Since 1791, eight generations of the Miquel family have worked the vines of their estate high in the Languedoc hills. Father to Son, harvest after harvest, they deepen their knowledge of the fickle nature of the vines that grow here and learn to work in harmony with nature. Laurent, the latest generation winemaker, combines the force of his ancestors’ wisdom with his rebellious and innovative approach to create wines with true Languedoc character. To pay tribute to his ancestries, Laurent named this range “Pere et Fils” (Father and Sons).

2020 Laurent Miquel Père et Fils Merlot - $22 = 20.75%
Received the notice from Alice early and took delivery on Tuesday.
Was able to let the bottle rest and opened it on Wednesday to taste. Screw cap which took effort to open as the collar was rotating a bit. No worries, there did not seem to be any compromise of the seal.
The wine poured a very dark purple. Initial nose was closed off with not much showing up. With a few quick swirls, I got a note of anise/black licorice and some oak, not any fruit showing up. On to the palate. This wine is dense, chewy and a mouthfeel of fruit. The anise/black licorice note is there together with black cherries, some blueberry and the oak. The finish is relatively long with the blueberries coming stronger near the end. I found very little complexity to the wine. Tannins were light but showed some astringency near the end of the finish. The simpleness of the wine made it easy to drink but left me underwhelmed as it was not interesting.
Night 2 was more fruit forward, the anise seemed to hide, the mouthfeel seemed to get more dense. The tannins have receded which makes this more fruit bomb like.
Summary is that it is a simple wine full of fruit that may be appreciated by those new to wine but the lack of complexity makes this not a buy for me.
Hi All! Labrat checking in - albeit a bit late, been a long week
I won’t bury the lead - This isn’t good. My wife is a bit less of a critic than I am and will generally drink most anything - she dumped this down the sink.
PnP strong smells of alcohol - berries - black cherry? Tobacco. Taste follows smell. Into the decanter we go…
30 minutes, 1hr, 90 minutes 2 hours.
The wine does evolve - but it doesn’t get better - you get more vanilla, some softer cherries but theres an underlying cloying sweetness here that isn’t jammy - jammy would be better. The flavors are too muddled and lack complexity.
Color - the other LR captures this perfectly but its a dark red / purple and has long thick legs (14% ABV).
Screw Top.
Even at this price I’ll have to pass.
I love this place, love Alice - someday we’ll connect on an offer! Sorry y’all. I wanted to love it… Happy Friday!
