2017 Hawley Viognier, Mendocino County Gold Medal, Mendocino County Fair Gold Medical, Orange County Fair
This 2017 Viognier is sourced from the Nelson Vineyard in Mendocino County. The Nelson family has been farming their ranch for over 65 years using sustainable practices. The ranch sits along the Russian River and benefits from warm days and cool, foggy nights to produce ripened fruit with balanced acidity.
A bouquet of clean citrus and honeysuckle greet you in the glass. A smooth and supple mouthfeel with flavors of juicy mandarin orange, stone fruit, and green apple lead to a finish that boasts a bright acidity. This is a Hawley flagship varietal and a perfectly enjoyable glass of wine!
Hawley Winery and Vineyards is located near Healdsburg, overlooking the Dry Creek Valley. John Hawley started the winery in 1996, after 20 years of winemaking at some of California’s most influential wineries. Today, John and his two sons, Paul and Austin Hawley, produce unique wines from their certified organic vineyards and select Sonoma County grapes.
We craft nine different wines at Hawley Winery, although more than half of them are less than 500 cases. Producing only 3,000 cases annually, we enjoy the freedom of our small family winery to make a variety of wines and styles. Making wines in small lots from select vineyards allows us to capture the character of a vineyard and a vintage, the terroir. We enjoy crafting small lots of unique wines that express our Sonoma County vineyards.

Ooooo, likely going to have to get some of this. Or maybe some more of this. I might have one in my wine club shipment. Will check during the day. Love Hawley Wines!
@bahwm@ddeuddeg@klezman
How so?
I do that frequently, close to all-the-time.
Here, I’m paying for this, ship it ‘here’.
Never had an issue or question asked.
@AUSTINHAWLEY@osiris3mc@TimW Austin not sure you will get this but we thoroughly enjoyed the case we ordered. I have one bottle left and am about to cry. How can I get more???
We focus on our estate and Sonoma County fruit but there are some nice vineyards up in Mendo. This is coming from a vineyard in hopland along the Russian River.
I got the wonderful privilege of being selected as a Lab Rat for this fantastic offering. Quarantining has had me on the Casemates website more often than before, particularly as my more common source of wine… my brother, wife and parents joined me in tasting this offering. Now onto the good stuff.
Cork was intact. Poured five small amounts of the Hawley Viognier into Cabernet glasses. Bouquet was primarily stone fruit and lemon grass. On first taste noticed a buttery texture, honeysuckle with Balanced acidity and minerality and a long finish with apricot and green apple. I was extremely impressed rather quickly and started gathering the thoughts of my companions on the wine. My wife picked up green apple, Citrus and Minerality. My brother picked up the stone fruit. Parents just said it was fantastic, and said it tasted like a very expensive white. After tasting, I would have priced around mid 20’s or low 30’s per bottle, due to the structure, balance, and butteriness that more expensive whites tend to command.
This wine is dry, and its structure reminds me a bit of some of my favorite Sauvignon Blancs more than most Viogniers.
Fantastic value! I’m already in for a case
P.S. I looked at the notes and gave my wife and self a pat on the back for the tasting notes vs what we were able to taste!
Finally able to give an update: No 2017 Hawley Mendocino Viognier in house. It was first as a Mother’s Day Special to Wine Club Members in April though. We do have an '18 Estate Viognier on hand. Maybe we’ll open it tomorrow. We’ll see. It just won’t work with ddeuddeg’s Shepherd’s Pie tonight.
@bahwm It’s tomorrow now, and we did, in fact, open that '18 Estate Viognier. It was sublime. Beautiful stone fruit and melon and citrus. Dry Creek, though, not Mendocino. No matter, every drop of wine that comes from Hawley is wonderful. Ordered a half case last night. If we’d waited to taste this, we might have ordered a case. As someone else said here, “how you gonna go wrong with a good Voignier.”
Pairing this wine with Holy Diver is pretty appropriate considering that CD is stuck in the winery trucks player and Dio is on constant rotation in the cellar.
@AUSTINHAWLEY Man. It’s so hard to find that here in a San Diego. There is no better fish that comes out of the ocean than pacific king salmon. When it does show up down here, I buy it every week.
I used to fish out of Half Moon Bay every season when I lived in the Bay Area.
@rjquillin Maybe one day when the world is normal…
Wish I had some of this when I got my fish delivery this last week. Got some killer opah (and ahi) fresh off the boat that would have been perfect with this.
I forgot to add the food pairing notes to my earlier post. This wine can be enjoyed on its own, but we paired with with breaded pan seared cod with tomato garlic beurre blanc and arugula salad. Went great

Hawley Viognier was my aha moment with wine back in 2011 or thereabouts. If there was a single reason I started drinking wine on the regular it was that tasting. I haven’t tried this effort out of Mendocino county, but I trust it’s great.
This is one of my favorite wines, and I’ve been grumped that my local market hasn’t had it as they’ve cut their wine buys back during the recent troubles, so super excited to see it here at such a great price and even better with my Pasta Drop coupon!

John is a winemaking acquaintance and I have always enjoyed his wines. I have been making wine off the Nelson vineyard since 1998. Our dry Riesling and Eis Wine are both from this vineyard. Viognier is a difficult grape to work with. Like Zinfandel, it is an uneven ripener and hard to get the picking time right. I have not had much luck with it in Amador county. The Nelson Vineyard located in much cooler Mendocino county does a much better job with the variety. Austin, say hello to your Dad. I noticed this wine was made in stainless. Did it go through Malo/Lactic?
@ScottHarveyWine
Thanks for the input Scott I will Let my Dad know. Medocino is a warmer climate and getting this varietal ripe is important. Thus, you can see slightly higher alcohols in viogniers compared to other white wines. This wine did not go though Malo, but did get some aged in neutral oak for a few months before bottling.
I don’t know what’s going on, but this “shelter in place” “hunker down” “work from home (at our basement bar” is not doing my credit card any favors. I was holding out until these last reviews. PLUS we’re in the midst of 5 in flight deliveries. My UPS guy is already walking up to the door just smiling quietly to himself, and that’s with two more incoming this week. Ack! What the heck, in for a case to add to the growing 4 high stash of CM buys in the ‘hidden room’ in the basement.
And how you gonna go wrong with a good Viognier?
/giphy dusty-burnt-lake
@benguin986
Pretty much the same here. 13 cases since our shelter in place” began. Our 21 year old son told me I have a wine problem; not a drinking problem, but a buying problem. I told him, look on the bright side, it may be your inheritance!
@benguin986@pseudogourmet98 For the Pedroncelli Rose from Meh, UPS stopped by and left a door tag without knocking loudly enough for us to hear or for getting a functioning doorbell. Sigh.
@klezman@pseudogourmet98 Our Ped Rose should be showing up today, I’ll be watching it closely on the live tracker. On a related note, for our Anne Amie that was delivered on Friday, I was on a work Skype and almost missed getting to the door on time- as a result, that shipment still shows as ‘sorry we missed you, will attempt 2nd delivery’.
@dodgerBlue@Unifer@AUSTINHAWLEY@Winedavid49
Received my order on May 28 so sooner than expected. In styrofoam. Bottles arrived after 12 hours in the truck. Slightly cool to the touch.
I’m not a white drinker, but have been trying to expand my horizons. I’ve had the Hawley reds and with the great reviews, thought this may be one to try. Just cracked open the first bottle after letting them rest for two days. An ever so slight hint of sweetness. uh oh. What have I done? Is this going to the mother-in-law? Keep in mind, I do not drink wine chilled unless it’s 105 and I’m out on a patio so this was close to 65. I like to taste the full flavor. That’s just me.
Next tried with dinner. Not so great with the wasabi ginger soy glazed sablefish. After dinner, I usually have cheese. I don’t like sweets. I decided to cut a slice of the Farmstead Bay Blue from Point Reyes that was offered on Gourmet.woot a few weeks ago and see how that pairs with the wine. Wow. Amazing!!! I’ve now finished almost 3/4 of the bottle. The wine is Fantastic with this cheese. For anyone who ordered the Point Reyes offering and this Hawley, I highly recommend the combo. This may make me a white drinker yet. Thank you Hawley and Winedavid. Delicious!

Is this dry? What’s the RS?
@TimW I second the questions!
@osiris3mc @Timw
This is Austin Hawley, winermaker for hawley winery. This is a dry Viognier. It has a ton of tropical fruit.
@AUSTINHAWLEY @TimW hearing from the wine maker is such a delight. I’m sold. Thanks Austin! Can’t wait to get my case!
@AUSTINHAWLEY @osiris3mc @TimW Austin not sure you will get this but we thoroughly enjoyed the case we ordered. I have one bottle left and am about to cry. How can I get more???

Hope @winedavid49 gets us some winery participation.

I’m seriously interested in some rattage. The tasting notes don’t seem to indicate a flavor profile that I normally associate with Viognier.
@sandbarhappy Agreed. Honeysuckle, sure. Citrus and green apple, though?

Why have we not pulled corks?
@AUSTINHAWLEY what is the PH and TA? Any RS? Cases produced? Alcohol seems a bit high at 14.2 any background? Thank you!
@AUSTINHAWLEY @losthighwayz What makes it high? Seems normal to me given a quick look online.

Just out of curiosity what is a “Gold Medical, Orange County Fair”
@collegebob I’m assuming this wine would be excellent for medicinal purposes as well.
Love Hawley Viognier! It’s one of my fav Viogniers out there. Definitely worth purchasing.
No Michigan? Any chance a change in mind to ship here? I know many other wines from Casemates do 🥺

Looks to have been pretty quiet on visible replies.
I’d take 3~4 if you end up getting a case.
@rjquillin
Sadly, forgot to check back in time.
Bright side, I don’t have to find non-existent room now.
@MarkDaSpark I well understand both of those events.
Gosh darn it casemates… Seven cases in four weeks… Smh. Need to start digging a new cellar in the basement and looking for a second job
@hidden1 thanks for posting, I felt that I was pushing it with four cases in four weeks…
Look at it this way if it helps…
Better to use the Stimulus money on American casemates and wine, than buying a made in China TV…
