New Car help
0Trying to figure out which car to look at/purchase. The car we choose will most likely end up going to Indiana in a few years so it needs to be able to handle winter. We were thinking about a Subaru Outback or their newest one Ascent. There is also a Volkswagen Atlas. Thoughts? Pros/cons… Other ones we should consider?

I really love my GMC Terrain. It handles very well in winter. It’s AWD.
@bahwm a long time ago, when the kids were little, we had a GMC conversion van… I really liked it. I will have to look at the Terrain
The Subaru. If it can handle Iowa winters, it can handle Indiana.
Number of people trying to fit into the new car on a daily basis?
@jml326 mostly just me, the kids will both be in college. Right now I have a Toyota Highlander. I love all the cargo space in it.

Subaru, great vehicles. The eyesight system in them is excellent. My fiance drives a Cross Trek daily, 75 to 100 miles or so and absolutely loves it. Smaller than Outback but better gas mileage and still has a lot of cargo space.
@rc70
glad you like yours. I absolutely hate mine. Worst car I’ve ever owned and than includes an early model dodge colt.
gas mileage sucks, service sucks, homelink sucks.
overall a waste of money.
soon as I won’t be upside down, I’m back to Toyota
@Cerridwyn @rc70
Ooh, my first car, a 1974 Dodge (really Mitsubishi) Colt. It was green.
@Cerridwyn @rc70 why did you hate the Subaru?
@mommadeb @rc70
pretty much what I said
worse gas mileage than my old turbo 16 valve saab, homelink you pay for doesn’t work at all, dealer people are stupid (took them 4 months to get it registered properly in my name). has less power than my prius had.
When you compare cards, you have to compare with what you have owned, and i’m one of those who for years got a new car every 3-4 years (california aura). I’ve had compacts, SUVs, sedans, hybrids and even that big monster Saab I had back around 1990, but this has been the worst experience i’ve had with a car. I figure I have one more to buy before i consider paying it off and keeping it. It won’t be a subaru.
@InFrom @rc70
mine was blue,
Consider a car that is powered by wine, as this is Casemates after all.
@foxrunner Is there self-driving wine?
@NightGhost that would be the winomobile!
@foxrunner @NightGhost isn’t that what Sparky drives?
@foxrunner @NightGhost Nice…once the self-driving cars come along no more DUI…
@foxrunner @klezman Until those cars become self-aware and realize they don’t need humans. There’s gotta be a movie in that somehow… The Transforminators.
What’s wrong with the newer Highlanders? I’ve not heard great things about the Atlas thus far. If you don’t need the extra row of seats, the Q5 are pretty sharp.
@browncj7 My only problem with the Highlander, I hate the shape of the steering wheel. It’s not round, and it hurts my hands
$15 on amazon
@browncj7 @mommadeb Does it come in purple???
@browncj7 @trifecta
I loved my Subaru. It was amazingly easy to control (even on ice) and very peppy. Downside was the turbo cooked everything. It was apparently a common problem with that year (banjo bolt starved turbo of oil, threw metal into the engine). It was a 2005 legacy gt. So, I’d just say visit one of the enthusiast forums for the model you pick to make sure there aren’t any serious common problems.
I live in an area where there is a Subaru in every 3rd driveway. I have to assume they are quality cars, but I have never cared for them and wanted to go different when I realized my little Infiniti coupe wasn’t going to cut it in the PNW winters. I went with a VW Tiguan and I do love it. Has good pickup, and the AWD, which I tested the first week I had it. I’ve generally been able to stick with new cars, but recently a friend bought a used Toyota Sequoia and I love it. I really love Toyota (husband has an FJ that I think will last forever) but the price of a new Toyota SUV just seems way to high. After the deal she got, I would consider used on a Toyota because they last forever.
@airynne I have had a Toyota Sienna van, and now the Highlander brother has the FJ and now the Tundra truck. Just don’t know …
@mommadeb So a Toyota family They are well made vehicles. The lifetime maintenance costs will factor into any vehicle I buy in the future.
@airynne hubby loves his kia… i bought my highlander and it came with lifetime maintenance… but tje dealership was sold and the new owners wont honor the lifetime maintenance. Only the free oil changes. Needless to say, im not happy
A factor to consider is fuel efficiency and overall cost of ownership. Subarus tend to hold their value well, but Volkswagens might have higher maintenance costs.
Choosing a car for Indiana’s winters is a smart move! The Subaru Outback and Ascent are known for their all-wheel-drive capability, perfect for snowy conditions. The Volkswagen Atlas is a solid option too, but may not have the same winter performance. If you’re open to other suggestions, you might consider the Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V. They offer reliability and decent winter handling. And if you ever need help transporting a classic car or any vehicle, A-1 Auto Transport could be a reliable option. They specialize in classics. Hope this helps!

@chipgreen I think you forgot to tag @rjquillin
@Mark_L @rjquillin
Wasn’t spam, just a random resurrection.
@chipgreen @Mark_L Rather clairvoyant actually.
That’s exactly how I’ve felt this week; totally appropriate imo.
Just need less hair pigment and some chin fuzz.
And why I’ve been a bit absent and slow with duties
@Mark_L @rjquillin
I am starting to walk like that myself… here’s hoping you get your mojo back!

A bit better today. Fever that was touching on 39 for a few days is now back to my normal 36. Strangest thing, zero congestion, sore throat or any of the normal flu/covid symptoms, just the fever and extreme fatigue that allowed (mandated) I sleep or checkout for ~22 hours/day. We’ll see how today goes…
