2020 Lost Toy Cellars Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley
Tasting Notes
Aromas & flavors of honeydew melon, guava nectar, grapefruit, and honeysuckle. Crisp fresh acidity with a balanced mouthfeel with a great mineral finish.
Vineyard
Volcanic rock deposits influence minerality and the diurnal fog influx provides shade to the vines & keeps fruit from over-ripening.

Lost Toy Cellars 2020 Sauvignon Blanc
Firstly, this label is pretty cool. Full of whimsy and, as the kids would say, super adorbs (do the kids say that?). I feel like I’ve seen this label on Casemates before… maybe a Cab? Either way, the wine comes from Napa, CA, and specifically Coombsville. 14% alcohol and produced and bottled by the winery.
Pouring into the glass, the wine is almost translucent, super clear, and crisp-looking.
When it comes to the smell and taste, we started it off pretty cold out of the fridge and all I noticed was cold and wet. After it warmed up we noticed hints of melon on the nose.
The front of the taste was maybe a bit of pear or green apple and the back, well here’s where I begin to hesitate. To me, it had a bitter almost astringent metallic taste, very acidic. The four of us who sampled the wine didn’t find it all that appealing. Tart was the main word we all kept coming back to, though I guess that could be minerality but I’m not sure. And as far as more notes, we really didn’t have much else to say.
Truth be told, we drink a hell of a lot more reds than whites, and this white didn’t do it for us. Hopefully, other rats out there who are into whites more will help discern the flavors better and perhaps add more helpful information to the thread.
As always, thank you Alice and WineDavid for the opportunity to try a new wine, it’s super appreciated!
@worbx yeah, I don’t know if it was acid I was sensing or alcohol mixed with a touch of heat and a metallic taste. But I agree with your review below and I wish I would’ve tried it with food.
I had the good fortune to be selected as a rat for the Lost Toy Cellars 2020 Coombsville Sauvignon Blanc.
TL;DR: a good nose, not as sharp and grassy as I personally prefer, but “quaffable” indeed; better with a meal than on its own.
From the first glass poured after opening the bottle, I get a little bit of vegetal, herbal aromas in the nose, with I think a touch of fruit behind that. There’s a little heat from the alcohol, but not much. There’s another element in there, something not quite in the other categories, that I wish I could describe better. It makes the nose a little more interesting to me, but I lack the descriptive vocabulary to put words to it, other than that it’s a little darker than the rest of what I get.
It’s a very nice light gold color in the glass. Taking a sip, the taste is brighter than the aroma, fruitier, with maybe just a hint of grassiness. The acidity I expected isn’t quite there. I wouldn’t call it “flabby,” but it doesn’t have the bite that I’ve gotten from other Sauvignon Blancs. Between that and the distinct lack of grassy notes in the nose (and mostly in the flavor), that makes this not quite the style of Sauvignon Blanc I’m looking for.
The nose opens up just a little bit as it warms up, but this never seems to be a super aromatic wine. I think it is fruitier, especially in flavor, than other Sauvignon Blancs. I do find it an easy drinker, especially chilled.
On the second day, there’s not a ton of change from yesterday. I don’t get as much aroma off the glass now, but I think I’m a little congested this evening, so it may just be that. I think I do perceive the alcohol a little more today. Also, drinking it with tacos tonight improves my impression of the flavor: this is definitely a little better with food than on its own.
Hopefully these notes help you decide. It’s not quite my preferred style, so I think I’ll pass on the offer. That said, my impression may have suffered a bit from trying to primarily evaluate it standing alone, rather than having it along with food on the first night as well.

We love this SB! It is not your standard acid bomb Napa SB. The complexity present is very indicative of the coombsville AVA.
The Coombsville AVA has an array of different volcanic soils preaent and a temperate climate. Providing different characteristics out of the Sauvignon Blanc grape. The end result is a well balanced crisp fruit forward and mineral driven finish. Picture perfect expression of the Coombsville AVA! I hope you enjoy it as much as we do! Pairs really well with any Mediterranean dish and or popcorn

@mattykillpatty Interesting! I, too, tend to drink more reds than whites (especially lately), but I found the acidity here a little lacking.

Let me put down my drink. Smart to upgrade shipping. A lot less claims with “Air” packages over ground. A+.
