Double Gold Medal ~ Amador County Fair 92 Points ~ Wine Enthusiast 91 Points ~ Planet Grape Gold, 95 points ~ California State Fair Gold ~ 2024 The San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition Gold ~ 2023 Dan Berger’s International Wine Competition
Tasting Notes
Noceto’s flagship Sangiovese is modeled after an Old World Tuscan Chianti - medium-bodied, beautiful acidity, fruit-packed, easy-drinking, well-balanced, and extremely versatile with food. This wine is widely regarded as "the best Sangiovese in California:’ (Dan Berger, Darrell Corti, Mike Dunne, Elaine Taylor). 2020 marks Noceto’s 31st vintage.
The 2020 Noceto Sangiovese is ripe and bright, with cherry fruit at its center and a lingering palate. Secondary flavors include cassis, cranberry, rich plum, peppery spice, and light oak. Exceptionally food-friendly: Pair with red sauces, spicy ethnic foods, and light meats.
Vineyards
Grapes are from 14 separate lots -98 % from five clonal Sangiovese selections and 2% Canaiolo Nero. Made with 100% Estate vines, including cuttings sourced from Isole e Olena (47%) in Chianti as well as 11 Poggione (31%), Altesino (12%), and Biondi Santi (3%) in Montalcino. Each lot is harvested and fermented separately prior to selective blending.
Winemaking
The fruit is cold-soaked 1-2 days, then, fermented in stainless steel bins and French oak for 7-10 days at 70°-85° Fahrenheit to preserve bright varietal characteristics. The wine ages in 130-gallon, predominantly French oak puncheon to soften youthful tannins.

2020 Noceto Dos Oakies Sangiovese, Shenandoah Valley, California
91 ~ Connoisseurs’ Guide Silver ~ 2023 Dan Berger’s International Wine Competition Silver ~ 2024 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition
Tasting Notes
The 2020 Dos Oakies is layered, complex, and well-balanced, with great structure and classic Italian flavors. It displays dark cherry fruit and earthiness with a touch of leather, oak, and salty ocean air. It pairs well with grilled or roasted meats, steak Florentine, rich pasta, or heavy, spicy dishes like curry.
Vineyards
The oldest section of the estate vineyard, planted in 1988, the Dos Oakies block is located on the winery parcel, immediately east of the Tasting Room. The name originates from the twin oaks that flanked the vineyard, though one has since fallen in a storm. Cuttings for this block were smuggled into the country in the early 70s and conveniently planted a few miles down the road at a neighboring vineyard.
Winemaking
The fruit is crushed, and cold-soaked for 1 to 2 days, followed by fermentation in a combination of French oak puncheons and stainless steel punch-down tanks for 11 days at 70°-85° Fahrenheit to preserve bright varietal characteristics. The wine is aged for 19 months across two stages in a mixture of stainless steel tanks as well as 130-gallon French oak puncheons, 50% new.

Displays multi-faceted, earthy complexity while retaining balance and fruitiness that’s complemented by a lingering finish. Food friendly: pair with grilled or roasted meats and rich pasta dishes.
Noceto’s Brunello-style Riserva Sangiovese is blended from the best estate lots and displays superior fruit while retaining balance. Fruit-packed, full-flavored, and complex with a lingering finish.

Non-Vintage Noceto Rosso Sangiovese di California
Tasting Notes
Noceto’s Rosso is a predominantly Sangiovese blend sourced from vineyards throughout the central coast and northern California. Made in a food-friendly Chianti style, this is a simple, easy-drinking go-to for an everyday red that will go with everything on your plate.
NV Rosso opens with a nose of cherry-berry, fruit roll-up, and cedar. Secondary flavors include bright cherry, cassis, leather, minerality, and balanced acid. Exceptionally food-friendly, you can pair it with anything you have on your plate - from charcuterie to Barese ragù or Korma!
Vineyards
Grapes were sourced from multiple vineyards ranging from the central coast (Brutocao) through northern California (Noceto and Sidney Davis). In addition to Sangiovese, we also selected Sagrantino, Alicante Bouschet, and Canaiolo Nero. Each lot is harvested and fermented separately prior to selective blending.
Winemaking
2022 was a challenging year due to frost and a late-season heat wave. It really pushed winemaker Rusty Folena to take into account that every vineyard was different and that he had to adjust his winemaking to those vineyards. “That’s why there is no recipe,” says Rusty. The fruit was cold-soaked for 24 hours, then fermented in a combination of stainless steel, bins, and French oak (depending on the vineyard) for 7-10 days at 70°-85° Fahrenheit to preserve bright varietal characteristics. The wine is aged in 130-gallon, predominantly French oak puncheons to soften youthful tannins.

Vino Noceto has been making “California’s Best Sangiovese” for over 25 years. Located in beautiful Amador County, we now make eight different Sangioveses as well as an Old Vine Zinfandel, a slightly sparkling Moscato called Frivolo, Barbera, a Tuscan Red Blend, Pinot Grigio, and more!
On their nearly forty acres they now have twenty-five acres of grapes, almost all Sangiovese, five acres of olive trees, 200 lilac bushes, and two acres of walnut trees, each contributing revenue to the farm. Buildings include their 1887 renovated ranch house, winery and tasting room buildings, and several rustic barns and outbuildings. From only 110 cases of Sangiovese in its inaugural 1990 vintage, the winery now produces 8,000 cases of wine annually. This includes 5,000 cases of nine different Sangioveses, 1,500 cases of a lively Moscato blend called Frivolo, plus an old vine Zinfandel from the Original Grandpere Vineyard, Barbera, Aglianico, and Pinot Grigio. Then there’s always some grappa when you need a nightcap – but that’s another story!
Why Noceto? Noceto means walnut grove in Italian, and walnuts were a staple crop for the farm where the Noceto estate now stands. Noceto, Italy, near Parma, is the sister city of Suzy’s native town of Walnut Creek. Plus the name is short, simple, and easily said if not necessarily properly pronounced!

2020 Noceto Sangiovese Riserva
I am always happy to be chosen as a reviewer. When I saw this wine, one that I was introduced to during wine woot years, I was even more anticipatory to see what Noceto was making, since I hadn’t tried any of their wines in a very long time. I should also reveal that I drink a lot of various Italian wines. Personally, I prefer barbera wines over sangio wines when it comes to Italian meals that call for wines with this flavor, acidity and structure.
After having just read RPM’s review of the recent Pinot Noir offering, I decided to follow his guidelines, without numeric scoring, for this review. So here we go.
Appearance: Very clear, when viewing with a white background, so it was very easy to see through.
Color: Pale cranberry color, somewhat pinot noir-like.
Aroma/Bouquet: Cherry and strawberry are the most prominent, which is very consistent with Sangiovese grape. There was a faint underlying aroma of an indistinguishable citrus fruit.
Total Acidity: Minimal, but welcoming, acidity. I would expect this for a young sangio wine.
Sweetness: Very, very slight sweetness in aroma and taste.
Body: Light, which again is consistent with young sangio.
Flavor: Cherry and strawberry on the front end, with plum and something citrus, which could be lemon or grapefruit, on the aftertaste.
Bitterness: None.
Astringency: Soft tannins, but along with mild acidity is noticeable of the sides of the tongue, as well as post swallowing.
General Quality: This is a very easy wine to drink. Chianti is also made of sangio. On night 1, we had this with beef stew and on night 2 with meat loaf, with both pairing very well. At the case price of $12.50/bottle, this is a no-brainer, especially considering this as part of a four different wine offering.

Noceto Mixed Sangiovese - $30 = 16.66%
The Nocento Rosso is a lite, easy drinking Sangiovese. There is no appreciable nose but opens with a slight cherry and strawberry flavor. The wine finishes with a slight astringent taste. Nice little everyday drinker but nothing to write home about.
Exactly what we were going for with the Rosso – a light, easy-drinking red to go with lighter foods or warm-weather times – a contrast to both the Originale, Riserva, and Dos Oakies.

@kaolis Re: riserva on WE. I didnt get any of that. 3 of my wine drinking friends gave me their input and none had those flavors in their perceptions. YMMV.
Arrrrggghh … why did I look at CM today??! … one of, and perhaps the first wine I purchased from WD3/49 (maybe in 2007 or earlier?) was a Vino Noceto and the Gulletts are great folks. I think I might still have a VN somewhere in my “cellar”. Had to get a case and face the wrath of SWMBO. Wish me luck.
This wine reaches me on a week of sickness, so please forgive the late review. I had the opportunity to taste the 2020 Noceto Sangiovese, and found it absolutely lovely. I opened it last night, and found it to be a little tight, but with a lot of promise. It seemed very oaky and dusky, with that traditional Sangiovese bite. I could only handle a few sips at the time, so I had a little more this morning.
I really recommend this second day. It’s fully opened and has a lovely body. The nose is hard for me to discern, but even with the crud I can detect fruit and oak with maybe a dash of tobacco. I can taste dark fruit and a light oak with a dash of tobacco and vanilla. I absolutely recommend this wine, even with missing part of the experience. I can’t wait to try these when I’m able to smell and taste as normal.
@erisire Thanks for the review. Bought a case prior to reading. Do you perceive the “oak” as possible smoke taint. I have had a lot of noceto over the years and that word doesn’t come to mind. Thank you.
@erisire@Leatherchair WC member and have been drinking through a case of the 20. I can assure you there is zero smoke taint. Oak is there but not very noticeable. It’s well integrated imo (I’m not a fan of any oak in my wine )
@erisire@losthighwayz Thanks for the reaffirmation. Great to know. I ordered a case and may make it 2. Love their wines - and also just don’t like oak. Appreciate it a lot again.
@erisire@Leatherchair We’re pouring this wine currently at the tasting room. We haven’t noticed any smoke taint to date nor tightness. Would be interested if others perceived the same.
@DanOR Not a typo. Still trying to decide what we’ll retail it for – probably $10 or $12. Also likely it will not be available in the tasting room or our website. Again, it might change.

@normanl0 It’s possible, but could depend on your location. I’ve had cases come in 1-2 weeks before delivery dates, the last was a few days in advance of the dates (the weather could have affected that as well)
So glad to see Noveto back on the site! This broke my buying moratorium. Always need to have some sangio! I also need to go back and read the reviews now that I bought.
I have been a customer since the 2003 vintage and have sampled it all back to 1991. This is the best Sangiovese in America.
I have nine bottles of Rosso left; three each from the first three bottlings of this NV wine. I don’t know how many there have been. All have been good. The earthiness of the black cherry Sangio and the rustic goodness of the Barbera make for a fine wine. Is it about 50-50? I forget. It’s always good and from the new label I see at least a 4th bottling. My brother in law told me last year or so that he liked the Rosso over the Originale. But then he drinks flavorless vodka over whiskey, so I question his palate.
The Originale (former Normale and still in need of a better moniker) is always amazing value. I marvel at how it is so good. I’ve been buying a lot of it since the 2003 vintage when I first stumbled onto it. I fell in love with the 2004 vintage which made me almost dislike the 2005, but then 10-12 years later I was amazed at how the 2005 grew into something even better. Now that they are released with an extra year of lying around, they are ready to drink on delivery. I used to wait until the holidays and some years after the New Year to drink these wines. They were not ready yet. Oh, they were drinkable, but there was a certain brooding that was disjointed to me that needed those few more months. There has never been a bad vintage, although an occasional less intense year happens once every 10 or 12 years. The flagship wine, something that still makes Noceto the best Sangiovese in America.
Riserva is the queen of the bottlings. Always complex. Occasionally the Originale approaches it but the Riserva has more depth, better balance, more intensity and an elegance you can always count on. Like a fine Brunello. You can’t go wrong. Whatever ever Rusty Folena the winemaker does to blend this up, I always marvel at how good it is.
And then it’s Dos Oakies. They have a trio of single vineyard wines. Marmellata is jammy and Hillside is also regal, but Dos Oakies packs the best punch. My last of my 2004 trio of those wines were drunk up last year and all three were still dark, youthful and wonderful. They made the 20 years I had thought they’d last and my God, they had many more left in them. The Dos Oakies was the best. My wife, eldest granddaughter and I manufactured about 12 dozen Cannelloni for Christmas, half meat and half cheese, handmade pasta. We did the trio with them, half the pasta in red sauce and half in a creamy sauce. Our family raved about the pasta and the wines. Dos Oakies was everyone’s favorite. The acid cut through the tomato tartness and fattiness of the cream sauce. A nice prime rib or ribeye and a Dos Oakies makes for a nice meal, too.
This is another amazing offer. I’m adding to my cellar!
@SteveJones you just made me darn near drool. I haven’t had Canneloni since I was a kid at Buscalia’s!!! Thank you so much for such a wealth of info on these wines!
@rjquillin@SteveJones we have less than 5 cases of the 2017 left in the tasting room. If you’re interested, reply all to that last email and I’ll let you know what we can do!
These wines are always great and are always in my personal cellar. Their winemaker Rusty Folena started working with me at Santino when he was 15 years old. We worked together for 16 years at Santino and Renwood. He is now a well respected Amador winemaker. You’ll find our styles similar. Cheers, Scott Harvey
Apologies for the late rat, but just got back from an emergency/unscheduled work fiasco. Anyway on to the:
2020 Noceto Dos Oakies Sangiovese, Shenandoah Valley, California
Upon PnP, very fruity, light leather. Based on first sniff impressions, this is going to be VERY easy to drink.
First swirl and sip, the dark fruits come through, and it is more intense than I had imagined. Still very easy to drink. I then decanted for an hour. The fruitiness is prominent in a good way. A little earthiness/leather that rounds out the pallette. Overall a very nice, high quality wine. Went very well with the lamb bolognese we had. Just delicious. Highly recommend.

@hscottk @rjquillin I know, and its timing right after BD is going to have to keep me out. This makes me rather sad.

@Boatman72 I saw Medina light up on the map and figured it was you! I had to grab a sixer too! I’ve been waiting for Noceto to make an apperance.

Can we get a ship to a non-ship-to state? Pretty please?
Possibly. Let me know which state and I may be able to help by arranging shipping from the winery.
@SuzyatNoceto For those locked out,
just contact you here or call the winery?
@rjquillin @SuzyatNoceto this is Anamieke from Noceto. Please email into the info@noceto.com account and we’ll make sure Suzy follows-up with you!
@SuzyatNoceto thanks Suzy. CT in my case.
Any eastern PA/Philly folks interested in helping me break my SIWBM with a split?

Had to buy two half-cases for the upgrade.

@smittypap That’s a good call. Copy that!
I’m finally available to respond to any questions you may have. So feel free to ask away. Glad to be back with the Casemates community!
Which wines are included in the 1/2 case?
@dianefreda
As noted beneath What’s Included at the top of this thread:
2x 2020 Noceto Sangiovese, Amador County
1x 2020 Noceto Dos Oakies Sangiovese
1x 2020 Noceto Riserva Sangiovese
2x Non-Vintage Noceto Rosso Sangiovese di California
Auto-buy! Didn’t even bother to read comments until I had ordered a case.
Great to see Noceto on Casemates!
Any chance this is would show up earlier than estimated delivery dates?
@normanl0 It’s possible, but could depend on your location. I’ve had cases come in 1-2 weeks before delivery dates, the last was a few days in advance of the dates (the weather could have affected that as well)
@james @normanl0 Also depends on how quickly we can get the wine to Sonoma. We hope we can get it there by first thing next week.
@james @SuzyatNoceto I will be out of town and was hoping it would not come any sooner than the 24th if I ordered. In Missouri
@james @normanl0 it’s typically 10 days to ship, then another 3-4 to arrive here in the Midwest
@kitkat34 @normanl0 Oh yeah I’m in Missouri too!
@SteveJones
Need some AX1 here
@SteveJones you just made me darn near drool. I haven’t had Canneloni since I was a kid at Buscalia’s!!! Thank you so much for such a wealth of info on these wines!
@rjquillin @SteveJones we have less than 5 cases of the 2017 left in the tasting room. If you’re interested, reply all to that last email and I’ll let you know what we can do!
@rjquillin my apologies, if interested, you can email us at info@noceto.com.
@rjquillin AX-1 and the Noce Knoll predecessor is their top offering!
@anamieke @rjquillin I have about 350-400 bottles of Noceto in the basement.
@SteveJones This release of Rosso is about 91% Sangiovese, 5% Sagrantino, 2% Alicante Bouschet, and 2% of a little of this and a little of that.
@anamieke @rjquillin Oops. Sorry. 400 total bottles. About half are Noceto.
So glad Noceto is back! Thanks Casemates!
@ScottHarveyWine Thanks so much for weighing in, Scott!
Never had this. The notes look good. In for 6, mostly since I have no room.

In for 2-half cases {copycat}
