@barnabee I know, but thanks for reinforcing it for me. I need to get back to making the themes. They were a relaxing diversion. I also need to rework the ones I have made to respect light and dark…
We’re kind of merging two somewhat distinct communities here though, one of which may be accustomed to being heavily moderated. So, they may either really welcome the freer posting rules ala Meh, or they may want to keep this place more refined and classy. Honestly, before we completely take over here, I think we should kind of get a read on the wine people’s community as they’re most likely to make this business arm thrive.
While I agree with your point @PurplePawprints, I believe that the heaviest moderation on WW started after woot moved to the Amazone. I’ve not used any other wine community sites so cannot speak to how those are moderated.
While I’m not here to increase any particular hit count, I am also not opposed to the occasional use of adult language. After all, given this site’s purpose, we know that everyone here qualifies as in adult.
@baqui63 I don’t disagree at all, and profanity figures heavily in my everyday language usage. I just don’t want us Meh regulars to turn off those who might make this more successful. They may all be just as cool as we are which is my hope.
@thumperchick I’m definitely not asking for moderation. Just hoping for a little self-moderation from some of us until we get a feel for things.
@PurplePawprints
As ‘wooters’ and not as familar with ‘meh’ until recently, being on a wine-centric site, we definitely are in the “refined and classy” camp.
Pardon me while I pour another mayonnaise jar of
Pinot.
@baqui63@Purplepawprints
I think you’re both right. And I’m thinking that the the two site communities will pretty much maintain their own identities. Myself, I’m planning on checking in on things here, but my main hangout will still be at Meh, my one and only purple love. However, I also think the wine community will enjoy their new freedom of expression after a little bit of culture shock.
/giphy culture shock
@PurplePawprints Agreed. I’m already a bit turned off by the (to me) excessive giphy stuff and in-jokes. And I’ve been wine.wooting since 2008 and active in the community since 2009. Things evolve, for sure, and that’s a good thing. But nobody wants all the wine.wooters to run away or just buy without being part of the community. casemates != meh
@klezman I agree, at least to an extent, about the in-jokes. Give this place time and it will develop its own in-jokes, like all communities, including WW do.
The /giphy, /image, /8ball and other markdown features are a part of the forum software and not meh.com specific.
/8ball Do you think the giphys will go away just because of the wine?
My sources say no
@baqui63 Yup, correct on all counts. I never felt like wine.woot had a whole lot of inside jokes, at least those that aren’t just obvious from the start (e.g. everything is corrado’s fault). But hey, I sometimes look through this stuff at work, and I tend to not like most images in these things. Haven’t particularly liked them in the w.w. fora either.
@carl669 Well if no one else is going to fucking say it, we obviously have to keep it fucking clean. I mean, fuck, it just wouldn’t be right to fucking curse here, y’know, in a brand new place with some new fucking people and all.
@rjquillin For the most part, the product threads didn’t need moderation beyond fixing improperly formatted links. I stayed away from the “shi[r]t-storm” of drama at shirt(dot), but my VolMod role became less relevant over the course of time.
I have a pretty liberal threshold for speech, but blatant advertisements or personal attacks are fair game for “moderation.”
Hey guys, there was already a comment on Woot that we were cliquey, which we are. Maybe we ought to leave the Meh in-jokes to Meh and let this forum develop its own in-jokes?
@sammydog01 I am already outey. How is any online community not cliquey? I just wanted to see what was progressing here. This is not home for me, anymore the Morningsave forum is (is that crickets?) I will stick with my Homies on meh!
I’m guessing the ww demographic trends quite a bit older than meh, which should make things interesting. I hadn’t considered cultural differences between the sites and am curious to see how this all plays out!
@hscottk Older, I’ll grant. But not “quite a bit.” The polls and other cultural references on meh indicate a strong presence of gray hairs. What is readily apparent is that far more women will participate on casemates. And are already participating. Of course, three women would be far more than post on meh.
Does this mean we’re up to five? On WW it almost always was clear as to who was posting and women were equally active in the community. Read the comments about today’s meh offer - radio controlled cars. I can identify ONE that might be something other than a basement dwelling lad. (Not that there is anything wrong with living in Mom’s basement.) That one is a name I know from WW. Out of the fifty posts, how many really are from women? Without naming names. On WW it would be about twenty-five.
@Lighter At the risk of sounding sexist, I’m not sure today’s Meh is a good example of male/female participants. However, I did a quick count of the Meh Goats and they are about 2 to 1 male vs. female (FWIW). I think there are more women on Meh than you think there are.
Keep in mind wine.woot has over 10 years of history. It might surprise you to know that the original participants of that site are WAY OLDER than they were. The site was also on the original Woot umbrella and still had the fresh vibe.
wine.woot was always a bit of the “pinky-extended” forum relative to the Walrus Bucket and UPS Girl posts that frequented the www.woot forum, but it was still largely made up of a cohort of that group with more disposable income.
Casemates is shiny & new and I’m sure the sibling site forums will have a bit of ye olde backseat “STOP TOUCHING ME! MOM SHE’S TOUCHING ME AGAIN!” shenanigans, but I largely expect little turmoil.
This group is seriously knowledgeable and dedicated (and spendy $ ); far exceeding anything I aspire to.
I don’t know that I will ever have a worthy food/drink combo for the “drinking tonite” topic; tho I surely am in complete awe, and would love to nibble on the leftover crumbs from these tables.
I am enjoying the vibe and the reading. I hope to enjoy a little learning also; and perhaps a little spending and dining and drinking along the way.
(I’ve got way too many bottles of Wellington waiting for my next attempt at being civilized. Thanks to W.W.)
What a great new way for me to risk/attempt poverty!
@f00l Most of us started right there with ya, myself included. For the most part, the community aren’t wine snobs and everyone started off knowing nothing at some point. Many of us even “knew” things that were almost entirely wrong (e.g. white wines should be served at fridge temp and red wines at room temp). Ultimately, you realize that your palate is your own, as is your vocabulary. This group will help you figure out what words make sense to YOU to describe wine and, over the course of popping corks and trying a lot of different stuff, how to maximize the likelihood that you’ll order the “right” wine for you off a restaurant menu based on the varietals & region of production.
I’ve got a feeling you might need to up your game over here, @carl669. (Hi, it’s Barney!)
@barnabee you changed your name!
I’m curious to know, is the skin working on here for you or do I need to tweak some stuff?
@jbartus barnabee is my purchasing account and I thought I’d use it here. I’m still Barney at Meh.
No, it’s not purple here, but since it’s not purple, it reminds me that I’m not Barney on this forum. I like it this way.
Does that make sense?
@barnabee it does. If you want it updated to work here do please feel free to tell me.
@jbartus Thanks, and if I haven’t told you in the last five minutes or so, I really, really love the “Barney Edition” on the Meh forum.
@barnabee I know, but thanks for reinforcing it for me. I need to get back to making the themes. They were a relaxing diversion. I also need to rework the ones I have made to respect light and dark…
@barnabee
@mfladd
??
@barnabee OMG! Confirmation I was right when I figured it out all those years ago!
@PurplePawprints
/giphy smartie pants
@barnabee Well, I mean I did forget what it was after a few months, so I didn’t spill the secret, at least.
/giphy I love purple, too
What on earth is that?
@klezman I’d answer honestly, but I’m not sure that this place will be open to that free-form kind of language.
Let’s just say that a google search of “f*** site:meh.com” is currently up to 5,500 hits, many of which are from the mehcronomicon.
@baqui63 Don’t you dare sell me short!
@klezman BLASPHEMER!
I mean, even on morningsave the rule was just no cursing in thread titles. I’d imagine here is at least as relaxed.
@Pantheist Especially after a few glasses of product.

@cinoclav Wait… “new fucking people” or “fucking new people”? These are NOT the same thing.
@baqui63 All depends on the amount of wine being drank and how the case sharing goes…
/giphy fuck it
@cinoclav
@baqui63
/giphy fucking new people
@baqui63
/giphy new fucking people
@baqui63 They look pretty similar to me
@Pantheist Well, similar anyway. Thanks.
Unlike many of the children’s threads on woot, wine woot threads were seldom moderated, and only lightly by TT.
And wine works with a mac or pc.
@rjquillin For the most part, the product threads didn’t need moderation beyond fixing improperly formatted links. I stayed away from the “shi[r]t-storm” of drama at shirt(dot), but my VolMod role became less relevant over the course of time.

@cinoclav
You shouldn’t say “fuck”
No, you shouldn’t say “fuck”
No, you shouldn’t say “fuck” —
Fuck No!
(“Fuck” is the worst word that you can say, so just use the word “mkay”!)

Peace Out, Bitches! Enjoy the community.
@barnabee
@mfladd Don’t leave us already. Give us time. You never know how things will develop.
let us consult the mehcronomicon.
“mmm… wine. so say we all.”
I’m guessing the ww demographic trends quite a bit older than meh, which should make things interesting. I hadn’t considered cultural differences between the sites and am curious to see how this all plays out!

@Lighter
Many of us on Meh are from the Dark Side; far more than you can possibly imagine.
@f00l Four?
@Lighter
I hope you can count higher than that. I really hope so.
@Lighter I’m gonna guess you can’t tell the ladies from the gents on Meh. Sometimes our usernames confuse people.
Does this mean we’re up to five? On WW it almost always was clear as to who was posting and women were equally active in the community. @Lighter
Product specific topics only reflect that particular product’s interest group.
The Dark Side is strong on Meh.
@Lighter I spotted four I’m sure of. I know that six are male. The others I don’t know.
I bought a set of these at the first offering.

@corrado
: )
@corrado Thank you. This makes me feel more comfortable. I want to learn (and drink) more than just buying what’s on sale at my local grocer.
