Our Petite Sirah displays a dark magenta and violet hue with aromas of light clove, black current and cocoa. On the palate this wine is full and rounded with lush ripe blackberry and a touch of cinnamon.
Vintage and Winemaker Notes
The Vineyards
This Petite Sirah is carefully grown in the Chalk Hill region located in the northeast Russian River Valley. These grapes are exposed to warmer days and cool nights on our familyās Los Amigos Ranch, just south of Healdsburg. The unique weather of this area allows the grapes to ripen slowly and develop rich, complex flavors.
The Growing Season
2015 was an exceptionally good year for growing grapes inthe Russian River Valley. Coming into the 4th year of drought we expected lower yields but the weather cooperated with a steady temperature and a punch of heat in the end causing the fruit to ripen slowly, ensuring maximum flavor development. This was our earliest harvest to date.
The Winemaking
Our Petite Sirah is aged for up to 17 months in a combination of European and American oak. It contains 15% Zinfandel and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon in addition to the Petite Sirah to enhance the structure of this exquisite wine.

@mwfielder Thank you for inquiring on this. We are a smaller producer and this is a wine that is typically only found direct from the winery. I am happy to answer any questions about the Petit Sirah or the winery. I hope you give it a try and get to know our product!
@handldevin@rjquillin Heās with the crew. We met Devin last year during a tasting and he was fantastic. Hopefully we gave him good suggestions for his trip to San Diego. But thatās beside the point.
@rjquillin Hi! I have worked for Hook & Ladder Winery for over a decade. I started in the cellar moved on to hospitality and direct to consumer sales. I am now the National Sales Manager.
@radiolysis O whaaaaaat! I remember you! You gave amazing recommendations. We had an great time in San Diego. That was our first time away from our daughter. We now have another little one so it will be a couple years before our next trip outā¦ Lmk when you come back out to Sonoma County. Hope you enjoy this offer.
Back again for round 2. The Monkey actually gave up two bottles in our struggle, the second being the Hook & Ladder 2015 Los Amigos Ranch Petite Sirah from Chalk Hill in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County. Assuming this is a new release, I appreciate the extra time they gave this wine to age before selling it. SWMBOās massive allergy attack didnāt allow her to taste or comment, unfortunately, so youāre stuck with just my notes.
I love red wines, but Iām probably not as big a fan of Petite Sirah as many others on this site and the old one. I am not a PSith Lord by any stretch. I have liked many PSās, but havenāt been blown away by any. Favorites of mine have included Vina Robles from Paso Robles, Jaffurs from Santa Barbara, Vincent Arroyo and Bell from Napa, CG di Arie from the Sierra Foothills, and Turley from about anywhere. I have never had a PS from outside of California; Iām not even sure Iāve ever seen one in a store.
On to the wine. The composite cork was stained darkly in the lowest 1/16", but was otherwise pristine. The alcohol is moderate - just 14.2%. In the glass, it was suitably dark purple with clear ruby highlights. On the nose, I could pick out blueberry, cedar notes, and a little grape candy (Halloween hangover on my part?). It was medium bodied, with lots of plums and boysenberries, mint, woody tannins that didnāt really show until the back of the palate, some pepper, and a bit of smoke. Finally, it had a tangy, slightly dry, medium to long finish. Over 3 days of being open, more fruit came out, but I found it to be a bit sappy/syrupy.
I enjoyed this with food more so than on its own, especially on the first 2 nights. My impression is that this is darkly fruited like a PS should be, but lacks the brawny tannins I would normally expect. I think it can be easily enjoyed as a ādrink nowā wine, and as an introduction to the darker spectrum of red wines.
Wow! This is great! Thank you so much for the feedback and we are really glad you enjoyed the wine. Our Chalk Hill PS does often feature a little lighter tannin and is very drinkable now. This would be a great option for upcoming holiday functions etc.
I visited H&L back in 2005ish, brought back several bottles of theirs on the plane back when you could do such things. Iāve always liked their wines, I see their Merlot & Cab here in Florida every so often. No PS in my current collection of boxes, so what the hell, in for a case!
@knotworking Those were the daysā¦ wine on the plane. Thank you for revisiting us on this deal. We hope to see you out here again. It sounds like you are due for a trip!
Lab rat checking in, late, unfortunately.
Initial pop n pour: nice red color; not brick, not purple. On the nose, I got plum, and a bit of dried plum. Also got a whiff of what I would name as stone. Initial taste also reinforced the plum, as well as a bit of something darker. Finish was long, and pleasant.
After letting air out, the nose is more pronounced, and trending more towards the dried plum spectrum. Taste is the same, however my gums did feel a bit dried out, so there is some astringency.
I think H&L was my first purchase back in the old woot days. Was very pleased with most of the wine. Despite becoming a bit more commercial Iāve still been happy with most of their stuff and try to visit when in the area.
Unfortunately still on a wine buying hold due to the huge amount left from my wedding, otherwise would be on this!
@deadlyapp Very cool! We love that we were you first woot purchase. Congratulations on the wedding and we look forward to getting you out to the winery again soon!
I really enjoyed the H&L mixed case I ordered back in 2011. I think it was the PN that I really loved, and we enjoyed The Tillerman as well. Not so much of a PS drinker, so I will sit this one out, in hopes of a future offer on the lighter side of things.

@MarkDaSpark haha! My apologies. Typing fast.
Aargh! Was going to buy the 3 bottle set, but then thought Iād see if anyone else wanted part of a case ā¦ and forgot to ask (or buy the 3, even!).

Can anyone spare 2 or 3 bottles?
