Dutch “licorice” is nothing like the “red vines, black vines” sweet chewy candy we have in the U.S. there are all sorts of varieties and shapes and flavors in the Dutch versions, often not sweet at all, salty, offensive, fairly disgusting if you are not used to them. One of the only consumable items where “hint of ammonia” can be a desirable taste (along with some types of white wine).
