Complex aromas of boysenberry and earth, it is rich and velvety on the palate and finishes with fine tannins and balanced acidity.
A gulpable blend of Carignane, Syrah, Petite Sirah and Grenache. We ferment each lot separately, then barrel select our favorites for the blend. The resulting wine is rich, full-bodied, and velvety. Perfect with grilled foods!

Horse & Plow Winery merges the best of old and new world techniques to produce authentic, hand-crafted wines from Northern California.
We started Horse & Plow in 2008 to merge the best of old and new world techniques and produce authentic, hand-crafted wines. Together, we draw on our different backgrounds and talents to craft original wines from organic grapes. We utilize organic farming, small lot fermentations and traditional techniques to make balanced, food friendly and site specific wines.
Our organic vineyards dot the North Coast of California; including Sonoma, Napa & Mendocino Counties. We work exclusively with growers who are committed to superior quality by using certified organic and/ or biodynamic techniques. These sustainable practices allow us to craft wines with greater complexity and sense of place, while caring for worker health and the environment.
Organic doesn’t stop when the grapes get to the winery- our wines are made naturally with no synthetic nutrients or additives, no GMO’s, are vegan and contain low sulfites. Most importantly, we make great wine! From crisp whites to rich reds, we have a wine to please every palate!

Labrat checking in April 16th 2024. Not a mystery offer. OR IS IT!!! (it’s not)…
The look:
Honestly, the cork scarred me. Not like that polterguist clown, but you know what I mean.
Light ruby.
The nose: Boysenberry, dried red fruit, violet. Does not smell like horses, or plows.
The Taste/aftertaste: Carignane? No, it’s a pullover, but thanks for noticing.
It’s on the bolder side with respectable acidity that makes it more intense than the smell of it and stiff balances with the tanins. Plum, Boysenberry, the after taste has notes of light cedar lingering. To me, this is one of those meal wines you have with a dinner you made with stuff you were saving for a special occasion, and hope there’s a bottle left to have by a fireplace after.
Sorry about the dirty glass.
The wrapup:
I’m guessing this is $20/bottle.
The bonus round : You can arrange the letters in “Horse Plow Draft Horse Red” to spell “Horror Herded A Flew Spots”. Do with that what you will.
@ecue@rjquillin maybe a couple Crown preamps? A compressor/limiter in the mix? I imagine we’re only seeing a fraction of the equipment.
Love the red blend also
@rjquillin@ttboy23 The black one behind the bottle is a custom Federal Compress/Limiter clone. Below that is a 500 series Neve mic pre. To the right of that, top to bottom are some Groove Tubes mic pres, then some Sontec channel strips (4 of 24 that were ever made). At the very bottom is a Moog parametric EQ. When I’m not Labratting, I’m audio engineering.
@ecue@ttboy23 Thanks for fleshing that out!
Those are sure taking me back to a few earlier lives. I first started working in a studio in Indy in the mid to late 60’s. Continued in audio at UCSD music department in SoCal until mid 90’s or so; then astrophysics. The electrons don’t care…
@rjquillin #skkrtskkrtttt, as the kids say these days.
I have a pair of Level Devils. One I got insanely cheap from a church that didn’t like the word “devil” on it. I also have one of the 500 series Retros at the non-home-studio. It was pretty easy to find the Sta Levels in LA on the cheap (around $500 per) back in the day, but I kinda think Larrabee popularized them.
@ecue@rjquillin Love how conversations here can (d)evolve into audio equipment, or almost anything else for that matter. Also enjoyed the Carignane pun (took me a few seconds to figure out) and story of the Devil of good deal from the church.
How much more are you saving by buying a full case?

2019 Horse & Plow Draft Horse Red - $30 = 23.07%
I was caught off guard when this showed up last Wednesday; at first I thought I was going to be LATE to post a review, but instead I had enough time to almost FORGET my review.
The Draft Horse Red has a handsome textured label, and pours an enticing ruby red in the glass. I was at the tail end of a cold so my sniffer was slightly impaired. Still, I got tantalizing hints of cherry and blackberry. Each sip was smooth and complex and had a medium finish with few lingering tannins. We got more muted cherry notes, as well as black pepper.
Dinner was a mixed grill of sausage (braut and mild Italian) and cajun marinated chicken, plated with crispy shredded potatoes (aka tater tots). The Draft Horse held up well to the fatty, spicy, and salty foods.
This is a great balanced blend: flavorful and easy drinking, with enough going on that it doesn’t feel like a waste of time. There were no traces of chemical shortcuts that you often find in inexpensive wine.
I would happily drink this with a nice meal, or afterwards around a fire pit, and would not hesitate to take to a party or serve to company. $99 for a case is a great price.
Happy Hump Day! (Aren’t all days Hump Days anymore… ha!)
Wine Enthusiast opined:
87 points. This balanced blend is fit for any casual occasion. It offers cheerful notes of red cherry, plum, currant, grape jelly, chocolate and licorice alongside a coarse tannic texture and modest acidity. — Stacy Briscoe. 12/1/23
As far as that 90 point Spectator review mentioned above, sorry to report that was for the 2018, not this 2019 being offered. Darn!
The 2014 was part of a mixed 6-pack offer on w**t December ‘15. I recall liking them quite a bit but hey that was almost 10 years ago…

Hi! Just double checking there’s no MO, just because it’s unusual. Thanks!
@chemvictim that is unusual! MO is on the list seems like 99% of the time.
@chemvictim @TimW Never hurts to tag @Winedavid49 in such an inquiry.

@ecue there has to be some sort of a back story on the classic rack in the background of the first pic
@ecue @rjquillin yah, nice rack!
@ecue @ttboy23 yeah, but what’s in it?
That one red one looks like old HP or GR vintage.
@ecue @rjquillin maybe a couple Crown preamps? A compressor/limiter in the mix? I imagine we’re only seeing a fraction of the equipment.
Love the red blend also
@ecue @ttboy23 having owned a few Crowns, I’m not seeing something that looks like a candidate

@ecue
Ever hear of or see a Gates SA-39?
Got one of those residing in the bottom of an audio rack out in the garage. My, has this appreciated in cost!

@ecue @pmarin @rjquillin Though I think it would be good to develop some shorthand way to say “Let’s take this off topic conversation to the pub”
@pmarin @rjquillin agreed but no one else was talking about anything (at all) so…

Need a new, easy drinking table wine and the rats sold me on it. In for a case
