2021 Pedroncelli Chardonnay, F. Johnson Vineyard, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County
Tasting Notes
The bouquet of our F. Johnson Vineyard Chardonnay shows tropical fruit and toasted notes with a touch of vanilla. Rich and layered flavors of Crème brulee and peach following through to balanced acidity and a touch of toasty oak. Barrel fermentation and malolactic fermentation add underlying complexity and richness. Medium bodied, the fruit flavors blend together for a bright and creamy finish. Enjoy now or within three years of release.
F. Johnson Vineyard
The Frank Johnson Vineyard was planted to Chardonnay more than 40 years ago and is a primary source for Pedroncelli. A particular block is chosen for our small lot barrel-fermented style Chardonnay. Two appellations meet in this vineyard: Russian River Valley on the south side and Dry Creek Valley to the north. Fruit comes entirely from a designated portion on the Dry Creek Valley side. Influenced by the cool climate that combines marine fog layers and the confluence of two main waterways, the resulting wine shows exceptional quality.
Winemaking
Drought influenced the growing season and with less rain it lowered production and acidity while intensifying the flavors. This block of Chardonnay was harvested on September 6. As a result of the vintage, the wine shows a high concentration of aromatics with rich varietal flavors and mild acidity.
The grapes were crushed and pressed into a temperature-controlled stainless steel tank to settle for 24 hours. The juice was inoculated with Montrachet yeast and half-way through fermentation was transferred to barrels. The wine was aged for eight months on the lees in seasoned American oak barrels. 100% of the barrels went through the secondary malo-lactic fermentation. Weekly stirring of the lees ensured the smoothing effects of aging the wine sur-lie, adding additional complexity.

Tasting Notes
Aromas of citrus and pineapple lead to juicy tropical flavors of mango, meyer lemon, and honey finishing clean and bright. A smooth-bodied Chardonnay highlighted by medium acidity, the taste lingers with tropical flavors and a light finish. Drink now—no aging required.
In the Vineyard
The Chardonnay fruit is sourced from three vineyards located at the southern end of Dry Creek Valley. They benefit from the cool microclimate and alluvial soils near the Russian River and produces Chardonnay with exceptional fruit and balance, culminating in great character. Drought influenced the growing season; with less rain, it lowered production and acidity but intensified the flavors. Chardonnay was harvested over the first two weeks of September. As a result, the wine shows a high concentration of aromatics with varietal flavors and mild acidity.
Winemaking
The winemaking goal is simple: showcase the distinctive fruit of this variety. This focus on fruit is particularly important in creating the Signature Selection Chardonnay. After the grapes were picked and pressed the juice was delivered to temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to ferment, capturing
the fresh fruit flavors of the vintage. A few months later the wine was bottled.

The year was 1927. President Calvin Coolidge captured the imagination of nobody. Babe Ruth hit home run after home run powered by little more than whiskey and sausage. And John Pedroncelli, Sr. bought a vineyard and winery in Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County. Since then, four generations of Pedroncellis have weathered Prohibition, wine booms and busts, and changing tastes. And they’re still a family-owned operation making acclaimed premium wines. Wherever you are now, Sultan of Swat and Silent Cal, this next glass is for you.

I am not a chardonnay drinker, but am a BIG fan of the Pedroncelli folks and most of their reds. Ed and company make very good wines across the board and are extremely kind and caring people. So if you care about the character of the people from whom you purchase your wine, I highly recommend these folks.
I must admit, $15 a bottle for a west coast white is a deal breaker for me, even being from Pedroncelli. Access to whites is one of the only benefits of living near the finger lakes in NY.
@CruelMelody@Drez143 I agree with both of you. I think we have become accustomed to case deals on white wines here usually priced lower, at the $8-12 range. Though some were holiday blends or other less conventional stuff (also perhaps older and no longer suited for the retail market).
In this offer I recognize we are getting what I would agree is the premium single-vineyard bottling (in half the order anyway.) This definitely sounds like it would/should be priced higher, plus it’s 2022 (or should I say everything seems 20-22% more than it used to be)… so the expectation of previous bargain case white pricing probably should not apply here.
@CruelMelody@Drez143@pmarin it’s actually 1/3 of the order that’s composed of the premium chard
I honestly feel the Ped QPR is not what it was regardless of inflation. My two cents of course
@Drez143 I must say that the prices offered on all casematea offers are incredibly consumer friendly - and well below regular retail and even wine club pricing in most cases . . .

@Drez143 Agree 100% with your post & observation. Glad others think this was a screaming deal. Most superior FLX whites for us.
