This refreshing wine has been made by winemaker Scott Harvey in honor of his wife Jana. This unoaked Sauvignon Blanc is made in a dry style to fully express both the Lake County terroir and the Sauvignon Blanc grape variety.
This non oaked, malolactic Sauvignon Blanc shows varietal hints of melon and citrus. The grapes were picked when ripe but not over ripe producing a balanced enjoyable wine that goes well with food while not overpowering it. Cantaloupe and honeydew melon with a light citrus note blend together to make a full bodied and rich Sauvignon Blanc.

Sounds interesting. I love cantaloupe but the only time I have detected that flavor in a wine it was a Pinot Grigio. I also like the somewhat creamy mouthfeel and fuller body that the malolactic fermentation should impart. Hope to hear from some rats on this.
Sadly, I had to drop my Scott Harvey wine club membership after 7 or 8 years (the only wine club I’ve ever belonged to) due to Covid related loss of income for my wife (and to a lesser extent myself) and Scott and Jana both reached out to me (as did the club manager) and were so very gracious and kind.
Of course, if you know Scott and Jana that’s exactly what you would expect but it meant a lot to me and while I hope to be in a position to renew my membership in the future, grabbing up a few bottles of Scott’s wines when they appear on Casemates is the best I can do right now.
Pending rattage, any NE OH peeps interested in this? I am willing to pull the trigger now that access points seem to be available for redirecting UPS packages. I would like 2-4 bottles, so 8-10 up for grabs.
@chipgreen With all the wine I have I’m not sure I have a single bottle of SB, which is surprising since it used to be a summer fav. After having met Jana how can I say no to wine named after her?
I was excited to be selected as a rat for this wine since Sauvignon Blancs are a summer favorite of mine. Upon receipt we popped it in the fridge to chill. We were having grilled chicken breasts and vegetables for dinner and I thought it would be a good pairing so we had a glass before dinner and one with our meal.
The wine is a pretty pale yellow in the glass and we both got aromas of melon and fruit. First taste we were surprised by the tartness because of how fruity the aroma had been,we tasted melon with some lime zest and a little grapefruit. I thought the melon notes were more like honeydew but my wife tasted cantaloupe. There was also a kind of mouthfeel that I was going to describe as minerality but maybe it is the malolactic mentioned in the description and the comments. I am sorry that I don’t know anything about it but this wine did have a kind of full-bodiedness that we both noticed. This is a very refreshing wine that keeps making you want to have another sip. It was delicious on its own and also paired well with our dinner.
Thanks to Casemates and Scott Harvey for letting us try it! As a final note, as we were drinking we both thought this would be such a good wine to share with friends. It seems like one most people would enjoy and with the stelvin closure it would be excellent to bring to summer events like concerts in the park (sadness, everybody wear your masks so we get to have summer gatherings again).
So, especially after previous recent reports of cooked wine, you can imagine how horrified I was to be pleasantly surprised to get a rat bottle only to take it out of the box/styro and feel that the bottle was warm to the touch… and a Harvey at that! And an SB! With such an interesting production story!
Thank goodness my bottle was not cooked, as I had feared.
Last bit of administrivia: We got the bottle on Wednesday the 29th, and normally would have let it sit for a few days, but we didn’t know when the deal would start and I saw that a new deal started Thursday. As a result, we decided to have it that night. That might have affected our tasting a little, but I don’t think it really hurt our impression of the wine’s quality.
The wine was a pale straw color. P&P (so to speak) straight out of our refrigerator had a very weak nose, but I suspect this was mostly because the wine was too cold. What little I could get out of the nose at this temperature was possibly weak notes of grass and bell pepper.
I decided to also try a sip while it was too cold. After all, I want to see how it changes with temperature, right? It’s all in the interests of science. I actually managed to get quite a lot from that first taste: honey, a hint of tropical fruit (passionfruit?), and an undercurrent of the green flavors typically associated with an SB. There’s also a bit of earthiness which was interesting in balance with the rest of the flavors and made for a well-rounded experience with nice complexity.
After the wine warmed up a bit, the nose became a bit more expressive, and some of the fruit came out. The green parts of the nose remained muted, which was nice since it allowed us to enjoy more aspects of the grape. The flavor profile remained the same as it was while too cold, however the flavors gained in intensity. The overall balance of the wine was unchanged. The flavors of this wine just work well together.
My wife picked up a few additional flavors, citing primarily peach, strawberry, and melon on the nose, with peach and pineapple being dominant flavors for her. After she said it I could definitely taste pineapple too. She agreed with me on honey when I said it, but she was quick to point out that it wasn’t sugary-sweet.
Another really pleasant thing we noticed in this wine was its amazing finish. All of the residual flavors were pleasing to me, and the finish lasted forever. I could take a drink, enjoy the finish for a minute or two, and then go back for another taste.
We tried it with cheese (science, right?). I had a few pieces of a couple of cheeses (a triple cream Brie, and a Tuscan soaked in PS). The Brie was way too much for it, and while the Tuscan was decent with the wine, honestly I felt like food is disappointing in comparison to this wine. This is a bottle that I will always drink on its own because I like it so much.
We are horrible at price guessing, but we guessed that this might retail between $20-25, and guessed that the CM price was likely to end up somewhere around $13. We decided we’re buying a case regardless of price, and if the price is at or under our guess we’re in for two. Two it is. Yay!
Overall, this is an exquisite SB. I think it’d make a great dry wine for people who think they only like sweet wines, and I suspect it’d be a nice “sweet” wine for people who don’t like sweet wines. SB lovers should find a lot to like in this bottle. I hope that someday I can make something in homage to my wife that is this amazing.
Thanks WCC crew for the opportunity to rat, and thanks to Scott and Jana for making amazing wines for us to enjoy!
PS - I apologize for the lack of photos. I didn’t check photo quality when I was taking them and I learned too late that my son had been playing with my phone; there were smudges on the camera and most of the photos were not worth posting.
After sober discussion we realized we still have a lot of Anne Amie, just got our order of Square Peg, and we still have some Rousseau, so in for one. I’m sad, but her logic has merit.
Can Scott confirm there is virtually none (or not detectable) p-mentha-8-thiol-3-one, the “cat piss” aromas which turn me off from so many Sauvignon Blancs?
Didn’t realize @scottharveywine had a connection with Lake County, and good to have more known winemakers sourcing from there.
Hoping there is there a story of interest that will be told of how this came to be.
@rjquillin I was buying Napa Sauvignon Blanc and the grapes where sold out from under me. I went out to check the vineyard and they had all been picked. Needless to say I was upset. So, I never bought from that grower again. The grower I get my Riesling from turned me on to the Olden Vineyard in Lake County. So, I have been getting the SB from him for the last 5 years.
Hi Everyone, Sure have been having a good time on Casemates lately and getting some great wines. This wine does not have any of the cat piss aromas. To bad, I like that, but when it is more in the fresh grass category. Lake County usually doesn’t develop it, while the Russian River does. It develops more in cooler climates. Lake County is fairly warm.
I usually don’t like to make Malo/Lactic white wines being a Riesling trained winemaker and wasn’t planning on this wine going through Malo/Lactic. But, you take what Mother Nature gives you. This wine went on its own during the alcohol fermentation. I had a Riesling about three years ago that did the same. Malo/Lactic adds a richer, almost sweet center to the wine. The wine’s nose moves from aroma to bouquet. Aroma being all those smells from the grape variety, vineyard and vintage. While bouquet is all the smells from the winemaking process, type of yeast, malo/lactic, surlees, oak aging etc.
Thanks for the wonderful labrat reports. I drove those bottles over to Casemates in Sonoma from Amador Monday morning. About a three hour drive. Good to see they made it out alright.
On another note, I said I would labrat the 2007 Maison Louis Latour Chassagne Montrachet Rouge that I bought a case of when I received it. For those of you that bought some, the labrat report is here.
Look forward to answering more questions over the next few days.
Cheers,
Scott
@ScottHarveyWine
Yes, thank you Scott & Jana. I am in for a case. Not much of a white wine drinker but hoping this is a winner. I do love some whites on occasion here in Florida during the summer & of course with seafood! Picked up a SB from Sigma Six here on Casemates that I loved so hoping they are similiar!
@klezman@ScottHarveyWine Unfortunately no but we’ll find somewhere to stash it all. Been looking at a few nice large wine locker fridges. wkdpanda & wife say hi, with whom we are splitting these
I don’t know how this is even possible that despite our stock of fantastic SH wines over the years, we have never had one of Scott’s white wines! Time to remedy that situation…

Fully malolactic? Interesting. Is that common in Sauvignon Blanc in parts of France?
@klezman Yessir, interested to hear about it. SB and malo rare as I know it to be. But then I don’t know much

Mine arrived Thursday; had some yesterday. Very pleased, glad I ordered.
Received this last week, and just decided to open one a little after midnight.
I’m not usually one for whites, but I found this quite refreshing, with a much rounder and richer mouth-feel than I anticipated. Mother Nature may have changed the preferred method of fermentation, but she certainly didn’t hurt this wine, or my enjoyment of it, in the least.
My wife and I had the privilege of meeting Mr. and Mrs. Harvey at a wine dinner in Medina Ohio last year. First, I must say they are both genuine great people who spent hours with the group enjoying the evening.
Now for the wine named after Mrs. H. We have enjoyed several bottles since receiving our shipment. (It is what recently retired people do!) True to the description the wine is smooth and balanced with melon flavors in abundance. Maybe the addition of the Riesling balances out the SB. While we enjoy the citrus taste that often accompanies this style of wine, we do not enjoy wine that is heavy on the acidic side. Our thank you to the Harvey’s for crafting such fantastic wine.
