6x 2021 Lake Sonoma Winery Rosé, Sonoma County Case:
There aren’t many places where you can grow remarkable Pinot Noir and Sangiovese in the same county. We honor the rare ability of Sonoma, home to some of the most diverse soils and microclimates on the planet. Whether it’s the Alexander Valley, Russian River, or our own Sonoma Valley backyard, we produce wines that showcase these wildly unique sub-appellations. We’re able to do so thanks to a community of meticulous growers who set us up with some of the most expressive fruit in the region. It’s part of our ongoing pursuit not only to respect, but truly taste, the terrain of Sonoma County.
With Sonoma directly in our name, we take great pride in our region and the quality of grapes planted, grown, and poured from our bottles into your glass. Five years ago Sonoma County Vintners committed to becoming the nation’s first 100% certified sustainable wine region. Today, Sonoma County is one of the global leaders in sustainable grape growing.

It’s been an incredibly hot and humid summer for many of us this year, with countless record temps for many of our fellow Casematers. Clearly, that means there should be consideration for the right wine to pair with the weather. I have to hand it to the CM crew, as they clearly knew what we needed, and rosé’d to the occasion. (sorry for the pun)
We don’t drink a lot of rosé. A quick look at patterns over the past 6 years have us at a case every 16.74 months. Favorites have been the WineSmith Grenache, Leghorn’s Rosé of Pinot Noir, and a few others. We went for light summer food pairings with this one and found it to be quite nice for the dog days of summer.
Day 1 tasting: Bottle arrived with no ill effects from the UPS journey. Chilled the bottle overnight and served at 52°. Closure is a screw top for easy opening and overnight storage. Color of the wine is a deep salmon (done in cast iron). Very light and pleasant nose of berry/floral for me. Mrs. Rat noted definite bright strawberry and melon aromas.
Taste- backed up the aromas. We both liked the blend of strawberry and melon flavors (we didn’t pick up cranberry from the description too much). Moderately dry, couldn’t find residual sugar info, but it does have a light sweetness to it. Quotes: “Not complex, but nice” and “It tastes sophisticated- good balance”.
Food pairing followed traditional rosé pairing guidance- picnic style foods. Homemade chicken salad sandwiches and homemade potato salad. Definitely a good pairing with this wine- acidity level worked really nicely. Not ideal with cantaloupe from the garden. Ideal for sitting out on the patio and finishing the bottle- but we reserved that for day 2.
Day 2: Overnight in the fridge, and served up at 53.5°. Very similar to day 1 for me. Mrs. Rat thought the strawberry flavor was a bit sweeter on her lips. She liked it, and felt it was a nice difference from other rosés. We’re not sure what varietal was used by Lake Sonoma, but it was a good choice.
Mrs. Rat thought that cooking up a lemon pudding with fresh strawberry compote might be a good match with this wine, and she was right. The flavors were very complimentary and were a great way to close out the “fresh summer picnic foods” chapter for us.
If you are fans of rosé or looking for something to serve up while enjoying the rest of the summer, definitely worth a try!

I had every intention of staying up late to post this last night since Mondays are always hell. But I didn’t.
Today has been predictably hell. I wish this bottle were still around for lunch.
Small disclaimer, I had SLIGHTY stuffy sinuses from something in the air, so take that for what it’s worth.

2021
Sonoma County Rose
Color: Pale pink with an orange tint
Nose: Honeysuckle, pineapple, alcohol
Nose from mah Wife: Lychee
Palate: Peach, tart cherry, slightly astringent, tart pucker on the finish
Feels like a low RS, not much sweetness at all, might be covered by a higher acidity
mah Wife’s eclectic palate: strawberry, cherry blossom?
“Have you eaten a lot of cherry blossoms?” “No…that’s why I thought it was weird”
Dinner had already been decreed prior to the wine appearance, so nopales tacos for her and a beef chile relleno and pastor tacos for me.
It’s not often that I notice straight alcohol as a prevalent note on the nose, it did dissipate as we left the bottle open to breathe so you may want to decant this.
The fruit notes paired well with dinner, but I would have liked it slightly sweeter and/or with a lower acidity.
Day 2:
The alcohol had left the nose and I got a little of the promised strawberry notes on the palate, but was slightly more tart.
Overall it’s an acceptable wine, and justifiable at this price point. We’re going to pass since she likes a sweeter wine and I only drink them if she needs my help to justify opening a bottle.
