2019 Meadowcroft Zinfandel, Speedy Creek Vineyard, Knights Valley, Sonoma County
Tasting Notes
Spirited aromas of white cherry, plums, and caramel lead to complex layers of cherry cobbler and black licorice. The palate is polished and smooth, with a finish intertwined with toasted vanilla. Best now through 2030.
Suggested Food Pairing: Fire up your grill and serve this flavorful Zinfandel with grilled pork chops or ribs prepared with stone fruit salsa or spicy BBQ sauce. This wine will play nicely with bold flavors that have spice as well as a touch of sweetness.

Tasting Notes
This is a limited production Zinfandel from the Wyldvin Vineyard, (previously Louvau Vineyard) in the Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County.
Mesmerizing aromas of blueberry pie, fresh garden herbs, and almonds lead to a focused palate with flavors of huckleberry, blackberry jam, cassis, and baking spices. The finish is rich and round, with lingering tannins and notes of black currant, 5-spice, violets, and cocoa powder.
Food Pairing: This balanced, spicy Zinfandel makes a beautiful pairing with baby back ribs on the grill, Korean BBQ, or seasonal dishes like short rib chili.

2019 Meadowcroft Zinfandel, Speedy Creek Vineyard, Knights Valley, Sonoma County
Get ready for Thanksgiving!
Arriving midweek for this tasting was the Meadowcroft Speedy Creek Vineyard Knights Valley Zinfandel. Of note, the bottle states 14.5% alcohol but the specs listed above state 16% alcohol.
We shared the bottle with friends and can say that the wine grew on us.
I tasted a bit immediately after opening and experienced an alcohol/tannin burn followed by cherry berry licorice and leather with a moderately strong finish. At the time I thought the wine held promise - I was correct.
We let it breath for half an hour and first tastes were : “I don’t like it”. “Maybe we should let it rest a little longer”. “It’s ok, it smells like blackberries”.
An additional half hour allowed this wine to open up and we then paired it with a Humboldt Fog and a truffle brie. What a difference! “Yum” “I really like this” “it just needed time”. This is not a sweet cherry/berry, the wine is dry, plenty of acidity with a bit of heat at the finish.
This wine begs to be paired with fatty foods.
Definitely not a pop and pour but the remaining wine held up well for day two of our tasting and that’s a bonus.
Day two: We tried it again with cheeses. No alcohol smell or burn, the tannins softened and the cherry/berry/licorice aroma had decreased to a jammy scent minus the alcohol. The strong acidity we tasted last night had mellowed into a long finish.
There won’t be a day three as we finished the bottle.
The fruit forward taste of this Zinfandel had us thinking this would be a great Thanksgiving dinner wine. Just give it a little time to breathe before serving.
Thanks Alice and Casemates for sending this wine our way.
Meadowcroft Zinfandel Wyldvin Vineyard Dry Creek Valley Sonoma County 2019
Thank you Alice, for the email and the Bottle to be sampled along with the Cmates glass!
First for the disclaimers. I cannot say I’m the right person for the task, and I hope there are other rats or comments from those who have had this wine before. I haven’t fully recovered from the loss of smell & taste from Covid 2 years ago. It also makes my senses wonky at times with bizarre results. Plus I am recovering from oral surgery I had the day after the wine arrived during the 98 degree weather. No food pairings since I cannot chew.
I allowed the bottle to rest over night on the kitchen counter and took a whiff and a little taste after I got home from the oral surgeon, before setting it down for the next day.
First impression:
a small sample taken while dribbling out of the corner of my mouth.
Deep plum color, not opaque but pretty dense with a pretty red on the edges.
wisp of alcohol, evidenced by the long legs. Fruity aroma balances the alcohol nicely. Dark blue fruit like blueberry.
(initial PnP)
upfront ->violets, blackberry
some acidity, tannic medium length finish
2nd day:
similar nose as yesterday. Very aromatic with some dusty woody notes. Lots of purple fruit.
Upfront-> some alcohol meshed with the mentioned dark fruit in a very pleasant way. Not a fruit bomb though.
After a few minutes in the glass, black plum also coming through. A full mouth feel throughout. The tannin and acidity balanced well with the fruity initial taste and prolong the mid-palate and finish. Medium/full bodied. Delicious!
About an hour later, more wood/cedar emerging mid-palate. This Zin will pair well with grilled fare and traditional Zin food. More tannin and wood at the back of the throat. I would say this is more full-bodied now. Dry medium length finish.
This single vineyard Zinandel is certainly age worthy. I can see it developing into being truly special in a couple of years, but it is certainly enjoyable now with some decanting. This is a well crafted Meadowcroft example of Zinfandel, not typical of the California style. It has balance, complexity and depth and deserves something more than pizza and pasta. Or just drink it on its own! I’m sure I missed a lot with my faulty Covid senses and dental work! But from what I could gather, I think this could be enjoyed by all Zin lovers!
**** Just saw the prices as I’m uploading this, and I was surprised! I had this pegged at 2-3 times as the possible retail price. I definitely recommend it at this price point!*****
@rjquillin no chill. I didn’t want to shock the bottle with extreme temp swing from the high 90’s. It’s spent overnight and stayed on the counter at about 71-73 degrees room temperature.
@irenegade appreciate the review. Can you expand on whether or not you tasted American or French oak and how dominant the oak flavor was in the finish? Thank you!
@Leatherchair I’m not certain I could do that even w/o the Covid effects! But to me generally speaking, it was not oaky, yet enough to make its presence known and added nicely to the mix. The cedar/sandalwood part of the finish was more pronounced.
@Leatherchair I really liked the Wyldvin Vineyard that I sampled, I just have to make up my mind about the other 6 bottles of the Speedy Creek Vineyard.
@irenegade I’d love to know what you regard as “traditional Zin food.” We drink a lot of Zinfandel, and I’d hate to think we’ve been doing it wrong, lol.
@irenegade I so much understand. But think of this, what does love + OK =? I think that would mean “like a lot.” How is that for rudimentary justification. I’m going for a case
@Burns72 I would have been in for a case - I guess we need to lobby to make CT an easier state to ship wine to! I wonder if I could ship to UPS pick up point in nearby NY
@Burns72@ctmariner I have all my wine shipped to a UPS depot nearby, so I don’t have to be concerned about being home to sign for it when it’s delivered. The guys there call me when it arrives, I drive over there and pick it up, and occasionally find a tangible way (bubbly) to thank them.
@Burns72@ddeuddeg Is the UPS facility a different state from that which you live in? I am in CT (not on ship list for this wine) but was possibly thinking of shipping to a UPS facility in NY
@Burns72@ctmariner Actually, the UPS depot is in the same city (Buffalo, NY), but I don’t know of any reason you couldn’t use the UPS depot near you as a shipping address for an occasion like this. They don’t need to know the reason you’re having it shipped there. And you wouldn’t need a call from anyone there, since Casemates sends us notices when the wine has arrived. Depending on how far it is from you, it might not be convenient to use that address all the time, but it’s easy enough to change your address on this site. BTW, CT is easy enough to ship to, but from what I’ve been told, it’s just expensive to obtain the necessary license.
@Burns72@ddeuddeg Thanks for feedback - in line with my thinking. I often divert shipments to UPS facility in CT but have not shipped direct to one in next state over but should work fine. Agree on main problem with CT being the excessive cost and I also heard that the reporting was onerous.
How much more are you saving by buying a full case?

Speedy Creek:
The Nittany Epicurean had this to say 5/11/23:
The wines of Meadowcroft Wines have been a very welcomed addition to my ongoing series of discovery of some of the great wines of California…2019 Zinfandel Speedy Creek Vineyard produced & bottled by Meadowcroft Wines (Sebastopol, California).
This wine is made from zinfandel grown in Speedy Creek Vineyard situated in the mountains about Knights Valley in Sonoma County. It comes in at 14.5% ABV. The wine showed a dark ruby color. Cherry, raspberry, blackberry, currant, mossy earth and oak each arrived on the nose. Black cherry, raspberry and dark chocolate told the tale of a luxurious palate supported by notes of currant, oak and hints of eucalyptus. The wine was full-bodied and exhibited good length along with soft tannins. It would pair very well with braised beef short ribs. https://nittanyepicurean.blogspot.com/2023/05/2019-meadowcroft-wines-zinfandel-speedy.html
Speedy Creek was a 2023 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition bronze medal winner.
Note Nittany Epicurean also mentions an octane of 14.5 not 16.
@cosmo108 Sorry, but I found a “Casemate” yesterday and have already ordered. Marin is tricky for me as well as I live in the southern part of SF proper. Good luck!
Ok, put a case light up on SC. So this ships I hope not sooner than listed, my Oct 31 rule broken, but it’s my rule so I’m allowed to break it. Should be ok with the two day shipping. I hope.
@Winedavid49 Well it shipped a little bit before the Oct 6-Oct 9 window, was delivered today. Except I’m 1200 miles away. Worked it out with hold at location. However I’m thinking Vegas isn’t good for either one of us…
@watchster Welcome. If you find that you will be ordering a case every month or so, it may be worthwhile to become a member of Meh, and you will get free shipping on Casemates, Meh, Side Deal, and another website.
Help me out mates, I see the community value in CellarTracker for these are $34-36/btl. However # of bottles is pretty light. Not to be snarky, but the “winery” price has been found to be of questionable reliability from time to time. I feel that normally the community $ in CT has been somewhat accurate. I for one put in the real purchase price for my buys. Said way more succinctly, think $34-36 is legit?
@kainc Check the “stores” link. If they’re all “winery” or equivalent then people who use CT are buying it at the winery. If it’s some retailer then you know what it goes for in the wild.
The 2019 that’s there has 1 bottle from winery and one from FTD.
The 2018 of the other one has all bottles listed as from the winery and average value of $36+.
So yes, I’d say it’s legit that they’re getting that for the bottle at least sometimes.
@kainc numbers get played with… sometimes casemates plays loose, or just plain doesn’t pay attention, fact checking not a strength here my humble…but I digress
Anyway for this offer the Wyldvin is indeed $45 at the winery (Speedy Creek not listed but seems to be comp price)
As with many wines, winery price isn’t necessarily price at retail. This offer is correct at winery price of $45, what one finds in the market who knows? It’s why you need to do a little research which apparently you have. I purchased, at all in $13 seemed like a good value.
@kaolis Zin is my favorite varietal, rats were somewhat encouraging, ( been a streak of tastebud challenge rats of late? - no judgement, lol), so can rationalize if it doesn’t hit the mark if I know I got a deal!
I had asked for a feature to be added so that Casemates customers could keep notes of a wine they bought in case future offerings came available and these notes could be reviewed before purchasing again. I did get a response saying it was a great idea but nothing yet. Anyway - I’m going to be the ghost of wines past so that if an offering comes up for this wine maker (maybe a different vintage) I can say I would NEVER buy this wine again. I received this wine yesterday and had a tasting tonight. This wine is so bland and unexciting that I don’t know what to say. I bought it purely on the opinion of what others had to say. Sorry - I know a wine tasting is purely subjective and clearly (after tasting hundreds (maybe thousands) of red wines) other people’s opinions differ from mine. Anyway - maybe if this wine (varietal but different vintage) come up again it will remind me NOT to purchase this. Sorry for the Debbie Downer review but I feel I was completely mislead and after doing my tasting I was highly disappointed.
@InFrom@jliebent I opened the Knights Valley last night - decanted for half an hour or so and it was delicious with dinner (roasted brussel sprout salad with an fried egg on top) - nice fruit but not jammy. If the Dry Creek is half decent then I wouldn’t hesitate in ordering another case.
@ctmariner@jliebent We had the Dry Creek the night before (in honor of @irenegade I chose it after a visit to the dentist) and enjoyed it, after a similar decant. It didn’t complement our meal however, especially the dish with Szechuan peppercorns and the spicy cumin lamb. But it was nice sipping after we’d eaten.

Lol. Have been down that slope on several other online retailers.
@irenegade
That’s really good to know. Thank you for sharing.
@rjquillin @watchster liberally, eagerly, enthusiastically, maybe even lovingly.
Any thoughts on how long these can rest in the cellar?
@PeixeGato No word from the winemaker, but from my impression, I believe the Wyldvin Vineyard Zin will evolve and can hold for perhaps 5+ more years.
Looking for a Marin or northern SF split.
