This is without question one of our favorite Malbec bottlings in terms of authenticity, character, and depth. Rarely do we come across a wine that communicates “place” as this does. Brilliant color, wild aromatics, rich mid-palate, incredible texture, this has it all.
Deep ruby red color with some bluish highlights. Aromas of red fruits, such as sweet plums combined with hints of vanilla and chocolate. Slightly spicy. Mouthfeel is long and gentle with soft tannins which finish in a lingering, rich aftertaste. Pair with grilled meats and pasta with red sauce.
Elaboration: Classic fermentation with prolonged maceration between 82-86 degrees Fahrenheit. Aged 12 months in second and third use French oak. Unfined and unfiltered.
Martino Wines is located in the town of Luján de Cuyo, just 20 minutes from the city of Mendoza, its winery dates from the beginning of the century, 1901. Its construction is typical of the late nineteenth century with thick adobe walls, ceilings of cane and mud cake. It was acquired by Martino Wines in 2012 and restored and later re-insured in 2013, maintaining its original structure and functionality. The winery is equipped with the highest technology to vinify the grapes from the vineyards of the most exclusive regions of Mendoza, respecting the environment and making responsible use of natural resources.
The 18.5-acre estate vineyard is situated at 3850 feet above sea level in Agrelo, a sub-district within the Luján de Cuyo appellation of Mendoza. The ungrafted Malbec vines were planted in 1942. Stylistically, Fincas Don Martino stands solidly in the old-school camp, with savory aromatics (cigar bands, polished leather, coffee) balancing floral lift.
In 2015 the winery was expanded with a new tank room, barrel room and fractionation room in order to increase production capacity. We are the winery chosen by prestigious premium range producers to carry out the production of their wines.

2021 Martino Viña Violeta Malbec - $30 - 23.07%
We’re out of our house right now for some renovations, but thanks to a helpful HVAC contractor the rat bottle was signed for and received (final attempt)!
The wife and I joined 4 friends for dinner last night, so it was a great opportunity to get several perspectives on the bottle. Dinner was pork tenderloin and pesto pasta. Two of the drinkers (including me) don’t care much for Malbec.
Pop and pour revealed a lot of dark fruits on the nose and a pretty one-dimensional wine on the sip (is this what people describe as “tight”?).
The wine opened up very quickly in our glasses, and within 10 minutes you could see the volume of wine per glass reduce significantly. The pro-Malbec crowd really liked it. The anti-Malbec crowd agreed that it was a good example of a Malbec and why we don’t particularly like them. Lots of dark fruit in the glass, a medium-length finish, and not much to complain about. I think if you typically enjoy Malbecs you’ll not be disappointed with this one. If, like me, you don’t - it’s not a bad one to have to drink to please the rest of the group.
At this price point, I’d be thrilled to have a bottle this solid of my preferred varietals. If that’s Malbec for you - buy.
Background:
Malbec is one of our semi-favorite varietals. Our favorites are Rhone varietals and Pinot Noir. Malbec is on the next tier for us, along with I suppose Petite Syrah, Barbera, and blends. Last Monday, we went out for our anniversary, and they had some good wines on their Half Price Monday list. We didn’t see any Rhones, but there was an Argentinian Malbec. Our attitude is, can’t go wrong with that, so that’s what we got.
So we’re usually happy with the QPR of a Malbec (especially from cheapskate sources like Casemates). And that’s what happened here.
Out of the bottle, not bad. Nice nose. Nothing wrong with it, pleasing. It didn’t taste expensive though. We just tasted a little after pasta in white creamy sauce, not the best pairing.
The next day, corked and fridged (no argon or vacuvinning, on purpose), it was, well, great if this is a budget table wines. Good with steak and veggies.
“Nothing wrong with it” is great praise for your budget wines. I could no longer resist checking it out online; I saw that it was not expensive. I predicted a casemates success, if the price was right.
And I see this morning that the price is very right. I’m going to try the last little bit now. It was re-corked fridged for 21 hours, and now the last half glass 19 hours sitting on the table, room temperature. And . . . still good. I think it’s not quite as good as last night. Falling off a bit, but definitely drinkable.
I’m loaded up on wine, currently. More wine in my house than ever. (took part in UC bankruptcy sale, and was already well stocked before that.) I’m good on budget wine, too. But I’m supporting a couple weddings later this year, and this just the type of thing I’m looking for to help with that. A solid malbec option for those Malbeccers. And any I get left with, no problem. It’s not going bad any time soon. My order will be placed in just a moment.
@losthighwayz this is just a great everyday wine. I was able to rat in back in December and got a case then. It’s smooth, not to tannic, complements many foods. I’m trying to remember specific flavors and my brain is failing me. Check out the Dec thread rattage.
Anyone else still waiting for shipment? Mine was sent regular old UPS ground, and has now been delayed in transit. I’m anxious to see how the wine survives the journey up the West Coast in a heatwave (I’m in WA).
@coryczorna @WineDavid49 could answer this more accurately, but my understanding is that the west coast retains its 2-day transit times and therefore doesn’t get the cold chain upgrade.
Of course if you have hot bottles or other signs of heat damage like pushed corks then WD will make you whole.
hi, your location is a 2 day transit address that is guaranteed 2 day via ground. looks like carrier had a service interruption. sorry about that. please let us know if packages arrive with any damage.
note, with the 2 day upgrade service, we don’t need to use the (slower) cold chain ground service. pure 2 day has been found to be more effective.

@Winedavid59 Roger that, appreciate it. It’s been delivered, now. I won’t be able to pop one open for a week or two.
