Fresh-cut sage and a bit of smoke on the nose. The red wine blend opens with unassuming black cherry and dark plum. Its deep, dark fruits are complemented by cardamom spice, dark chocolate, and a delicate herbaceous finish.
The Vineyard
The vineyard at J Dusi Winery is located in the Templeton Gap AVA. This vineyard was planted specifically for the J Dusi Wine program with a vast selection of wine varietals to create a “spice rack” for winemaker Janell Dusi. These vines are farmed for fewer pounds per plant to ultimately create a high-quality product. This vineyard was planted in 2013 and is farmed by the Dusi Family.
Winemaking
Janell Dusi is the proprietor and winemaker, specializing in Zinfandel. She is a 4th generation farmer who is the first of the family to go beyond farming to produce wines from the Dusi Vineyards. She honors her heritage by making wine in the most native form: handpicking, hand sorting, and stomping her wines by foot. Her signature style is continued with non-invasive wine handling and gentle barrel aging. A combination of new French and American oak, juvenile barrels are rounded out with neutral barrels to create wines that respect and reveal the natural varietal characteristics.
Bringing J Dusi into the public realm of the wine industry has been a lifelong dream for me. I grew up living on the vineyard, participating in grape farming, and begging for my Grandfather to teach me the winemaking process.
My first vintage was when I was sixteen. My Grandfather guided me through the process from the recollection of the days when his family ran the original “Dusi Winery” back in the '50s. I learned, from him, the REAL Italian way to make wine, which happened to be a slight variation of today’s California-style wines.
My Great-Grandparents, Sylvester and Caterina Dusi settled into Paso Robles in the early twenties. They had three sons; Guido, Dante, and Benito Dusi. They were active proprietors in many local businesses including vineyards, farming, restaurants, and Dusi Winery. I was born and raised in the vineyard that my Grandfather Dante, his father, and two brothers planted in 1945. As vineyards were rare in the area at that time, Zinfandel was the Italian varietal of choice. They implemented the farming practices of head-pruned vines and no irrigation, dry farming. Today, 65 years later, we still carry on their farming traditions and uphold one of the area’s most loved vineyards. Dusi grapes can be found in some of the most sought-after Zinfandels in Paso Robles.

2021 J Dusi The Other Brother Red Blend - $100 = 33.32%
Paging Ken, paging Ken…his Wine Guide and Tasters say…
Very Good+ (93). August 13, 2023
This almost black colored Petit Verdot based blend from J. Dusi opens with a mild black currant and boysenberry bouquet with sandalwood, mocha, cedar, and hyacinth. On the palate, this wine is full bodied with integrated medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is balanced, smooth, mouth-coating, and rich. The flavor profile is multi-layered featuring a mocha, boysenberry, and smoky oak blend with notes of black plum. We also detected some hints of English toffee, black cherry, and a touch of espresso. The finish is dry, and its flavors and well-managed tannins are nicely extended. The Tasting Panel would serve this red blend with a New York strip steak or with burnt ends. Enjoy – KWGTP
Hello and here’s my take on the J. Dusi 2021 The Other Brother, a tannat and verdot blend.
I got the bottle on a Friday so was able to let it relax over the weekend before tasting Monday.
It pours a lovely inky dark purple. The nose is a warm and muted berry with just enough booze on the nose to not be overpowering.
Very full bodied, velvety, with some acidity on the back end. The main flavors I picked up were a rich dry blueberry and blackberry. After about an hour it opened up into juicy black cherry.
This is a great bottle of wine and maybe the best one I’ve had the opportunity to rat.
Good morning Casemateers!
I was fortunate enough to recived a bottle of this late last week and was able to try it over a couple of nights.
2021 J. Dusi - The Other Brother
Blend of Petite Verdot & Tannat
15.2% alcohol
Petite Verdot is not sold very often as a single varietal wine because its more often used as a blending component because of its inky dark coloring. Tannat is even less popular but also tends to be used in blends and is also known for deep color and also tends to be full of tannin as well. So its a blend I have not had before which made this fun for me.
The wine was opened Friday night and the cork came out with minimal penetration, The wine poured very dark, nearly black/purple. The wine appeared to be clear of sediment.
Its got a strong/powerful nose full of black fruit, mostly very juicy black cherry, some currant. There was not noticeable oakiness or much alcohol on the nose.
The wine is very dry and i would say heavy on the palate, smooth acidity medium drying tannins were present. based on the nose and initial weight of the wine I would have assumed a very tannic finish but that’s not how it came across to me. Very strong flavor profile, juicy dark fruit, oak was not noticeable, a bit of alcohol in the finish. This is definitely a modern styled wine, good with strong flavored foods like bbq or a steak.
I had stored 1/2 the wine in a 375ml bottle with a screw top, i was able to revisit the wine Tuesday night. Very similar, it had lost very little intensity with the multi day storage, more pronounced currant and maybe a bit of plum was the noticeable differences.
Overall, I would say I enjoyed this wine, I like a variety of different profiles in red wine and this was delicious without being completely bonkers over the top. It didn’t feel like an oak bomb which can happen at times with heavier wines. I’d call it a solid buy.
Looks really interesting and I like J Dusi reds but have too much wine (in house and on way) - would have done a 2fer (or 3fer or 4fer) if the incentive had been better - looks as though they are mainly interested in shifting cases! Need to find a Casemate in Fairfield County CT!
I have really enjoyed a number of J Dusi blends in the past but have never tried this one. It looks like a great buy at the case price, but I don’t have space for a case. Anyone in SF or nearby Bay Area interested in a split? I’d like no more than four bottles so ideally looking for a three way or four way. Any takers?
@rjquillin Yes! These are two varieties we grow on the winery property and after bringing these in at harvest and cellaring… I found at blending that these two varieties came together beautifully and was such a different composition and structure than my other Zinfandel based blends.

@CorTot
Specs call this out as 14.5% AbV.
The bottle is labeled differently?
@rjquillin yes.
Bottle was tossed but I wrote down 15.2 in my notes.
Any interest in a SoCal split?
Don’t need or have room for a full case…
@rjquillin I would take 3.
@CorTot can they come your way?
@rjquillin only buy if its a real split. If its 3 for me and 9 for you then don’t bother.
@rjquillin I found a 3rd. we can split it 3 ways, you can send it here.

Anyone in the North Atlanta Metro interested in a 50/50 split? I am just so overloaded right now with half my BD wine still on the way.

I love J Dusi wines! Have no room for another case either but if the 2021 is as good as the 2020 case then I got lucky I bought this case
@dawnlac Awesome and I like the 2021 even better!
POPSOCKETS! SPROCKETS! DAVY CROCKETT! AWESOME!

@rjquillin Yes! These are two varieties we grow on the winery property and after bringing these in at harvest and cellaring… I found at blending that these two varieties came together beautifully and was such a different composition and structure than my other Zinfandel based blends.
