My wife and I are enthusiastic Champagne and red wine drinkers. Our palates have been notched up a bit in terms of quality over the years. So excited to have a red wine delivered for a Lab Rat review. We are not familiar with Michael Pozzan wines, and I didn’t do any research as wanted to taste the wine without any perceived opinions. We received a 2012 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. We already had planned a dinner of rack of lamp on the Green Egg, roasted garlic mashed potatoes done in the Instant Pot, and peas (frozen). After dinner realized forgot to take pictures of the amazing meal. We opened the wine, did an initial tasting and let breath. First sip was a little more fruit forward than expected. The wine mellowed out after giving time to breath 60 minutes or so. I would classify this as a more fruit forward, not oaked up Cabernet. Wife thought a little more tannin wine as not as fruit forward. Overall this would be a good daily drinker, for me was a little over powered by the meal. We did open another bolder Cabernet to also pair with dinner. This Cabernet would be a good daily drinker, general crowd pleaser and easy to drink. Bring to party and beat out all the grocery store wines people brought. I would say around a $15 price point this wine would be a good deal.
Was excited to get the nod for some lab rattage!
This ended up being perfect timing for once (not that I’m ever complaining!) because we had a small dinner party to attend a few days after it arrived, so I could gather opinions.
We had this with some bread and cheese, and then with a large roast our hosts had prepared, and I think it paired well with that type of fare (as you might expect for a new world, cali cab).
I personally would describe this wine as a fairly “standard” (not to pedestrianize the efforts of the winemakers) new world california cabernet, in the 20 dollar range - it was good, fruit forward, tannic structure, nothing mindblowing but certainly didn’t disappoint. the other guests at the dinner felt similarly.
I’d categorize this as a slight step above a daily drinker, and a reasonable purchase in the “want to buy a slightly nicer than a Tuesday table wine to bring to a dinner or a housewarming, or to have on a weekend with a nicer than a weekday meal at home” category. If you’re in the market for that, this seems like a good deal at this price, as a comparable wine at least at a NYC wine shop probably would cost 30 bucks!
Thanks for the opportunity to rat and hope this helps some potentional customers!

Tasting Notes
The 2020 Alexander Valley Cabernet is explosive with aromas of ripe wild summer blackberries, Marion berries, freshly roasted coffee beans, and cocoa powder. The mouth is bursting with flavors of black cherry, cherry cola, and milk chocolate, with a perfume of vanilla that lingers throughout the finish.
Enjoy this ripe and inviting Cabernet with BBQ’d baby back pork ribs smothered in sauce, served with molasses baked beans, and corn on the cob.

@ChiWineOne Hard to imagine a wine that wouldn’t be overpowered by rack of lamp tho…
@ChiWineOne @slowbie Yeah, even a 2012 Cab!
@ChiWineOne Who here goes to parties where there is grocery store wine?.. ha!
