2019 Onesta Grenache Blanc, Clay Station Vineyard, Lodi, California
Tasting Notes
Meyer lemon and a hint of white peach aroma jump out of the glass. A bright and refreshing white wine, with complex layers of sea mist and minerality, will quench any thirst on a hot summer day. Inspiration for this wine style developed while drinking the white wines from the Amalfi Coast of Italy, where the mountains meet the sea. Like the wines of the Amalfi region, the Onesta Grenache Blanc pairs perfectly with grilled fresh seafood drizzled with green herbs and lemon.
About the Wine
Grenache Blanc is the white-berried equivalent of Grenache Noir, and, like its red variant, is drought-resistant, vigorous, and easy to graft. The varietal originated in Spain and still plays a role in the wines of Rioja and Navarre. From Spain, it spread to France where it has thrived in the vineyards of the RhĂŽne valley and ChĂąteauneuf-du-Pape. It is the fourth most commonly planted white grape varietal in France, comprising over 37,000 acres in Roussillon alone. Its high-sugar, high-acid, straw-colored bunches produce wines that are high in alcohol, with green apple flavors and aromas. Although it can stand confidently on its own, its crispness and long finish make it a tremendous blending component.
Clay Station Vineyard, Lodi CA
North East Lodi, soils have a deep amber hue, indicating mineral content is high. Sustainably farmed by Markus Bokisch, the vine canopy provides a perfect shaded region for ripening clusters and retaining acidity.
Vinification
With all Onesta wines, Jillian showcases what Lodi can offer; bright, balanced, fruit-forward wines with a north coast profile. 100% Grenache Blanc whole cluster pressed for gentle handling. Cold fermentation in stainless steel retains the fresh tropical fruit flavors while sur lie aging for 6 months gives the wine a richness on the palate.

Jillian found her passion for wine while studying neurobiology at UC Davis. Home brewing introduced her to the magic of fermentation, and after taking the âIntroductory to Winemakingâ class at UC Davis, she quickly switched her major to Viticulture and Enology. She graduated with her degree in 2001 and soon thereafter found herself as an intern at the famous Bonny Doon Winery.
Her desire to learn more about winemaking has taken her around the globe. To gain essential winemaking experience in a short time, Jillian traveled to the southern hemisphere to work an additional harvest each year. For three years she traveled south to learn how to work with different varieties and observe different winemaking styles. She did internships in McLaren Vale (South Australia), Margaret River (Western Australia), and Stellenbosch (South Africa).
Syrah quickly became her deepest passion and she returned to Bonny Doon as Associate Winemaker in 2005, focusing her talents on the Rhone varieties that the Dooner is known for. She played a major role in the transition to biodynamic winemaking at Bonny Doon. Now a truly seasoned winemaker, Jillian has started her own passion project, Onesta. Her artistic expression is manifested in her wines. Jillianâs wines speak the truth of each growing season and each vintage is a new adventure for her, riding the waves of Mother Nature. Her promise to herself and her customers is to deliver wines with personality and depth every year. Jillianâs wines are made with passion and love, just like she lives her life. Her hope is that every sip of Onesta will ignite the soul with passion and enthusiasm for living life to the fullest.

2019 Onesta Grenache Blanc - $40 = 22.21%
Impressions from first pour: very very light straw color; only noticeable if you look through the bottle. We got a bit of peach or nectarine on the nose, but not much else.
With tasting, the first thing that jumped out at me was the viscosity; this is thick, and sticks around for a bit. I got a very faint taste of something that was on the edge of being dried, either grape or plum. Minerality in spades, though, reminds me of some Alsace wines. The wine is crisp and clean; the finish is not sour like some others.
Weâre debating actually buying some; it went great with cheese and crackers, and itâll be a great summer drinker (now that summer is winding up). Thanks for letting us try this out!
Hereâs a coincidence: just over two years ago, we had the opportunity to sample another wine from Onesta, a Cinsault. This time itâs the 2019 Grenache Blanc, a varietal with which weâve had some experience. It was a perfect day to start up the grill and cook some chicken, knowing that would pair well.
First impression after pulling the cork and pouring a taste: lovely light color, a nice aroma of peaches and apricots, maybe a little jasmine. The first sip brought more of the peach sensation and some mineral notes as well. The wine was very enjoyable with dinner, and continued to be enjoyable even at a temperature I would usually consider too warm. Weâd had the audacity to have a bottle of Grenache Blanc from one of our favorite wineries (not sure if I should identify it or not) just a couple of nights earlier, thinking it could be interesting to compare them. The Onesta held its own quite nicely against a truly fine example of a well-made Grenache Blanc.
I thought this might go for around $25 at the winery, and maybe $15 here, and I was surprised to be that close. This is another really nice wine from Onesta, and a good bargain at Casemates. A âscreaming dealâ at the case price.
Iâve enjoyed the few grenache blancâs Iâve been able to try, and have really enjoyed everything from Onesta so far. More 90 degree days ahead here in PDX so should be plenty of time to chug a case of white wine.

I received an email from Alice letting me know that I had been selected as a Lab Rat and that the wine was launching on Monday. ddeuddeg picked up the wine from our local UPS Depot where it was being held and we promptly put it in the fridge and began meal planning. Sorry that I am posting so late, school is starting this week and I am dealing with the usual beginning of the year anxieties and sleepless nights!
We were pleased to see that it was an 2019 Onesta Grenache Blanc from Lodi. We LOVE Grenache Blanc and were eager to try this wineries product. The day this wine arrived, we decided to try a Grenache Blanc from another winery that is well-known to the last group of RPM touristas. I must say that the Onesta held up very well when compared to the other wine.
Weâve liked every wine of Jillianâs that weâve bought. I actually bought a 4-pack of this when it was offered before, and my wife was sad to find out we only had 4 after we tried the first bottle. In for a case!

The Grenache Blanc is made in a âGrecco di Tufoâ style, crisp and refreshing, stone fruits, and LOTS of minerality. Because of the rich minerality, the wine will change and open up as you drink the bottle and contemplate life.
It sounds strange, but one could even decant this wine, a process that is not normal for white wines. If you are in a hurry to get your buzz on, grab that decanter
A huge thanks to all of you for being devoted Onesta fans. I am grateful for your positive feedback and awesome energy each time we post a wine for you all.
@WineDocNapa Thank you for chiming in! I commented to ddeuddeg that the wine really changed and opened up through our meal. I was thinking (in my head, but apparently didnât vocalize) about decanting a white wine and wondering if this one benefitted from some air! Thank you for confirming! Off to place an order.
Sounds great - I love Grenache Blanc as it is such a versatile varietal. Do you always age in stainless steel or do you experiment with older oak as well? Cheers!
@tercerowines I have tried a couple neutral barrels in the past, but the fruit I work with gets over powered easily, even with the neutral oak. I keep it fresh and bright with the Stainless.
Thanks for asking
In for a case. Based on the rattage and winemaker notes, I am certain this will be right up my alley. My wife will be so happy that I finally bought a case of whites

Love people that can chug a case of wine. Canât deny that it happens at Onesta home base on the weekend

This is not a quaffing wine for my taste. I found it to be quite tart with strong notes of green apple punctuated with a pleasing minerality. As the wine warmed, it mellowed with more peachy notes and a pleasant minerality. It became more enjoyable with our dinner of grilled chicken, whole wheat couscous with sautéed onion and red pepper, and a mélange of sliced red and golden beets, Hakurei turnips, purple top turnips, radishes, and pattypan squash all sautéed in EVOO.
All in all, this is a very pleasing wine and an excellent deal! Go for it peeps!
@bahwm Thanks for the review Your meal sounds amazing and a great fit with our Onesta Grenache Blanc. Thanks!
