This wine is born from the best selection of our parcel 22, block I. It is a block wine due to the special characteristics that distinguish this terroir, with its herbal and spicy floral aromas, and the typical red fruit of Pinot Noir of a cold area. It was harvested in March and fermented in concrete, using the 50% whole cluster. Once the malolactic fermentation was done, it was aged in untoasted French oak foudres for 18 to 20 months.
Sensory Notes
Color: Ruby red with violet hues
Taste: Pinot Noir with great character, notes of raspberries and cherries combined with herbs such as oregano, thyme, truffle and flowers. Great complexity and finesse in this splendid Patagonian wine.
Palate: Delicate and persistent structure. Silky tannins, combined with a firm natural acidity, that gives a unique vitality and depth. Of medium intensity, its great characteristics are finesse and complexity.

This wine is the result of a careful selection of grapes from selected parcels of our Paico and Sierra Silva vineyards. It reflects the deepest and purest expression of the Otronia terroir, through one of the most special varieties, Pinot Noir. We aim to showcase the essence of our terroir and our landscape through the ultimate expression made into wine. The grapes were harvested on March 15 (Paico) and March 20 (Sierra Silva) and fermented in French oak vats, using the whole cluster vinification technique at 50%. Once malolactic fermentation was completed, the wine was aged in untoasted French oak foudres for 22 months.

“A wine defined by nature, at the edge of the impossible.”
In Sarmiento, Chubut on the shores of Lake Musters, Otronia is born in a new wine region - the southernmost in the world - and along with it a new terroir and a new vision. The name Otronia is derived from the indigenous/local name that ancient villagers used for Lake Musters — they called it “Otrón.”
Bodega Otronia is located in the heart of Patagonia on parallel 45’33, probably, the last southern frontier for cultivating vines. The heterogeneity of the soils, the permanent winds, the cold and dry climate, and the sunlight intensity gives a unique profile to our wines.

Hello! Luke, the winemaker from Kivelstadt here! Stoked that I am getting a chance to Rat one of these wines, I can’t say I’ve had a Patagonian Pinot before. I had the 2020 vintage and thoroughly enjoyed it this evening. Solo sipping tonight post dinner, wanted to see how this wine stood on its own.
Thoughts @ cork pop - Decently layered nose right away with bright red fruit lead blocking for fresh herbs and dried mushroom, excited to see how a couple hours being open allow the aromatics to really blossom. First strawberries of the season that are always more tart than you thought they’d be, slight tomato leaf and herbaceous edge. Lighter in color than expected in the glass and much appreciated.
2 hours after opening - Stem spice showing up on the palate in a big way. A lot of the fruit has given way to more secondary and tertiary flavors. The spice rack is open, lots of oregano and truffle like the tasting notes above mention. The herbaceous note from earlier has evolved into a sort of cool lemongrass situation on the nose. The fruit that remains has pushed to the finish, little bit of the classic cranberry and sour cherry flanked by very mellow structure.
I enjoy Pinots that lean towards the savory side of things, so this wine checks boxes for me. I also love stem in wine, both as a maker and partaker! It is such a great counterpoint to the delicate fruit of well made Pinots (among many other varieties!), as well as offering some restraint to the abv.
A tasty and distinct Pinot from the edge of the world down in Patagonia, sign me up!
I’m going to try it again tomorrow around lunchtime and share some Day 2 thoughts.

2020 made the rounds…
Wine Review Online:
92 points. There are tons of background to this wine – it claims to be the southernmost winery in the world (around the 45th parallel), and it is part of the Bulgheroni stable of premium wineries scattered around the world. The wine itself is quite good, with tangy but full-bodied cherry flavors and good intensity and structure – similar, perhaps, to the oceanside Pinot Noirs from California’s southern Central Coast. Roger Morris 9/24
Descorchados:
96 points. From 12-year-old vineyards in the Sarmiento area, very close to Lake Musters, about 1,900 kilometers south of Mendoza, Otronia’s vineyards have shown that they can offer a good opportunity to make great whites as well as great reds. The pinot noir in particular has shown rich flavors and character as the vines have taken root on those sandy soils, in this case, with deep clay. In this pinot, intriguing notes of earth and mushrooms are mixed with spicy and floral tones. The fruits appear in the background, but gain prominence in the mouth, accompanied by firm, sharp tannins that are projected until the end. It’s tense, refreshing, and full of nuances and little details of herbs, spices, and mushroom notes. A little Patagonian concert using the pinot as the principal instrument. Patricio Tapia 1/23
The Wine Front:
93 points. Behind a paywall for the most part but tasted 6/24, but notes drink 2026 - 2032, Diam Mike Bennie
Decanter World Wine Awards:
88 points. Bronze. Lovely restrained aromas of red fruits and earthy nuances. Moderate tannins, with a nice texture. 1/23
Tim Atkin, 94 points, paywall.
Suckling:
Naturally rendered nose with wild berries, racy strawberries, white pepper and herbal freshness. Really fluid and tangy with a very juicy personality on the mid-palate, before a tight finish with firm but fine tannins. Clone 777. Around 6700 bottles made. Better from 2025. 2/23
Revista Adega:
94 points. Red made from Pinot Noir grapes, 50% fermented in whole bunches, aged for 18 to 20 months in untoasted French oak foudres. Pitanga and herbs. Hay. Very clean and juicy fruit. Plum and blueberry. The deepest of the Otronia Pinot Noir tasted. Monolithic and polished tannins. Thyme. Fresh wild fruit. Gunpowder. CB 5/23
jancisrobinson dot com:
17/20. A selection of grapes from lot #1 of their Paico vineyard in Sarmiento, Chubut, but in future they will also include fruit from their Serra Silva vineyard. The grapes were harvested by mid March and fermented in French oak vats, using 50% whole clusters. Once the malolactic conversion was completed, the wine was aged in French oak cubas without toasting for 22 months. TA 6.7 g/l, pH 3.42, RS 1.8 g/l. Mid garnet. More obviously stemmy than the Rugientes Pinot and extremely pure in its fresh red fruit, a highly focused rather than a pretty Pinot. Fine-grained texture, almost linear, with immense purity. Tight, structured, assertive rather than charming. Extreme elegance. Drink 2024 - 2032 Julia Harding 9/24

Ken’s Wine Rating: Very Good+ (93)
This ruby colored Pinot Noir from Otronia opens with a fragrant strawberry and red raspberry bouquet with hints of red licorice. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied with medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is balanced, round, fresh, and fruit forward. The flavor profile is strawberry and loam blend with notes of red raspberry and craisin. I also detected hints of red plum and black tea. The finish is dry, and its flavors, acidity, and moderate dusty tannins stick around for a little while. I would pair this fruity Pinot with grilled Norwegian salmon. Enjoy – Ken 1/6/25

B+ In a world where pinot noir is trending darker and more brooding, Argentina’s Otronia says… nah. Here’s a bright and summery pinot that melds strawberry and cherry notes into a gently sweet, exuberant picnic wine. There’s a sense of terroir here that arrives in the form of a gravelly earthiness and a healthy layer of tea leaf — and bay leaf — on top. While lightly peppery on the finish, it never lets go of its boldly fruity elements — to the point where I suggest you give it some time to air out a bit to let some of the berry-driven aromatics temper themselves. Makes a great pan sauce, too. Christopher Null 12/21/24
Into Wine:
90 points. A- This is a Pinot Noir from Argentina. Pale Ruby in color, clear at the rim, clear and bright. The nose has black cherries, slight blueberries and a bit of dried herbal notes. Medium bodied. Nice texture. On the palate, cherries with a touch of sandalwood. Light tannins. Long finish. This is nice on its own but would be even better with food. A nice wine to serve with roasted duck or chicken. Drink over the next five years. Loren Sonkin 8/6/24
2021, made the rounds too…
Wine Enthusiast:
93 points. Despite the low temperature and powerful winds, abundant sunlight in Patagonia’s Sarmiento appellation allows the grapes to ripen gracefully. As a result, this elegant Pinot Noir offers a delicate bouquet of raspberry aromas and a dash of black pepper. Flavors of raspberries and cherries intertwine with subtle notes of bay leaf and clove, showcasing tension and spices on the midpalate. — Jesica Vargas 7/1/25
Suckling:
Elegant raspberries, white pepper and a touch of chalk and mineral. Complex and nuanced on the palate, showing freshness and some nice structure from the tannins. Ethereal and fresh, but also vertical. Around 40% whole clusters. Drink or hold. 2/24
Descorchados:
96 points. The purity of this new vintage of Otronia (now in its fifth vintage) is a consequence of the intense work that the winemaker, Juan Pablo Murgia, has done with the variety, trying to understand its adaptation to a place as special as Sarmiento, an area that’s cold but that at the same time has intense luminosity, far to the south in the cold steppes of the Argentine Patagonia. This is rich in fruit tones yet also full of earthy notes, firm texture, palate-biting tannins, and a finish full of flowers. This has to be one of the best pinot noirs in South America, and it’s definitely the best we’ve had from Otronia. From 12-year-old vineyards in the Sarmiento zone, very close to Lake Musters and about 1,900 kilometers south of Mendoza, it was harvested very early. Otronia’s vineyards have shown that they can offer a good opportunity to make great whites and also great reds, especially pinot noir which, as these vines have taken root on those sandy soils that, in this case, have clay at depth. Patricio Tapia 1/24
Revista Adega:
95 points. Wet earth, balsamic, grosel ha and pitanga. Herbal profile where the paico stands out. The most reactive tannins of all. In the mouth, the pitanga gains prominence with a little fresh, medicinal fig and charcoal wood in the fireplace. It deserves time in its cellar. Here the way is opened to another level in this wine that was already impressive. CB 8/23
Wine Spectator:
92 points. Fresh and sleek in feel, with a deep minerally base to the pure and juicy strawberry core. Subtle notes of floral tea leaf and baking spices join in and linger around vibrant tannins. Drink now. 1,500 cases made, 120 cases imported. Aaron Romano 11/30/24
Tim Atkin, 96 points, paywall.
Decanter World Wine Awards (2024):
94 points. Silver.
Expressive aromas of fresh berries, strawberry, forest floor and mushroom. Juicy and serious texture, firm structure and long finish.
Vinous, 93 points, paywall.
A June 2025 blurb in The Drinks Business here mentions the 2020:
The winery’s flagship ruby-red-coloured Pinot Noir 2020 is made with grapes from Block I in Paico vineyard. The 100% Pinot Noir is distinguished by its notes of raspberries and cherries, complemented by hints of dry herbs, truffle, and freshly cut flowers. The palate is delicate yet possesses a persistent structure. Silky tannins, combined with firm natural acidity, give this wine unique vitality and depth.
Geezus, not rocket science doing this, but it took a few extra beans in the grinder this morn…
@kaolis Grosel ha (gooseberry) and pitanga (suriname cherry) … Nice reviewing there. Little disappointed with “wet earth” But maybe he was building up to the exotics.
