2017 Mauricio Lorca Malbec, Estate Grown, Mendoza, Argentina
Tasting Notes
Deep violet-red color. Very expressive with spicy aromas and ripe red pepper and cherry notes. Great amplitude in the mouth, with a very good structure and a soft, elegant, and persistent finish. Ideal pairing with grilled, roasted, or smoked red meat, goat and sheep cheeses, rice, stews, and pasta. Excellent with chocolate.
In 2003, Mauricio Lorca’s innovative spirit coupled with his commitment to producing the utmost quality led him to launch his first premium unoaked wines, making him a pioneer in Argentina. Today, Mauricio Lorca’s wines represent the materialization of his greatest dream: wines of great purity, without oak influence, that embody true varietal and authentic terroir expression and are made in a sustainable fashion.

Our winery is located in Perdriel, Lujan de Cuyo, about 30 minutes away from the city of Mendoza. Upon entering we are greeted by our Malbec vines. The winery itself has been built in a modern classical style, surrounded by gardens designed by a landscape artist using native plantings and having the Andes mountain range as a backdrop.
The winery boasts the latest technology in the production of wines of the highest quality: small-capacity stainless steel tanks and cement deposits, each with independent temperature controls, enable a specific and detailed monitoring of each one of our wines. Ageing takes place in barrels of French and American oak.
The winery also has equipment which receives, sorts and selects the incoming grapes and subsequently bottles, labels and also packs the wine for shipment, thus allowing us to control quality at each stage of the wine making process.

When I got the email saying I was a lab rat I was so excited: then when the box came and I saw it was a Malbec, less so. That said I invited friends over to help and this is how it went: Poured three partial glasses and let it sit for an hour (husband is strictly a beer guy). We had starters of cheddar goat cheese, venison sausage, Gouda etc. Everyone dug in and took a sip, eyebrows went up and all said at once “this is delicious”. There was also a nice nose and it was so smooth. Before we even got to dinner which was spaghetti and a salad-everyone said “buy this”! It paired wonderfully with the dinner and I am sorry to say there was no second night, it was all consumed quickly the first night. I guess you could say we really liked it. I would call it a medium bodied red that can be consumed with or without food. Very nice wine and for sure picking up a case. I will be pleased to serve this to guests or drink right by myself.

Belated lab rats here. Hubs said he looked after midnight and this wasn’t for sale . Happy I looked again.
On PnP he got vanilla and mint on the nose. Our son concurred. I don’t smell much (post COVID stuff) and had nothing to add. Color is a lovely deep plum. Tasting we get good acidity, especially being 6 years past vintage. Well structured wine. Hubs tasted the vanilla (I did not). He got blackberries, I added in dark cherries. There is also something herbaceous in a slightly spicy way. He calls is warm autumnal spices. Finish is lingering. We first tasted too chilled and all said definitely a food wine. As it comes up to room temperature I’d say I would be happy to drink it on its own.

@pseudogourmet98
We guessed a $13-15 Casemates price. At sub $11/bottle is excellent QPR and we’re buying a case.
Sounds delish, I got several cases on the way though.
@GatorFL We do too but this was kind of special especially for the price.
Well, I was drawn in by the label. The Rats kicked me over the edge. Just a miracle that shipping to CT is allowed.
Just received a case of Vina Violeta Malbec and now I want this!
@mgindi0820 I’m in!
