Tasting Notes
The aromas bring thoughts of fresh Bing cherry, raspberry, and strawberry combined with slight notes of vanilla and leather. It is medium bodied, with nice layers of berry fruit, soft approachable tannins, and earthy structure with a good finish from balanced acidity; all of which lend themselves to good food and a good time. This wine could easily pair with cheese, pasta, red meat dishes, stew, chocolate, or as a stand alone glass of wine to be enjoyed.
The grapes come from Lodi, CA. Wine Enthusiast’s “Wine Regions of the Year, 2015.” The vineyards that benefit from the deep and rich soils that make-up the Lodi Appellation. I got to try out the Zinfandel and it was very fruit forward and I could taste the berry immediately, but it had a very crisp finish and that helped to keep the wine from tasting over sweet. I think this is an easy wine to drink and this would be a good wine for someone who is trying to transition into more of a red drinker from a white drinker. Overall I liked this wine and it paired well with a nice soft cheese plate.
Casemates graciously let me be a lab rat for the Pinot Noir - TL;DR is it’s a decent “drinking” wine that’s fairly light and more fruity than I was expecting.
Now for more detail. I am by no means an expert in wine, unless drinking a lot of it makes me some sort of expert. So when I found out I was doing this I really needed some frame of reference. I took a very brief seminar on tasting from the Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) and decided to use their framework for how to go about tasting the wine. So here are the thoughts I wrote down (with some input from the girlfriend, who was just excited to try a new wine):
Appearance
Clarity: Clear
Intensity: Medium
Color: Ruby
Nose
Condition: Clean
Intesity: Light to medium
Aroma characteristics: Cherry, pepper,
Palate
Sweetness: Off-dry to medium
Acidity: Low to medium
Tannin: Low
Body: Light
Flavor characteristics: Cherry, blackberry, bread?
Finish: Medium
Conclusion: Good to very good
In the end, we thought the wine was good more for just drinking than pairing with food, but pairing with something light that you might typically pair with a white wine could also work. Seems reasonable for the price, in my mind. Also, read a bit about the mission of Mustache Vineyards; supporting a good charitable cause in Movember and decent wine? Sign me up. Thanks for the opportunity!
@mommadeb Yes they were offered a few times then and I purchased at least 2X. No mustaches for me,tho. I believe it was a 2013 Merlot I bought and also a mixed case before that, 2014? I think today’s offer is a few $$ less. I wonder if there’s any still downstairs? (I ask myself)
I, too, bought a case from WW about a year ago, still have some left… Meh! at best I use it for Sangria or Kalimotxo. I suppose if you do it for the charitable cause it is worth it. IMHO it is very much comparable to the old 2 buck chuck from TJs

@mdigirol solid rattage!
@winedavid49 I hope @rpm gets a rat bottle
nope
Were these offered on WW? and we got cute paper mustaches with our order?

@mommadeb That was J. Rickards Winery that provided mustaches; they sold some great Zin on WW several years ago.
@bolligra thanks. I couldn’t remember the winery, just that I liked their wine and the cute mustaches. Sounds like I need to try this now
Instant buy.
I’m in for a case!
@mommadeb I didn’t get paper mustaches when I bought this on WW.
