Spicy red fruit aromas burst out of the glass. More floral cherry, tart strawberry and holiday spices land happily on the palate. Although the wine is opaque in color, the aromas and flavors are bold and unapologetic. There’s just the right amount of caramelization from the oak to round out the finish leaving the mouth watering and begging for another sip.
Vintage and Winemaker Notes
The 2012 growing season brought to wine country some of the most optimum summer weather patterns in decades. A solid spring fruit set ensured the largest harvest in Sonoma County’s history. The great spring conditions transitioned into near perfect summer weather with above average temperature during the day and below average at night meant there was a large temperature variance every 12 hours of approximately 45 degrees. This temperature flux allowed for the days to ripen the sugars but the cold nights retained the natural freshness and acidity.

Harvest Moon Estate and Winery was founded on growing, producing and bottling world-class Russian River Valley wine in a balanced, elegant style. Our premise is that Russian River Valley Zinfandel can be just as layered and complex as any Pinot Noir or Bordeaux variety in the world and receive the same respect. The Pitts family has grown quality grapes in the Russian River Valley since 1976. In 2000, son Randy reverse migrated from San Francisco back to Sonoma County to assume the farming responsibilities at the family’s modest nine-acre ranch. In conjunction with lessons on farming by his Dad and a few viticulture/enology courses at the local junior college, Randy made a barrel of homemade Zinfandel off the ranch’s back block which turned out exceptionally tasty. Quickly concluding that properly farmed and judiciously fermented, Zinfandel has great capabilities of being California’s own wine nobility. The growers-turned winemakers birthed their inaugural vintage in 2002 and look forward to making their Zinprint on the winescene for decades to come.

@rjquillin went to the tasting room last week and it was really quite good. Walked away spending my money on the bubbly red stuff, but this was a solid wine.
Let me start off by saying this is my very first review of wine so please take what I have to say with a grain of salt (it’s definitely not my day job). After picking this bottle at my local FedEx I immediately took it home and put it in the cellar and let it acclimate for a couple of days. On Sunday afternoon we opened it and immediately poured a glass and let it come up to 63° before continuing, poured the rest through an aerator and decanted. The first glass had hints of alcohol, tobacco, ash, green pepper on the nose and maybe a little oak. The color is very light for a Zinfandel it reminds me more of a Pinot that a Zinfandel. I also think drinks very similar to a Pinot, light and easy to drink. For us it would not be a Zinfandel that we would purchase but it’s easy to see why people could like it… Maybe even love it, did I mention it’s very easy to drink! After we let it decant for a couple of hours we poured two glasses and it did open up a little bit, the fruit came forward and the alcohol was subtle on the nose. Thanks for the opportunity I hope this helps and please don’t hesitate to ask questions.
@NapaBob Yes, thanks for the review and tell your wife it is a beautifully put together photo with great bokeh. If she has an attachable (or detachable) flash, bouncing it off the back wall, side wall, or ceiling would add just a bit of extra light to help balance the bright background. What is she shooting with (camera/lens)?
We had this at our gathering a few weeks back. A group of five or so took some time tasting this wine and actually compared it to two other zins: Wellington and a Hendry Block 7 and 22. The Harvest Moon was my favorite.
No formal notes but this is a bright, feminine zin with raspberry and some slight earthiness. This is not your big jammy zin (I enjoy these as well). Think of it as a zin that would please a PN drinker.
One caveat: my experience with Harvest Moon has been spotty. There is too much bottle variation within same vintage and grape. Sometimes one bottle is home run and the next one is either corked or has a different profile. I am not sure why this is the case but I have. Noticed this with multiple purchases.
@kaolis I would tend to agree, very rare exceptions when mine comes out. Normally if I don’t have the time to let things happen naturally, I’ll grab a whiskey instead.
What’s up CaseMates! Greetings from a cold foggy morning in the Russian River Valley. Today we are offering our neighborhood blend of Zinfandel coming from three different distinct vineyards all located within a 5 mile radius of the winery. Young vine middle-aged vine and old vine are found in this compilation.
The 2012 vintage is commonly known as one of the best in years, certainly since 2007. Applying principles of Pinot Noir to cool climate’s ZIN is both challenging as a winemaker yet super rewarding as a wine drinker This Zinfandel will seller for at least another 5 to 7 years gracefully.
Inside, one finds Spicy red fruit floral tart raspberry medium mouth feel light color and a juicy long finish.
I really want to order a case of this as we loved the last Harvest Moon Pinot that was here. However really worried on getting the wine in decent shape with shipping. Live in Texas and it is in the mid to upper 90’s now.
My last order of Kendric Pinot made it to the area and FedEx loaded it on a truck on Saturday and finally delivered to Walgreens (redirected as soon as order was shipped) on Monday.
So it spent all day Saturday and Sunday sitting baking in a truck in Texas heat. I just don’t feel comfortable ordering today’s even though we really want it unless there is something actually said about shipping being in a way that will take care of it.
Here is the tracking showing it sitting on the truck from saturday morning.

As in the past, starting with this offer (Mid May) we are going with our “specific day” shipping method. East coast will leave between W-F’s and Texas will leave on a Monday. Southern CA will leave on a M-T’s. This will be in play until the ~ the first week in June when we’ll turn on our summer shipping precautions.
@Winedavid49 Specifics? What are current “summer shipping precautions”?
Would it be more wine friendly to hold until fall, and not ship during the summer? I know I’m done until fall. But hardly a player with one share and one order.
@Winedavid49 WD, Why don’t you bake in a “Hold at Fedex location” option in the shipping details? I find myself waiting and checking for the shipment to show up in their system before I can reroute it to Kinko’s. Would be nice to tick a box on the order form and have it headed there out of the gate.
@Winedavid49 Sounds great and THANK YOU! Trigger has been pulled and I’m not even going to worry about it. Sorry for stirring the pot but I’m now at ease!
/giphy great-observant-taco
@CorTot@rjquillin “Ship to” and “Hold for pickup” are not the same thing. From FedEx’s website: "How it’s done
When you ship a package, requesting Hold at FedEx Location service is easy. Simply use one of these options:
Designate Hold at FedEx Location when you create a shipping label."
@billmort@rjquillin Do what you want but RJ and I have both done this for years with zero issues. They even slap a HAL sticker on it with a return date listed typically 1 week from receipt. Exactly the same as if you intercepted and re-routed it. It also gets to the fedex office quicker because sometimes the re-route method causes a delay while they reprocess the box. I havn’t tried it with Walgreens but I don’t see why it would work any different. I’ll try it on my next shipment.
@CorTot@rjquillin@Winedavid49 While I appreciate the advice, the whole point of my suggestion was to get Casemates to consider support for the hold for pickup options to be built into the ordering process. Thereby making it seamless and foolproof for the rest of us FedEx less-than-power users.
The ALTERNATIVE suggestion to change my universal shipping option to a FedEx location would send EVERYTHING there. I do not want EVERYTHING sent to a FedEx location, ONLY MY WINE.
@billmort‘s idea solves this dilemma in the easiest and most efficient manner possible.
PLEASE add a “HOLD AT FEDEX LOCATION” option to the shipping details, allowing us to add a PRESELECTED FedEx location of OUR choice to the option.
We are already experiencing 90+ weather in the Atlanta GA area. And that doesn’t account for the heat buildup in metal delivery trucks, or wine in large aluminum bulk shipping/freight/cargo containers waiting in the sun for connection transfer on airfield ramps (yup, airline pilot writing this):
As the system exists now, rerouting wine shipments seems to add at least two ADDITIONAL days to the delivery.
BTW, since FedEx has added Saturday delivery there is no Home Delivery on Mondays in the Atlanta area.
I have had shipping take EIGHT days (no associated holiday), and we are NOT in the boondocks. Seven days has been common place. (My wife and I have ordered 26 cases from Casemates since January.)
The issue with depending on the guarantee is we might not discover a problem for years. We have a substantial investment in our inventory. Will Casemates even BE there if we complain in two or three years? Woot’s marketing plan failed. Who is to say this site won’t follow the same path, despite the best intentions.
@billmort@jeffreywsnyder@Winedavid49
I could be incorrect here, but…
When shipped “home delivery” (not ground), you get Saturday delivery, and as you said, no Monday.
Shipped “ground” you get Mon~Fri, no Saturday unless specified for Saturday delivery.
I think WCC now uses ‘ground’ and not home, as was once the case. Possibly to insure no failed Saturday deliveries that may have been sent to a closed business.
@rjquillin Do you leave it in your name and just put the FedEx location address in? This would make my life a lot easier instead of constantly re-routing as I and apparently most others have been doing. Admittedly, an option while ordering would also be sweet though.
@sammypedram I suppose you could always fit HAL or hold-at-location on an additional address line if one is available, or even after your name to make it even more clear.
@rjquillin@sammypedram I have three shipping addresses saved in my casemates account, 2 of which are Fedex Print & Ship Centers. They all start with my name, next line:
Fedex Office Print & Ship Cent, then street adress etc. I also ship to the office where I work during the cooler months. You just drop down the shipping address you want to use when you order. I’ve never had trouble doing this or re directing to a Fedex location after it’s shipped. My last order was shipped to a Fedex store and I re directed it to a different one several miles away after shipping, no problems, no delays. Where I live my wine spends much less time in a truck when I send to a Fedex location and has been travelling the last leg, which has been unrefrigerated in the past summer months, overnight arriving at the air conditioned store by 9am. I’m sure this varies throughout the country but it works well here in WNY.
GREAT TIP @catcoland. I did not consider adding a Fedex Office Print & Ship Cent shipping address to my Casemates account. I just successfully added my local FedEx store. THANKS @catcoland
Well, it appears I wasted a lot of time composing my comments. Thanks to catcoland my issues have been resolved:
“catcoland with Winedavid49 rjquillin sammypedram
GREAT TIP catcoland. I did not consider adding a Fedex Office Print & Ship Cent shipping address to my Casemates account AS AN ADDITIONAL ADDRESS. I just successfully added my local FedEx store. THANKS catcoland”
I would still like to see billmort’s idea adopted. Having the OPTION BOX available would serve as an excellent reminder to select my HOLD AT option. My fear is, now that Casemates has me drinking so much wine, I might forget to choose my alternative FedEx store shipping address.
Wine Woot. Perhaps I was a bit vague/lazy. “Failed” may have been the wrong word. It was terminated. There must have been a reason. Could have been related to the acquisition of Whole Foods, or could have been from unprofitably for a variety of reasons, or both.
@jeffreywsnyder We’ve been given to understand that it was the former rather than the latter. If it hadn’t been profitable there, it seems unlikely snapster would have gone into business with WD again here.
@InFrom@jeffreywsnyder@Winedavid49@rjquillin A flash sight that shall not be named that starts with a W has built in the “Hold at Location” option. But they also hold shipping for any date you want. For example I bought wine there yesterday for shipping on October 1. The HAL option is convenient, saves me doing the work, but it doesn’t solve the problem of shipping in heat. And it, HAL also doesn’t affect delivery day, they just deliver it to hold location instead of me.
The first rule of New Jersey Casemates is that we don’t talk about NJ Casemates… unless we discuss splitting a case of Harvest Moon zin! Who wants in? @kelaiem@seeds
@kelaiem the little vineyards band blend we split was zin based (40% Zinfandel, 22% Syrah, 13% Petite Sirah, 9% Cabernet Franc, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, 4% Barbera)
@radiolysis@Winedavid49 I’m getting in on that also. I work for a major Airline and I haven’t shipped to work yet. Not sure if that would be okay. Would have to ask our shipping department. Worth a try though since FedEx gets here early in the morning. Second choice is a Walgreens near work. Working very well.

@losthighwayz Interesting comment. My notes from a bottle we had last year say “cork smell was a bit weird” and overall we weren’t that impressed.
Aerators…ugh. Sorry just not a fan 99.9% of the time.

@kaolis Just curious… Why not a fan of aerators? Still getting into when it is best to decant/aerate/drink straight from the bottle.

@raccoon81 WOW! That’s what we are worried about up in DFW/North Texas. Have you poured any? Hopefully no issues?

@billmort @Winedavid49 Do as I; just set your delivery address to, in your case, Kinko’s.
Done deal.
I use a FedEx office location.
@billmort As RJ said,
Set your shipping address to a fedex office location and there’s never a need to re-route.
@billmort @CorTot @rjquillin Will they really allow that? Seems if it is shipped to Walgreens with my name on it that could cause some confusion.

I would still like to see billmort’s idea adopted. Having the OPTION BOX available would serve as an excellent reminder to select my HOLD AT option. My fear is, now that Casemates has me drinking so much wine, I might forget to choose my alternative FedEx store shipping address.
@billmort @jeffreywsnyder @Winedavid49
This statement caught my eye, and I wondered what you meant by it. Are you taking about wine.woot, or woot in general?
@billmort @InFrom @Winedavid49
@InFrom @jeffreywsnyder oh, yea it was whole foods.
@billmort @jeffreywsnyder @rjquillin @sammypedram @Winedavid49 Casemates holds the last used shipping address as the default so if you ship to Fedex once you don’t need to make a choice till you want to ship somewhere else.
@billmort @catcoland @rjquillin @sammypedram @Winedavid49
@ Billmort: Are you a Casemates employee? Are you commenting on behalf of Casemates?
@catcoland @jeffreywsnyder @rjquillin @sammypedram @Winedavid49 I have no idea how my name got dragged into a discussion about Wine.Woot’s demise. However I do wonder why WD has remained silent about tha Hold at Location discussion.
@billmort @catcoland @jeffreywsnyder @rjquillin @sammypedram @Winedavid49
I think its because its not possible.
@InFrom @jeffreywsnyder oh, i’m listening.
@billmort @jeffreywsnyder @Winedavid49 would you consider changing jobs?( WD, would you hire this wine lover ?)
@InFrom @jeffreywsnyder @Winedavid49 @rjquillin A flash sight that shall not be named that starts with a W has built in the “Hold at Location” option.
@InFrom @jeffreywsnyder @Winedavid49 Jeffrey’s pilot gig sounds pretty good. Now I would consider trading for that…
The first rule of New Jersey Casemates is that we don’t talk about NJ Casemates… unless we discuss splitting a case of Harvest Moon zin! Who wants in? @kelaiem @seeds
@hscottk It’s been a while since I’ve had a Zinfandel. I’d be down for 2 bottles.
@hscottk @kelaiem I could take 3, but if someone else wants more I don’t need them.
@kelaiem @seeds Sounds good. I will buy a case.
@kelaiem the little vineyards band blend we split was zin based (40% Zinfandel, 22% Syrah, 13% Petite Sirah, 9% Cabernet Franc, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, 4% Barbera)
@hscottk ah that’s right and I really enjoyed it Syrah is one of my favorites

Trusting the shipping method. And really liked the Harvest Moon Pinot so taking the risk.
Split a case with my neighbor. Dangerous but worth the risk!
If any San Diegans want some bottles, my coworker and i would be happy to share.

@radiolysis another coworker sighting!
@Winedavid49 coworkers need wine too.
@radiolysis Coworkers make GREAT Casemates. it’s the logistics geek in me.
@radiolysis @Winedavid49 I’m getting in on that also. I work for a major Airline and I haven’t shipped to work yet. Not sure if that would be okay. Would have to ask our shipping department. Worth a try though since FedEx gets here early in the morning. Second choice is a Walgreens near work. Working very well.
