96 points ~ Luca Maroni, I Migliori Vini Italiani, Italy’s Best Wines Guide 2023
Tasting Notes
Vividly red color showing light garnet hues. Ethereal and delicate aroma of violet on the nose, complemented by pronounced ripe red berries and pungent spices scents. The rich, balanced, and velvety flavors on the palate make it an ideal accompaniment to roasted red meats, game, and mature cheeses. This is a remarkable 96pt Chianti Riserva at a price that’s almost too good to be true!
This juicy medium-bodied Rosso shows intriguing aromas of blueberries and strawberries. The palate has a perfect balance. Elegant tannins with a supple fruity finish. This wine is fresh, fun, and a pleasure to drink and share.

What’s Included
4-bottles:
1x 2021 Campo Pietra Rosso di Montepulciano
1x 2018 Campo Pietra Chianti Riserva
1x 2021 Talosa Rosso di Montepulciano
1x 2018 Villa Bibbiani Chianti Montalbano DOCG Case:
At the foot of Mount Cetona, in southern Tuscany, you’ll find a charming and highly awarded family-owned winery called Barbanera. This estate dates back to 1938 when Altero Barbanera and his wife Maria Franceschini decided to test their luck and adventure their way into wine. Today, the winery is operated by fifth-generation sisters, Sophia and Agnes.
Owned since 1972 by Angelo Jacorossi, a well-known Roman entrepreneur, Talosa is one of the first companies in Montepulciano to have embarked on the path of quality that has brought Vino Nobile di Montepulciano to the top of Tuscan and therefore Italian enology.
The Villa Bibbiani winery is a magnificent building that housed the ancient basement of Cosimo Ridolfi in 1800.
Bibbiani is in a magical place, so surreal that it has even been embodied in Leonardo Da Vinci’s art. The beautiful vineyards extend from the slopes of Montalbano hill to the church of San Jacopo in Pulignano. They are planted with Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino, Cabernet Sauvignon, and other native grapes, with vines between 20 and 50 years old.

Minor edit: Talosa Rosso is 91 points Vinous Media. Bibbiani Chianti is 91 Luca Maroni but that’s a score that failed to appreciate the depth of this wine. This Montalbano Chianti is made with the same winemaking method and blending components as Cheval Blanc. A portion is aged in amphora, a portion in stainless tank and a portion in oak. Only 150 cases imported, this Chianti will make you fall in love again with artisanal Tuscan Sangiovese.
@Gmartwine Bibbiani Chianti is 91 Luca Maroni but that’s a score that failed to appreciate the depth of this wine.
I mean this is no offense, but if you got a poor score from Luca Maroni. . . it probably isn’t good juice. Dude gives out 90 point scores like they are going out of business.
So… either do not send him free bottles and continue his shit status as a reviewer… or accept that he didn’t think it was beyond swill. Because, Luca Bologna 90 point reviews are easily bought. Why did you even mention it?
This one is a little tough to write for me so here goes.
The the email came a couple days ago, (thank you), and ups dropped the bottle of Chianti Montalbano around noon today, now yesterday. This evening I went to my in-laws, my usual guinea rats, and we sampled at the end of their dinner. Pop and pour showed immediate legs and a nice garnet color. Definitely some fruit, but lots of alcohol on the nose. We agreed that it was tart, mom said it reminded her of the tart cherries on her tree when she lived in VA. I didn’t pick that up, but I had a slight jolly rancher flavor during the long finish. The finish for me was the best part. We let it sit for a bit and tried some more. She said she thought there might be something off with it. It tasted old, like it had been sitting open in the refrigerator for a few weeks. I agreed, but that could have been more psychological after she said something about it. That, or the the fact the alcohol content was too high for me. Tart, bitter, medium body with a bite. Dinner was chicken, it probably would have been better with steak, maybe pasta. The longer I sipped my glass, the better it got, but the second glass I poured went all the way back to the beginning. We finished our conversations about an hour and a half later and just before I headed home I took the very last sip from my glass, and wow was it tart. Letting it sit really did help remove some of the alcohol flavor and burn.
It wasn’t bad, but we didn’t care for it overall and that may have been our fault. Only after we did our tasting did we read that you should decant Chianti for a couple of hours. We didn’t so we may have given it an unfair shake.
This was my first time with this particular wine so I really can’t compare it to others. There were elements that lead me to believe that if you like this style it is probably good for you just not us. This feels like a rattage fail and for that I apologize. Cheers.
@jaybird You shouldn’t feel that way. I’ve been through the same issue, I would rather read an honest report than spend a couple hundred dollars for Drano. Our tastebuds are all different, but when there’s a consensus coming up with similar opinions with the wine is tasted over time and maybe food, you’ve done your job. Thanks for your honest report!
@Boatman72@jaybird But this was Hand Picked by the Italian Ambassador. Did you not read the label? Fucking handpicked, my dude.
Nevermind we get a shill who ended up with a shit-ton of wine and he is here trying to pawn off to the lowest bidder: CASEMATES!
I cannot support this dumpster fire of wine offerings. What happened to getting ageable vintages from awesome winemakers? At this point, I am assuming an Opus One knockoff is going to pop up and it will sell.
Edit: not to mention I live in a fucking huge metropolis and there is no way for us to meaningully exchange. Other than me posting in every thread: hey, wanna share?
Who the fuck does that? It gets tiring. I bet there are countless wines someone bought in CMH area that would share, but there is no way to do it.
Case-buyers, but hope you find a mate, should be the site name.
@Boatman72@jaybird@KNmeh7 I have to disagree with you on this one. On its face this looks like a pretty solid offer. And Mr Martellotto is the importer, so yes he wants to sell the wine. But hardly a shill. And he has quite an extensive background in the game. I agree that I have no interest in Luca reviews, be it 20 points or 100 points. So the fact he gave one of these wines 91, which back in the day was a great score, is pretty much irrelevant
The bad part is global heat wave and no way to hold shipping. And Brown may be going on strike to boot
Thought this looked familiar, on sale here last April. My UPS ref said ‘2018CAMPOCHIANTIRIS’ so maybe this will be a mixed case offer (EDIT: and there we go!) as I had thought I’d be seeing the producer’s Chianti Riserva.
Arrived at 5 PM, goes on sale in 7 hours, so glug glug glug into the decanter to let it settle down from travel and coax as much out of it as possible with limited time for rattage.
Leggy in the glass, a dusty purple color, good clarity, less ruby than most medium bodied old-world wines.
Aromas like blackcurrant, black cherry/tart cherry. On the palate, those fruits plus something I might call very ripe chokecherry (a Midwestern thing), both from the fruit and from the tannins. Good “grip” and earthiness. Well-rounded, hits all the taste buds, no gaps. Average finish that I’ll bet will be much better after a day in the decanter or open bottle. But, very pleasant now as well.
I’m a fan of the style; my palate is a little more Euro than Cali. One of the April Rats seemed a bit put off by the acidity. But I felt it very typical of the region, and a match made in heaven for that region’s food and big, often acidic flavors. To each his/her own! I prefer to celebrate the differences between new world and old world wines, rather than argue about them. Wine is life!
This would be dynamite with a Napoli-style pizza. This bottle would be downed in a flash! Unfortunately, the Ooni is packed away and no cold-fermented dough is prepped.
Wow, this is like way too much to take in and too little time, especially at the $14.58 pricing, to determine if it’s worth the effort. I usually prefer the mixed selections but this one seems sort of all over the map, at least initially. Need to wait for more rats …
How much more are you saving by buying a full case?
(Note: tax and shipping are not included in savings calculations).
Mixed Italian Reds - $35 = 16.66%
Perfect mixed set for my parents who enjoy the Chianti’s and other italian style reds. And they’re about out of wine and have been asking me to find more to order for them. Good timing.
Now just need some whites that they’d like for me to order for them.
Late follow-up but I want to put this out there. A day in the splash decanter and the Rosso di Montepulciano sings. Don’t dismiss. $15 bucks pretty good deal.
