the first, and you did what you needed to do, thanks.
I recall a bottle from years ago that introduced me to what Brett tastes like; another difficult bottle to accurately Rat, but I learned from it.
@KNmeh7 Thank you for reporting anyways. Now we have an idea of what a compromised bottle is like. Will keep you on the list for a redo.
@KNmeh7 Yes, a leaking or pushed out cork along with heat is a sure indication of heat damage.
@klezman @KNmeh7
Had a bottle of Willamette valley pinot delivered recently from wine dot com with cork trying to push its way out of the capsule. I have never been disappointed in a Sojourn wine, for what that’s worth. Never had the Fog and Wind, though.
@strongry Ditto. That’s why I want more information from the winery…
@klezman @strongry But is it possible to “break” Fog and Wind?
Damn. This looks good. I never get to rat Pinot like this.
Is the winery participating at all? In a post elsewhere, I read that they were trying to ‘separate’ this from Sojourn - and the Fog and Wind website was not working when I looked at it this AM . . . Interesting . . .
@tercerowines Unlike you, not yet!
You, and some others ‘get it’, most seem not to…
Where was elsewhere? WB?
@rjquillin They’ve had wines listed on LastBottle and WineSpies in the past as well - and someone noted this:
‘There was some chatter on Twitter a while back about this wine. @tercerowines @winedavid49 @wccwinegirl
Can we get the winery “invited” to participate?
@rjquillin @tercerowines @WCCWineGirl on it.
I would think they made this wine for restaurants or export and with those markets dried up gotta move it. I would imagine if you like Sojourn’s style this will be pretty good at least.
@ScottW58 these are wines that they’ve made for awhile apparently . . .
Alice took the time, after days later, to respond to my e-mail (It was in the “junk folder.” Yea, sure.)

@KNmeh7 I’ve had bad rat bottles and always reported anyways, I’ve never received a complaint about that. Thank you for the report.
@KNmeh7 Fwiw, this post isn’t a good look on you.
@michaepf The wine isn’t a good look on my glass. FWIW. Oh, shit, I am supposed to tow the company line.

@CorTot @KNmeh7 Agreed. Thanks for giving the complete story. It’s always useful.
@KNmeh7 WCCWinegirl is a rock star. chill.
@KNmeh7 @Winedavid49 And to think I’ve been worried about getting banned…it’s a good time to be kinder and gentler. As they say, it’s just grape juice man
I do want to give this a try, but with the record heat and UPS delays I’ll sadly pass.
@brucenie @winedavid49
For me, it was the no-show winery.
I’ve liked Sojourn, but with an offer like this, they need to show they have a voice if they expect some fence-sitters to pony up
@brucenie @rjquillin @Winedavid49 same here. Even just an assurance that it’s the same wine or nearly the same would have convinced me to get some. It’s a great price for the real deal, but with the rat reports and no winery it’s just not possible right now.
@brucenie @klezman @rjquillin @Winedavid49
I fell off the fence and went in for 4. I’ll try to remember to post some notes when I pull a cork, but that’s not likely to be for at least a month after arrival. I’ve got a backlog of boxes that I just can’t seem to find the energy to open…and find (non-existent) rack space for.
Recent Friday offerings have been subpar at best. Bring back the big guns!
@losthighwayz this is a big gun, or at least should have been with even ten minutes of winery participation.
@losthighwayz I thought it was an excellent offer.
@CorTot @losthighwayz
@chipgreen @CorTot completely agree
@CorTot @losthighwayz
I agree with Cortot!
@CorTot @ScottW58 can you guys elaborate? You can’t make claims without supporting evidence! You sound like a President I shall not name
@CorTot @losthighwayz @ScottW58 What evidence? It’s an opinion. You thought the offer was “subpar”, while several of us thought it was an excellent offer. I’m on the fence between good vs excellent depending on the difference between the two labels.
@CorTot @klezman @losthighwayz
@CorTot @klezman @ScottW58 so you form opinions out of thin air? Confused
@CorTot @klezman @ScottW58 I never said anything about winery not showing up so that’s mute.
@CorTot @klezman @losthighwayz @ScottW58
mute/moot
Which should it be?
@CorTot @klezman @rjquillin @ScottW58 grammer police!
@CorTot @losthighwayz @rjquillin @ScottW58 Grammar?
@CorTot @klezman @losthighwayz @rjquillin @ScottW58
/giphy Grammer
@CorTot @klezman @rjquillin @ScottW58 haha fell for it. You guys are predictable! Of course I know it’s (tempted to type “its”) grammar.
@CorTot @losthighwayz @rjquillin @ScottW58 Yeah, I know. At least you’d better know, being a family of educators!
@CorTot @klezman @losthighwayz @ScottW58
You ~are~ a school Principal, are you not?
@CorTot @klezman @losthighwayz @rjquillin @ScottW58
It was never about grammar anyway. It was a malapropism.
@chipgreen @CorTot @klezman @rjquillin @ScottW58 I never new about malapropisms. Learn something knew everyday!
@CorTot @klezman @losthighwayz @ScottW58 The difference on this site is that casemates customers not only appreciate but feel more special when a winery graces the site - and is available to answer questions, etc.
@CorTot @klezman @losthighwayz @rjquillin @ScottW58
One of my favorite woot shirts:
Irony: when someone replies to a post, “your an idiot!”
@CorTot @klezman @pseudogourmet98 @rjquillin @ScottW58 ha! I gave up looking for tshirts on woot. Too many to sort through. Miss the old days!
@CorTot same here. Maybe subpar was not the right word. @chipgreen said it better “intriguing”.
Would have jumped in under $16 per bottle
And they never appeared, eh? Bummer for the casemates crew . . .
@tercerowines agreed, i was really hoping to get some background info on this one.
Oh well there’s always more wine
@CorTot @tercerowines Yes, exactly this. A lower price point would have made it a no-brainer, and the winery stopping by to confirm (or even relaying via WD or WCCWineGirl) that this is made the same way with the same stylistic intentions as the Sojourn-labelled wine would have got me in. And we need more wine like a hole in the head.
@klezman hence not an excellent deal, right?
