Lab Rat review of the 2019 vintage Petaluma Gap Pinot Gris from the La Cruz vineyard
I was unable to find any previous vintages of this wine offered on casemates, but it’s always possible I just overlooked it

The cork is an artificial cork painted to look like a natural cork. (It tricked me until I got the corkscrew in and realized it wasn’t about to fall apart, so this is actually a good thing)
Normally I am not a big pinot gris/grigio fan as most implementations I have had tend to be very plain and uninteresting, but this one seems different.
The initial odor is distinctly Pinot Grigio with what I can only call a mild character, but I was pleasantly surprised when I took a sip to get a bit of a muted crisp quality with some (faint) rounded buttery malolactic properties; it gave it a bit of a sweet body with some tang at the end that lingers.
While the body of this wine is more substantive than I am used to for this varietal, it is not as much as I expect from something like a Chardonnay. I suspect that it tastes sweeter than it actually should if one only looks at the brix value (which by the way I am not privy to), but it is not a ‘sweet’ wine.
I thought it made a good pair with the noodle-heavy minestrone soup I had for dinner.

Tasting Notes
Sourced from the organically farmed La Cruz vineyard in the eastern hills of the Petaluma Gap. Whole cluster pressed and native fermentation in a combination of stainless steel and neutral French oak; some lees contact. Delicious now, but will gain richness and drink well for a few years.

That said, I suppose having a couple bottles around should Morris stop by could be prudent.
Useless info, nothing to do with this wine. I’ve had a couple of the Pinot Noir offerings. Well done and tasty in my humble but certainly in a more forward style.
