@Jamileigh17 We’ve often ordered, and enjoyed, the Gruet offers. We only got to taste the Garnatxa/Monastrell one, but I’d rate it above any of the Gruet ones we’ve gotten from here, as much as I liked those. Just don’t ask me to compare it to Iron Horse.

2015 Marta Cava Brut Reserva Mixed - $30 = 19.99%
Hey everyone, long time Casemates consumer, first time lab rat. Thanks for the opportunity. The 2015 Marta Cava Brut Reserva Passio Rosado
was a nice surprise on a warm Spring day. It’s obviously (by the title) a sparkling wine, and this certainly didn’t disappoint. From the bottle I also gleaned that it’s a reserve, which, I believe means that it was aged in bottle for a minimum of 15-months (similar to a French champagne).
We’ve likely all had a very cheap brunch sparkling wine where the lack of quality of the cork and bottle is visibly apparent. Not here. The cork and bottle are of great quality, but that’s not what we’re here for is it? No, we want to make an informed decision about the juice. What you have here is a very dry, peach-complected Cava - really effervescent and tight/compact bubbles. As someone who drinks a sparkling water per day, this Cava seems more concentrated with bubbles and they’re plentiful. There isn’t any sweetness, which I loved about it. It leaned lightly tart, with hints of un-ripe pear, a tinge of pineapple, and a scintilla of peach. It’s an overall dry Cava with great zip and refreshment. I could picture myself drinking this in the Summer with delicious spicy food. Given the great deals we find on casemates, I have no doubt that this will likely come in at a stunner of a price, and I think we’ll want to pick up a case for the Summer!
BUT, since I’m not the resident sparkling/white/rose pretend-home-sommelier, let me pass the baton over to my Wife for her thoughts on this one as well:
“With it’s salmon color, lime notes and effervescent mouthfeel, It is extremely pleasing and an anywhere, anytime kind of indulgence. As you dig in, you notice very slight hints notes of pear, watermelon and lime. As it opens up, the bubbles subside slightly and the body and light tannins come through. Although you could (and should )drink this for any occasion, this wine really screams “brunch.” Paired with Eggs, chorizo, a salad with goat cheese and rich pastry, this would be the perfect counterpart and easily please a crowd.”
@lastgoodbye Thanks, now I’m leaning even more in the direction of buying. Especially since my favorite inexpensive Cava is unavailable until its purveyor is open again.
To state the obvious, since it’s in your picture and description, but still it should be stated: this review is for the Rosado, correct?
@InFrom Don’t know what your favorite inexpensive Cava is, but we’ve really enjoyed one called Stars. We’ve probably ordered it 3 or 4 times, but haven’t seen an offer for it lately. This one is even nicer, IMO, and less expensive.
@ddeuddeg There’s a local Spanish-import place, Despaña Foods, that opened a café/store downtown. We like to stop in there for tapas and a bottle of their own-branded Cava. Then on the way home we stop into their wine shop next door, and pick up a bottle or two. I think they were getting around $15 for it.
I guess I should put that all in the past tense. I have a hard time imagining myself packed into that tiny place, sharing tables with strangers.
Stars, that rings a bell. Did they have it on Last Bottle? I bought Cava there a couple of times.
Earlier this week, I received the long-awaited email that a bottle was coming our way. It arrived the next day. As soon as the box arrived, I ripped it open to find a beautifully labeled bottle of a Sparkling Rosé from the area of Penedés near Barcelona, Spain! Not only was the wine sparkling, but so was the label! There are some accents on the rose on the label—just a little on the outline that is quite beautifully and tastefully done. Oh, right, the wine: it was a 2015 Marta Passió Vintage Reserva Brut Mètode Tradicional 11.5% alc. For those of you who don’t know me, I teach Spanish and French and LOVE Spanish wines! ddeuddeg and I spent a week in Barcelona in 2013 and quickly fell in love with Cava!
ddeuddeg popped the cork and poured the wine into our glasses before dinner was ready to come to the table. This wine was a beautiful light salmon color—not your typical rosé color with tiny bubbles that lasted throughout the bottle. I will admit that I have issues with describing the nose on sparkling wine. There was just a slight bit of yeastiness on the nose and I noticed some strawberries. Upon tasting, the strawberries were definitely there, and maybe some apricot or stone fruit. It is a dry wine that appears to be sweeter. I would say that it’s the fruit that’s coming through. This is a beautifully made, well-balanced wine that can be sipped on the porch, on a picnic, or with dinner. It might have been the beautiful spring day that we had when we popped this bottle, but this wine was enchanting. You won’t be disappointed!
A bottle of Marta Cava Brut Reserva Passio Rosado arrived a few days ago, and we set out to plan a meal that hopefully would provide a good pairing. We always make it a point to get started with the wine before the food aromas mess up our perception, so we pulled the cork before we started cooking, and poured a bit. A beautiful pale salmon color in the glass, and tiny bubbles, one of those things that Joy Sterling always maintains is an important sign of a good bubbly. My first sensation on taking a sniff was peaches, sweet delicious peaches. A quick sip before getting back to dinner prep, and there were those peaches, maybe some apricots, too. A bit of a sensation of sweetness, more than I expected from a bottle labeled Brut. Nothing objectionable about it as far as I was concerned, though. Another sniff, and this time I could detect some of the yeasty aroma that I always enjoy in a sparking wine.
Dinner was something we’d usually drink Zin with, so this menu was a bit bold, but we’ll drink bubbly with just about anything, so why not? Grilled pork tenderloin marinated with lime juice, garlic, honey, cumin and some other spices, wasabi mashed potatoes, and garlic green beans. A lot of bold flavors, and this wine held up to all of them. That little hint of sweetness was just right with the fruit in the pork marinade, and it offset the spiciness in the mashed potatoes, as well. All told, this was a delicious wine, terrific by itself and with the meal. We’ve had other sparklers from this region, and enjoyed them a lot, enough to re-order, but this one was superior, in my opinion. Good with food, good for summer sipping on the deck, good for a celebration. I’d be comfortable paying as much as $20 for this wine, but WD is insisting on giving it away. We’ll take it!
EDIT: For the uninitiated, the grapes identified as Garnatxa and Monastrell in this wine are the regional names for what many of us know as Grenache and Mourvèdre.
@ddeuddeg@bahwm I was on the fence if I wanted to buy a case for summer sipping (especially since Gruet doesn’t ship to OH) but seeing both of your trusted reviews, change of plans and 2 cases heading my way!!!
@losthighwayz Not to worry. I have a strong preference for bone-dry bubbly, myself. I even like the Sauvage we get from Gruet in the offers here from time to time. As LW says, it’s the fruit.

Sounds fancy. (Anyone got a comp taste wise to the often ordered Gruet fizzys?)
@Jamileigh17 Any rats out there? Very tempting, just need some favorable comments to push me over the edge.

@ddeuddeg @mrn1 Sold out when I came back to grab it. Oh well, next time!

In for 4. Glad to see international sparkling being offered. Hopefully will bring back memories of Barcelona when I receive it!
Txakoli next!
/giphy open-meek-ogre
Oh, a sparkling that will ship to Ohio? Vivino has decent reviews. Gonna take the case leap.
Also, it looks like the winery is RAMON Canals, not Roman Canals.
/giphy mopey-harmful-quail
@lehigh yeah. I was just on that site looking at reviews, too. Seems like a solid QPR for this wine. Debating a 4-pack vs case at this point…
@vaaccess I think only question is if 2015 is too old to ‘pop’, but I’ll take the risk. Better half likes cava…
@lehigh Yes, I agree. But we’ve been enjoying bubbly wine recently So I think we could kill it off in a couple of months at most.
@lehigh @vaaccess Plenty of life left in this. I was very pleased with the freshness in a 2015.
@ddeuddeg @lehigh Thanks for the LabRat notes and mention. I’m in for a case!
/giphy luxurious-pushy-sloth
@ddeuddeg @vaaccess Gonna be some hiccing this summer, just bought a second case.
/giphy abject-bent-engine
@ddeuddeg @lehigh
LOL … don’t get me thinking I need two cases!
That said. I am a sucker for Priorat wines and while this is Barcelona…it is super close! Excited to get this to enjoy over the summer months!

The Brut:

Who knows how precise the tech sheets are though…looks like some copy/pasting going on…
…so as they say…
fwiw
@kaolis Copy that. And the tech sheet on the wine we had shows a marked difference in grape varietals from what it says on the bottle.

@InFrom Vintage Reserva Brut is what the back of the bottle says. My picture is indeed accurate and it’s the one we tasted.

@ddeuddeg @InFrom That’s the one!
@lastgoodbye thank you for the detailed report.

Looks like San Diego county grabbed some.
Any extra bottles?
@rjquillin
/giphy wordy-lovely-gerbil
@rjquillin Wow…!
/giphy Oh Face
@vaaccess And this one was tame.
Must be really good Cava!
I should get two cases.
@rjquillin lol!
I considered two for a moment. But stuck with one. I was happy to use my Pasta Drop coupon though for $10 off!
@rjquillin I’ll have what she’s having
Good rats, good bubbles. I’m in!
/giphy acceptable-unwilling-rhinoceros
Great labrats! Both are for the rosado. Hoping for rats for the other bottle since the notes mention slightly sweet which in turns worries me.
@losthighwayz
Hi Lost! Don’t let the slightly sweet worry you. It’s the fruit. This IS Brut.
@losthighwayz Not to worry. I have a strong preference for bone-dry bubbly, myself. I even like the Sauvage we get from Gruet in the offers here from time to time. As LW says, it’s the fruit.

@Ammerie Tell that to @rjquillin and Dame Helen Mirren!
/giphy intelligent-invisible-pistachio
Thanks for the convincing Rattage…in for a case…

no cases left… I guess I’m in for four. Schade.
/giphy cautious-fixated-reaction
So, @WineDavid49 and @WCCWineGirl, is that it for the cases?
Jumped on a 4-pack, while the jumpin’s good…
/giphy harmless-burly-sugarplum
@InFrom @WCCWineGirl @Winedavid49 dang. Glad I got a four pack while I could! Just saw that it’s sold out. If cases come up though, I’m in!
@InFrom @Winedavid49 Dang, those went fast. Yes, sold out.
@InFrom @WCCWineGirl @Winedavid49 That’s what happens on Fridays, if there’s good reports, and a limited quantity. Not a good idea to hesitate.
@ddeuddeg @InFrom @WCCWineGirl @Winedavid49 You two didn’t help much.
/sarcasm
Any possibility that more cases are brought forward?
Nooo! I missed this and I’m in trouble. My wife’s favorite sparkling is Cava and our honeymoon was in Barcelona
@kray05 You are not in trouble…I have a solution! Take her back to Barcelona, she’ll like that even better…probably.
@Allieroon @kray05 An excellent solution! We loved Barcelona.
Took a migraine-induced nap and missed it. Not that I have space for it anyhow…
Looks like a nice wine…would like to know where a $35 suggested retail comes from…
Where is the Brut Rat?
@rjquillin Brut is moot.
@InFrom
It was a long day of incommunicado.
Just wake me up when it’s all over…
Arrived today (just before Midwest heat wave). Hooray!
Yummy! Regret getting only one case of this!
